Editorial Review:

If you haven't seen the film version of Inherit the Wind, you might have read it in high school. And even people who have never heard of either the movie or the play probably know something about the events that inspired them: The 1925 Scopes "monkey trial," during which Darwin's theory of evolution was essentially put on trial before the nation. Inherit the Wind paints a romantic picture of John Scopes as a principled biology teacher driven to present scientific theory to his students, even in the teeth of a Tennessee state law prohibiting the teaching of anything other than creationism. The truth, it turns out, was something quite different. In his fascinating history of the Scopes trial, Summer for the Gods, Edward J. Larson makes it abundantly clear that Truth and the Purity of Science had very little to do with the Scopes case. Tennessee had passed a law prohibiting the teaching of evolution, and the American Civil Liberties Union responded by advertising statewide for a high-school teacher willing to defy the law. Communities all across Tennessee saw an opportunity to put themselves on the map by hosting such a controversial trial, but it was the town of Dayton that came up with a sacrificial victim: John Scopes, a man who knew little about evolution and wasn't even the class's regular teacher. Chosen by the city fathers, Scopes obligingly broke the law and was carted off to jail to await trial.

What happened next was a bizarre mix of theatrics and law, enacted by William Jennings Bryan for the prosecution and Clarence Darrow for the defense. Though Darrow lost the trial, he made his point--and his career--by calling Bryan, a noted Bible expert, as a witness for the defense. Summer for the Gods is a remarkable retelling of the trial and the events leading up to it, proof positive that truth is stranger than science.

Editorial Review:

Humans, especially children, are naturally curious. Yet, people often balk at the thought of learning science - the 'eyes glazed over' syndrome. Teachers may find teaching science a major challenge in an era when science ranges from the hardly imaginable quark to the distant, blazing quasar. "Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards" is the book that educators have been waiting for - a practical guide to teaching inquiry and teaching through inquiry, as recommended by the National Science Education Standards. This will be an important resource for educators who must help school boards, parents, and teachers understand 'why we can't teach the way we used to.' "Inquiry" refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and in which students grasp science knowledge and the methods by which that knowledge is produced. This book explains and illustrates how inquiry helps students learn science content, master how to do science, and understand the nature of science. This book explores the dimensions of teaching and learning science as inquiry for K-12 students across a range of science topics. Detailed examples help clarify when teachers should use the inquiry-based approach and how much structure, guidance, and coaching they should provide. The book dispels myths that may have discouraged educators from the inquiry-based approach and illuminates the subtle interplay between concepts, processes, and science as it is experienced in the classroom."Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards" shows how to bring the standards to life, with features such as classroom vignettes exploring different kinds of inquiries for elementary, middle, and high school and Frequently Asked Questions for teachers, responding to common concerns such as obtaining teaching supplies. Turning to assessment, the committee discusses why assessment is important, looks at existing schemes and formats, and addresses how to involve students in assessing their own learning achievements. In addition, this book discusses administrative assistance, communication with parents, appropriate teacher evaluation, and other avenues to promoting and supporting this new teaching paradigm.

What a great book! I've been teaching science for 19 years and don't remember a sourcebook that is as complete as this one. Old ideas and methods are revised and reviewed and new ideas are introduced and evaluated.

Editorial Review:

Solidly grounded in current recommendations of the National Science Education Standards, this text offers teaching guidance and strategies for physical, biological, and earth science courses for middle school, junior high, and high school. The authors' extensive curriculum development experience imbues the text with a practical focus. Their collective knowledge of the field balances coverage of the theory and research behind the strategies they present. Also, inherent in the text is a description of the role of constructivism in science teaching and the connection between science and society including how technological development is driven by societal needs. A seven-part organization includes an introduction, historical perspectives and contemporary trends, goals and objectives, curriculum perspectives, planning for instruction and assessment, understanding and working with students, and induction and professional development. For middle through secondary school science teachers.

Editorial Review:

Published to glowing praise in 1990, Science for All Americans defined the science-literate American--describing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes all students should retain from their learning experience--and offered a series of recommendations for reforming our system of education in science, mathematics, and technology. Benchmarks for Science Literacy takes this one step further. Created in close consultation with a cross-section of American teachers, administrators, and scientists, Benchmarks elaborates on the recommendations to provide guidelines for what all students should know and be able to do in science, mathematics, and technology by the end of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12. These grade levels offer reasonable checkpoints for student progress toward science literacy, but do not suggest a rigid formula for teaching. Benchmarks is not a proposed curriculum, nor is it a plan for one: it is a tool educators can use as they design curricula that fit their student's needs and meet the goals first outlined in Science for All Americans. Far from pressing for a single educational program, Project 2061 advocates a reform strategy that will lead to more curriculum diversity than is common today.

