Picture of what you 're doing really matters. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been using this book for almost two semester because this is one of our primary reference in our cataloging subject. Our subject includes Descriptive Cataloging and Non-book materials cataloging.

Everytime we are asked to do some cataloging, I always prefer to have read first this book before doing some cataloging exercises because this gives me clear picture of what really am I going to do. The examples are there, and the corresponding catalog entry are there sited clearly.

I can't forget when we were given a problem to catalog the compact disc that we brought in our class, I don't know what to do with that CD, and then I went to our library that time, and borrowed this book, and there I found clear explanation of what was to be done first in cataloging that type of non-book material. When I've seen the example, I just compared it with our compact disc(music CD), and I gathered every little bit of information that are needed in my catalog entry. And at last, I've done my work.

The book gives layman explanation, you can't find here straight rules, there's an explanation for every technical terms that the author used. The book covers not oonly descriptive cataloging, but also, non-book materials cataloging. The book is very down to earth, you will find yourself just as reading simple mathematics. When I read the book everytime we have an exerice I just always find myself looking for the significant information in the chief sources of information and just plugged it in my catalog entry and I'm finished as easy as that.

This book in short doesn't just set the rules in cataloging, it gives understanding how every rules in cataloging are being used. Now I'm on my third year of my Library and Information Science degree, and still I'm using this book as my primary reference because this book really gives me picture of what I am doing.

Editorial Review:

All chapters have been rewritten in this latest edition to incorporate recent developments, particularly the tremendous impact metadata and the Web have had on cataloging and classification.

Editorial Review:

What is FRBR, and why is everyone talking about it? Is it really going to revolutionize cataloguing? And if so, what form will it take? This book is written for librarians, bibliographic systems designers, library and information science faculty and students, and anyone else who is interested in learning about the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and how following the FRBR model can improve access to information through helpful organization of the metadata records that are surrogates for information resources. Serials, art, music, moving images, maps, and archival materials are just a few of the formats covered. Not for catalogers only!

haven't read it yet, no matter how good it is or not good, it is a ripoff. 1 out of 5 stars.

The price of this book is outrageous. The publisher, author, or whoever is responsible should be ashamed. This is a tiny thin book of less than 200 pages with lots of illustrations (not even color) and its paperback. I know textbooks are expensive but this has got to be one of the worse deals I have ever seen.

Editorial Review:

Cataloguing has always been important but hardly any library schools teach it, leaving many students and information professionals to learn on their own. This book covers descriptive cataloguing and is designed as a simple companion to "AACR2". The author believes that most items can be dealt with by using comparatively few of the rules, and that many of the more abtruse ones can be ignored until you need them. This book therefore concentrates on the basics. It has a clear, informal approach, with less important aspects set in smaller type, and is fully cross-referenced to "AACR2", taking into account the 2002 revisions. Concentrating on the materials most Anglo-American libraries are most likely to meet, it includes MARC21 coding and examples, and is designed for library school students, beginning cataloguers and information professionals who need to revise cataloguing skills.

Editorial Review:

With a clear and practical approach, Intner and Weihs empower neophyte and student catalogers and classifiers to apply the rules and tools of library organization to produce standard catalog records suitable for network databases or local OPACs. The book describes and explains management decisions, pros and cons of cataloging alternatives, and how to run a catalog department. Through hundreds of examples, the authors illustrate cataloging problems and their solutions, remaining true to the standards without putting the work beyond the reach of any thoughtful reader. In this new edition you'll find more in-depth coverage of books, nonprint materials, Internet resources, and serials, as well as the most up-to-date versions of such basic tools as the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Sears List of Subject Headings, and Dewey Decimal Classification. The authors clarify the jargon of bibliographic control, cataloging networks, and MARC coding. More than a how-to gui

Editorial Review:

Society's love affair with information has led to a proliferation of media that shows no sign of abating. Not surprisingly, such materials constitute an increasingly vital part of any library's collection, and a particular and ongoing challenge to its catalogers. For over two decades, Cataloging of Audiovisual Materials and Other Special Materials has served as the place to go for catalogers of nonprint materials around the world. Individual chapters deal with cartographic materials, sound recordings, videorecordings, graphic materials, 3-dimensional artifacts & realia, and kits; all of which are substantially updated; while two additional sections, Electronic Resources, and Serials, have been completely rewritten. Each chapter begins with a discussion of the general problems a particular media presents, followed by a statement of applicable AACR2 rules and an overview of existing Library of Congress rule interpretations. Facsimiles of source material, with appropriate coding/tagging, subject headings, and call numbers appear throughout.

This version of the Dewey Decimal Classification fits on your desk and in your budget. Abridged Edition 13 offers the up-to-date features of DDC 21 at a price small libraries can afford. Here's what you get in a single volume: * Major revisions of 350-354 public administration, 370 Education, 570 Life Sciences, 580 Plants, and 590 Animals * New table numbers for countries of the former Soviet Union * Updated terminology and new topics including virtual reality, Internet, rap music and in-line skating * Over 40 pages of additional index terms * Numbering compatible with DDC 21, so libraries can expand easily from the abridged to the full edition.

Hilarious and ridiculous 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 35 people found this review helpful.

...to even think of blaming libraries. Maybe if high powered political figures on library boards across America didn't feel the need to make their served institutions "All Things to All People" and got back to core values, and if the American public could turn off American Idol and reality TV long enough to end the Reign of the Retard, there would be the support for libraries needed to house all the items ever published anywhere, and every Podunktown can have it's own Library of Congress. Guess you've truly made it when you've sold enough books you can bite a hand that feeds you, Mr. Baker.

However that does not detract from the quality of his writing, stellar as usual.

Editorial Review:

Since the 1950s, our country’s greatest libraries have, as a matter of common practice, dismantled their collections of original bound newspapers and so-called brittle books, replacing them with microfilmed copies. The marketing of the brittle-paper crisis and the real motives behind it are the subject of this passionately argued book, in which Nicholson Barker pleads the case for saving our recorded heritage in its original form while telling the story of how and why our greatest research libraries betrayed the public trust by auctioning off or pulping irreplaceable collections. The players include the Library of Congress, the CIA, NASA, microfilm lobbyists, newspaper dealers, and a colorful array of librarians and digital futurists, as well as Baker himself — who eventually discovers that the only way to save one important newspaper is to buy it. Double Fold is an intense, brilliantly worded narrative that is sure to provoke discussion and controversy.

Editorial Review:

This book is a companion to the 19th edition of the Sears List and a complete course in the theory and practice of the List for practitioners, teachers, and learners. The object of this small, practical introduction is to be simple, clear, and illustrative, assuming the reader has little prior knowledge either of the Sears List or of subject headings work in general.
