This book provides a concise look at what directories are and how they differ from most other business applications and databases. It also provides a review of directory standards and where they come from.We are then given some how-to tips on directory planning and the technologies it will take to implement them as well as security and other network issues. Most helpful are the portions of the book on how applications are enabled with directories and very nice piece on meta-directories.
This book is not only helpful for the technical folks, it is a good overview of the issues around networks for management to get their arms around this very important topic.
Thanks to the Kampmans for this very helpful book!
Editorial Review:
Currently, the average company has access to hundreds of network directories covering a vast range of subjects such as printers, databases, e-mail, and groupware, all in differing formats. It has become a confusing mess for network managers trying to plan and manage information finding in a cost-effective way. Recent research estimates that 80% of the costs of managing directories is due to duplicated efforts. With a clear focus on sorting out the directory landscape and then guiding the reader to matching and migrating the different types of directories for a specific network, this work focuses on three major themes, each comprising a separate section: an overview of directories and their importance to enterprise networks; current and forthcoming uses of directories; and strategies for designing, migrating, and maintaining directories.
