Editorial Review:

This is an important book for teachers, administrators, prospective teachers, college professors, or anyone seeking to provide quality teaching to children in their first years of schooling.
    - Harvard Educational Review

Among the many changes to sweep American literacy education has been a move toward whole class instruction. Nonetheless, children still bring to literacy a wide range of experiences and competencies. How, then, might teachers best support a literate community yet still meet the needs of individual readers? For Fountas and Pinnell, the answer lies in guided reading, which allows children to develop as individual readers within the context of a small group. Their new book is the richest, most comprehensive guided reading resource available today and the first systematic offering of instructional support for guided reading adherents.

Guided Reading was written for K-3 classroom teachers, reading resource teachers, teacher educators, preservice teachers, researchers, administrators, and staff developers. Based on the authors' nine years of research and development, it explains how to create a balanced literacy program based on guided reading and supported by read aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and other approaches. While there is an entire chapter devoted solely to the process by which children become literate, every chapter clearly presents the theoretical underpinnings of the practices it suggests. Also included are guidelines for:

  • observation and assessment
  • dynamic grouping of readers
  • creating sets of leveled books
  • selecting and introducing books
  • teaching for strategies
  • classroom management.
  • Best of all, there are well over 2,500 leveled books in the Appendixes, along with many other reproducible resources that teachers will use for years to come.

"Good first teaching is the foundation of education and the right of every child," assert the authors. With the publication of this book, educators themselves will find the foundation in reading skills instruction they so rightly deserve.

We used this as part of our weekly reading homework. Children and parents loved it. They read the text each night for three nights then got the question sheet on the fourth night for homework. The stories are interesting and engaging. The letters to parents helped guide the parents. Awesome book!

Wonderful resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This product is the perfect resource for creating a school to home connection. Each weekly lesson includes a brief letter to parents explaining the skill used in the completion of the assignment. Parent and child work together-reading and responding to the passage. It is skill-building for the student and provides parents with insight into the skills and strategies their child needs in order to become a better reader.

Excellent series of books 5 out of 5 stars.

We live abroad and so our kids' English isn't up to the level of their peers in the States. We'll be moving back to the States this coming year though and I wanted to be able to see where exactly my kids stood vis-a-vis their English skills, so I could then work on the areas they needed help in. I bought the reading and writing books in this series from grades 1-4. The books are not only an excellent tool in tracking where your child needs extra help or where his strengths lie - they are also loads of fun for the kids. With these books and some extra effort on the kids' part, I feel confident that we can get them at or near the appropriate level for their age by the time we move. No more guessing about what material to cover or whether particular texts are too easy or too difficult. These books make learning fun for the kids and they take a lot of the stress away for parents. I highly recommend the series!

great idea to involve parents and improve reading skills 5 out of 5 stars.

This has been a great resource to me as a First Grade Teacher. The book is mostly ready to copy printables. Each week, you make photocopies for the students of the two pages of homework. One page is a short story with illustrations, and the other page has questions or a quick activity, along with a note to parents. I have found these to be very helpful in building comprehension and fluency skills. I also think that it has been good for the parents of my students because they have more direction, as far as what they can do to help their child read. Each assignment focuses on a different skill (cause and effect, punctuation, sequence of events, etc.), and the parent note really helps to inform and guide parents through the homework as they help their child. I also like that the homework is due at the end of the week, so parents can pick which night is more convenient to help their child with the homework.
Overall I am very pleased with this resource.

Great Assessments 5 out of 5 stars.

I have used this and the higher level version of this book. They are great, short assesments for reading fluency. A passage with a word count is provided for the instructor, as well as a student page. I prefer to use these for instruction or practice, and use standarized versions for documentation such as Aims Web.

Grades 1 - 4. Simple and easy to use! Leveled passages with ready-to-use assessment pages help teachers quickly screen students for reading problems, such as low word recognition, poor fluency rate, and inadequate comprehension. I found this book very useful to use in the classroom. I was able to conduct the assessments fairly quickly and provide both myself and the parents with an abbreviated list of areas in which the student needed to work. Really great for the classroom teacher!

Its true; it really only takes 3-5 minutes to assess your students' reading level. It assesses the words correct per minute, the % of correct words, comprehension, fluency, pace, smoothness, and tone. Its great and highly recommended. I wish I had this years ago!

great mini assessments 4 out of 5 stars.

As a special education teacher, I have used these with my in class support students more as practice and mini assessments. They are only one page long, so they are quick and easy. They provide a teacher's page with a word count and a page for the student without a word count. I also used the lower grade levels for my pull out students. (I prefer to use a more standardized assessment such as Aims Web for documentation purposes.)

Leveled passages with ready-to-use assessment pages help teachers quickly screen students for reading problems, such as low word recognition, poor fluency rate, and inadequate comprehension. Rubrics and grade-level norms make interpreting the data simple and easy, and record-keeping forms allow teachers to document and monitor student performance all year long. Meets Reading First guidelines.

This is a very useful, and up to date text. I'm in an education program right now that focuses heavily on literacy. This text book has become my bible! This text even carries complete lists of children's books to use for teaching certain ages and subjects!
I love this book and I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come!

    Editorial Review:

With its careful balance between the theory and the practice, this book always gives readers the theories behind the methods, encouraging them to choose, adapt, and construct their own approaches as they create a balanced program of literacy instruction. Special emphasis has been given to adapting instruction for English language learners, struggling readers and writers and special needs students throughout the book. Unlike comparable texts, the new edition stresses effective steps for closing the gap between achieving and struggling readers as mandated by the No Child Left Behind legislation and Reading First. Reading Methods, Comprehension, Assessment, Emergent Literacy, Reading for student with special needs. Elementary Reading Methods.
