Editorial Review:

Teens love it. Parents hate it. Librarians are confused by it; and patrons are demanding it. Libraries have begun purchasing both manga and anime, particularly for their teen collections. But the sheer number of titles available can be overwhelming, not to mention the diversity and quirky cultural conventions. In order to build a collection, it is important to understand the media and its cultural nuances. Many librarians have been left adrift, struggling to understand this unique medium while trying to meet patron demands as well as protests. This book gives the novice background information necessary to feel confident in selecting, working with, and advocating for manga and anime collections; and it offers more experienced librarians some fresh insights and ideas for programming and collections. In 2003 the manga (Japanese comics) market was the fastest growing area of pop culture, with 75-100% growth to an estimated market size of $100 million retail. The growth has continued with a 40-50% sales increase in bookstores in recent years. Teens especially love this highly visual, emotionally charged and action-packed media imported from Japan, and its sister media, anime (Japanese animation); and libraries have begun purchasing both. Chock full of checklists and sidebars highlighting key points, this book includes: a brief history of anime and manga in Japan and in the West; a guide to visual styles and cues; a discussion of common themes and genres unique to manga and anime; their intended audiences; cultural differences in format and content; multicultural trends that manga and anime readers embrace and represent; and programming and event ideas. It also includes genre breakdowns and annotated lists of recommended titles, with a focus on the best titles in print and readily available, particularly those appropriate to preteen and teen readers. Classic and benchmark titles are also mentioned as appropriate. A glossary and a list of "frequently asked questions" complete the volume.

Editorial Review:

This new entry in the Crash Course Series explaining collection development was created for those with little formal LIS training working in small, rural libraries. The guide will also be useful for librarians who are new to this area of service or need to brush up on their skills. In a volume covering everything from community analysis through developing collection policies, librarians will learn how to use reviews to acquire materials as well as to help weed the collection, how to market the collection to patrons, and how to handle censorship issues when collections are challenged.

Throw out those books that nobody uses! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Most books with titles like this are vaporware - promising a lot but delivering nothing. This one is real and should be read by everyone responsible for managing a library. I've read/skimmed it once and have begun a project to determine how often books on the Reference shelf are used. Spend the $55!

Editorial Review:

Based on the author's ongoing research, field observations, and interviews with library professionals, this edition thoroughly updates the previous one and simplifies the process of weeding. Slote shows librarians how to identify the core collections versus the weedable items. After reviewing current weeding practices and standards, he discusses a variety of traditional and computer-assisted methods for weeding. His approach is based on the new understanding of the relationship between in-library use and circulation use. A section dealing with reference (noncirculating) collections has been added, and the chapter on computer-assisted weeding has been completely rewritten to help librarians streamline the weeding process. All forms have been redesigned.

Editorial Review:

A leader in cooperative collection development for the school library presents a framework for developing school library collections in today's era of "access vs. ownership" and cooperative resource sharing. This guide provides new tools and techniques for analyzing collections, including "ready-to-use" collection data-gathering forms and collection assessment and analysis worksheets. Also included are examples of a written collection development policy, a selection policy, a copyright policy and procedures, and an Internet use policy. It shows how to map the school curriculum, represent library collections using automated circulation data, and document priorities for the collection. The guide is based on the premise that school library media specialists must have a clear understanding of their collection strengths and needs before participating in cooperative collection development in order to "think globally but act locally." The author provides more than 30 collection assessment tools, worksheets, and exemplary written sample collection policies that have proven effective in school library media centers and can be adapted for use in grades K through 12. Kachel provides both qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze existing collections based on the conspectus approach. Cooperative collection development activities are detailed, including the financial, technical, and human resources needed for success. Methodologies for providing a rich base of resources matching curricular and student needs in a cost-effective and user-relevant fashion enhance the managerial and leadership role of the school library media specialist. For all school library media specialists who plan to analyze and assess their collection and participate in cooperative collection development, this guide provides all the tools necessary to accurately and successfully manage this activity in a cost-effective manner.

An excellent introduction for teachers and librarians.. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

to the world of graphic novels. Gorman delivers exactly the kind of info that busy teachers and librarians need: lots of annotated lists (including ten "safe" graphic novels), some context, and issue related to selecting, maintaining, and promoting a graphic novel collection. There's a great gloosary of terms (only lack a pronounication guide for terms related to Japanese animation), a guide to resources, and even a nice guide to publishers and distributers. On top of all this are some illustrations / covers from graphic novels, plus an illustration of the author drawn as a Librarian Superhero. Gorman does a superhero task of advocating and explaining the need for graphic novels in school and public libraries.

Editorial Review:

Library media specialists can jumpstart reading enthusiasm for their young adult audience with this new resource and the emerging effectiveness of using graphic novels to promote literacy. This resource includes an overview of the history of comic books and graphic novels, a "plain english" glossary to help readers decipher terms used in graphic novel publishing, as well as a list of recommended graphic novel titles.

This one-of-a-kind book specifically addresses collection development of graphic novels in library media centers, and serves as an introductory guide to the graphic novel format for school as well as public librarians.

Editorial Review:

In the last half of the 20th century, the information world has been transformed from static to fluid with an ever-expanding array of electronic resources requiring new and different means of collecting, organizing and disseminating information. This collection development guide encompasses the total range of electronic resources libraries are using today, including: regional library catalogues; bibliographic services; electronic journals (and ancillary products such as linkage services), large text and image services (like Proquest and Carl UnCover), and subject-specific resources. It begins with a look at the landscape of electronic resources and examines their life-cycle from an acquiring library's perspective. It considers what is available, how to make selection decisions and acquire resources, and how to deliver those resources and assess usage. Special sections are devoted to: collection development for electronic journals and e-books; making resources available both inside and outside the library (including authentication issues and methodologies); evaluating use (including different kinds of usage statistics); and budgeting and planning.

Local History Collections in Libraries 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Citing the developments in technology, changes in the description and arrangement of materials, and the advancements in preservation, the author offers this comprehensive manual on local history collections. Well written and organized, the book covers collection development, access, preservation, new technologies, users, publicity, and administration. The questions raised in each section also provide a basis for more reflection on the topic. Sample forms are represented throughout the book and there is an extensive bibliography at the end. Recommended for any library with a local history collection.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive manual of operations for managing local history material within the administrative framework of a library covers issues of administration, acquisitions, access, and use of all formats of material. Information on continually changing areas such as preservation, copyright and other legal concerns, computer applications, and national databases is also addressed, along with public relations roles and outreach activities for local history collections. Guidelines for administration of nontraditional library material (e.g., manuscripts) will be especially helpful to librarians. Archivists will value the manual as one of continuing practical education and theoretical development as exemplified by the Society of American Archivists' Basic Manual Series and Archival Fundamental Series. Manuscript curators, students, and administrators will also benefit from this book.