IBenchmarks emerged from the work of six diverse school-district teams who were asked to rethink the K-12 curriculum and outline alternative ways of achieving science literacy for all students. These teams based their work on published research and the continuing advice of prominent educators, as well as their own teaching experience. Focusing on the understanding and interconnection of key concepts rather than rote memorization of terms and isolated facts, Benchmarks advocates building a lasting understanding of science and related fields. In a culture increasingly pervaded by science, mathematics, and technology, science literacy require habits of mind that will enable citizens to understand the world around them, make some sense of new technologies as they emerge and grow, and deal sensibly with problems that involve evidence, numbers, patterns, logical arguments, and technology--as well as the relationship of these disciplines to the arts, humanities, and vocational sciences--making science literacy relevant to all students, regardless of their career paths.

If Americans are to participate in a world shaped by modern science and mathematics, a world where technological know-how will offer the keys to economic and political stability in the twenty-first century, education in these areas must become one of the nation's highest priorities. Together with Science for All Americans, Benchmarks for Science Literacy offers a bold new agenda for the future of science education in this country, one that is certain to prepare our children for life in the twenty-first century.

superb book 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book gave a comprehensive overview of the issues facing national science standards. Not only did it go over the history of standards, but it delved into the complex issues of teacher participation, community support, and school support equipment. I really enjoyed the organization of the book. it was divided into very coherent and logical arrangement, which enabled easy understanding of the complex issues even to a first-timer like me!

Editorial Review:

This volume offers a coherent vision of what it means to be scientifically literate, describing what all students regardless of background or circumstance should understand and be able to do in science as a result of their learning experience. The standards reflect the principles that learning science is an inquiry-based process, that science in schools should reflect the intellectual traditions of contemporary science, and that all Americans have a role in science reform.

A great activity book for studying environmental problems 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 35 people found this review helpful.

The book is divided into the various environmental problems which exist in the United States, and has activities revolving around each problem. The book's basic assertion is that the rise in population is the real reason for all of the environmental problems that exist today, which is, in my opinion, is correct. As a result, I generally use the section on population first to bring home that concept, and then cover the other environmental problems. It is an excellent resource for teaching environmental science or the environmental part of Biology. The book emphasizes activities which show the student what they can do about each problem, and at least makes them aware of what is happening if there is nothing that they can directly do. This book could also be used by social science teachers covering the environment since it emphasizes using discussion groups to derive some of the answers about the various problems. The book, also, is easy to use since it has recommendations in the book how the teacher can execute each activity, and has a list of expected answers to questions you may assign as homework or classwork.

Editorial Review:

This timely update of the popular Environmental Science Activities Kit includes more than 35 lessons for middle and high school science teachers on the most compelling and relevant environmental topics, such as global warming, food and water production, alternative energy sources, endangered species, land-use issues, and many more.

Excellent reproducible items 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this to be a very useful tool for teaching Biology. There are many puzzles and activities covering different Biology units, including genetics, physiology, and cell biology. Students enjoy the variety and the puzzles go along with most typical high school Biology textbooks.

Book is half usefull 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I think this book is a great resource to make copies and transparencies of sponge activities or bell works but the rest of the book I did not find useful. It included some of the same things you are already introduced to as a new teacher in an induction program. But if you're looking for a good amount of sponge activities than this is a pretty good book.

This book was horrible, even for first year teachers 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I will be a first year Bio teacher this fall and so I went ahead and bought this book. In addition to the poor layout, the first 160 pages were useless. The only good thing about it was the sponge activities in the back of the book but even then I would probably only use them when we have a sub or as a "fun activity" to fill time. Going back to the layout, the author would put page after page of forms or examples in the MIDDLE of explaining what was going on. For example, you would start to read about a technique, or whatever, and then its 5 pages of example forms some related to what you just read, others related to something else, and then it would go back to discussing the technique.

Everything else in the book was common sense and taught in my graduate teaching courses (and my grad classes taught it much better).

I wouldn't suggest this book to anyone.

Editorial Review:

This unique resource is packed with novel and innovative ideas and activities you can put to use immediately to enliven and enrich your teaching of biology, streamline your classroom management, and free up your time to accomplish the many other tasks teachers constantly face.
