Editorial Review:

As the World Wide Web has emerged as a major research tool across all fields of study, the concept of metadata has become a crucial topic. Metadata, which can be broadly defined as "data about data," refers to the searchable definitions used to locate information. This issue is particularly relevant to searches on the Web, where metatags may determine the ease with which a particular Web site is located by searchers. This book defines this little-understood concept, explains its importance and potential uses in the networked environment, and describes existing metadata standards in the field of cultural heritage information.

Editorial Review:

Elementary educators can implement information literacy instruction across the curriculum and throughout the school with this invaluable guide. Beginning with a definition and description of information literacy and its components, the book details the roles and responsibilities of the literacy endeavor and it provides an in-service presentation for staff development. In addition, several state and organization information literacy standards are reviewed and interpreted, including the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning, developed by AASL and AECT (1998). Thompson and Henley show the relationship between information literacy standards and national subject area curriculum standards. Scenarios that illustrate applications of the standards and strategies for incorporating standards and objectives into instructional units are given along with specific examples of integrated units of instruction. An annotated bibliography of WWW information literacy resources is provided as "hot links" on

A revelation 5 out of 5 stars.

I've used Yahoo for years, but I never knew what I was missing until I took a chance on this book. It's definitely worth buying! The book treats Yahoo like more than just a Web site....like an online service. I'm using Yahoo even more than I did before, and getting more out of my online time. I never knew about Yahoo Companion or how to talk with somebody for free, anywhere in the world....I've got my family across the country using it now, and saving money off the phone bill. Very useful book....lots of humor....really opened my eyes to Yahoo.

already too late 1 out of 5 stars.

Although this book was published in September of 1999, by now (November of 1999), many sections of it are already obsolete. Keeping up with a great service like Yahoo! can only be done online.

Editorial Review:

This guide should help Internet beginners and experienced searchers navigate this Web site and explore its various features. For example, its author, Brad Hill, gives advice to readers who want to buy a car, find a movie time, build a personal calendar or create a Web site.

Editorial Review:

How good is your library's Website? Unless you're the librarian who set them up, online library services can be hard to navigate. In fact, many users give up in frustration without ever finding what they're looking for. Nowadays, many of the search and retrieval services that previously were database-driven are now Web-based and part of the library's official Website. So as libraries increasingly use the Web to deliver both in-house and remote services online, it is critical that their sites are engaging, easy to navigate, and created with the end user - the library customer - in mind. This soup to nuts guide will help beginners and experts alike to determine, in a systematic way, how well their Websites are performing for their customers. Applying the best practices of usability testing, you will learn how to gauge: How easy it is for new users to learn how to navigate and use the site; How easy it is for trained users to interact with it; How effective the site is in pointing users to the information they're looking for; Whether or not users are motivated to use the technology The expert author team walks you through not only the process of performing usability testing, but also creating allies among decision-makers to support testing, revisions inspired by collected data, and cost management. For all types of libraries, this step-by-step manual is a sure-fire tool for creating a winning Website for savvy library customers.

Editorial Review:

In just a few years a generation has grown up believing that everything can be found on the Web, and indeed there are now more than 2 billion documents in cyberspace, not including the 550 billion documents that can be accessed via the 'deep' or 'invisible' Web.

But how do you separate quality, authoritative information from all the dross? It seems that the difficulties of finding valid information on the web are growing as fast as the Internet itself. New search tools appear every few weeks and the familiar ones are constantly evolving. Effective searching in this ever-expanding environment requires new strategies.

The Hidden Web assumes that for most readers the Internet is no longer a mystery, and that the finding of quality information has become a major concern. Worthwhile information can often remain hidden to Web users, even very experienced ones, and it is the role of this book to provide strategies for uncovering valuable information, whether it is an html document, a paper buried deep within a public website, or a full-text document in some publicly accessible database.

Productive searching for web-based information requires not only good search skills but also a broad knowledge of trusted sites. The Hidden Web is a vital resource for anyone who wants to access the Web successfully.
