Editorial Review:

One natural outcome of the educational reform movement of the 1840s was the growth of the American public library. Though the first public libraries were housed in post offices and town halls, even in local drug stores, growing book collections soon forced cities and towns to recognize the need for larger, more appropriate buildings. Some 450 public libraries were built in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The most important and influential architect of the era who built librairies was Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), perhaps best known for his design of Boston's Trinity Church. The primary focus of Kenneth Breisch's Henry Hobson Richardson and the Small Public Library in America is on Richardson's designs for public libraries in Woburn, North Easton, Quincy, and Malden, Massachusetts, as well as an unbuilt proposal for the Hoyt Library in East Saginaw, Michigan. In addition to placing them within the broader history of American library design, Breisch offers a close examination of these buildings as participants in the cultural, political, and economic developments of the period. Since more than 80 percent of the public libraries built in the latter half of the nineteenth century were privately endowed--as were all of Richardson's library commissions--his discussion of the role of philanthropy, in particular, illuminates the perceived meaning and function of public libraries to the monied classes, as well as their function as memorials to deceased family members. Breisch also examines the role played by the library profession in the development of modern library planning theory during this period, a role that often clashed with the goals of the architects commissioned to design the library buildings. Although this conflict eventually led the American Library Association to condemn Richardson's buildings as unsuitable for library work, his designs still had enormous influence on the architectural vocabulary of the institution. The fact remains that Richardson invented and refined a significant prototype for the smaller American public library building.

Editorial Review:

In 1950 Ruth W. Brown, librarian at the Bartlesville Public Library, was dismissed from her job after thirty years of exemplary service, ostensibly because she had circulated subversive materials. In truth, however, Brown was fired because she was active in a group affiliated with the Congress of Racial Equality.

This episode in a small Oklahoma town almost a half-century ago is more than a disturbing local event. It exemplifies the strange period of the Cold War known as the McCarthy era, foregrounding those who labored for racial justice, sometimes at great cost, before the civil rights movement.

The fundamental issues of the Brown case make it especially pertinent today, when differences--in race, gender, class, and national origin--are again feared, and as challenges to materials in library collections again escalate. Ruth Brown's story helps us understand the matrix of personal, community, state, and national forces that can lead to censorship, intolerance, and the suppression of individual rights.

Editorial Review:

Public libraries that take a proactive approach to homework help - by setting up organized, public library homework centres - have the potential to become catalysts for better performance in school, improved self esteem, and engaged, co-operative learning. In this volume, Cindy Mediavilla describes what constitutes an effective homework centre - a separate space in the library, with set hours, clearly defined services, and an assigned staff member. Computers are helpful, but not essential, according to Mediavilla. What is key is that a person is present and responsible to oversee the programme. With real-life examples from actual homework centres, this manual offers the tools to set up a successful homework centre, including: sample surveys, goals and objectives, publicity and recruitment flyers, homework helper application forms and contracts, staff and volunteer job descriptions, grant applications, and focus group questions; examples of creating funding by programmes around the country; and practical advice on how to collaborate with schools and educators to co-ordinate goals.

Will Manley is the Dave Barry of the library world. His essays and other books are exceedingly funny and poingant. I salute any and all public librarians like Mr. Manley...truly the salt of the earth, our Republic is blessed by men & women like this.

Editorial Review:

"After a decade of computerization...our image still has not changed. More importantly, our services have not changed significantly. Books are still our business.... Boolean searching is not the meaning of life. It can, however, help us to find the books we need to make our lives meaningful." So ends this most unusual work of library science. Pressed for time? Not to worry-this book has no beginning, middle or end. It's not meant to be read that way. It should be taken immediately to the staff lounge and left on top of the microwave-just the place to leave it to ensure that it is read.

Every librarian (and patron!) needs to read this 5 out of 5 stars.

Manley really knows how to find the humor in an occupation that the world has long thought to be pretty mirthless. His compilation of essays are well-written, witty, insightful, and even self-effacing. Although there are a few instances where Manley's observations are dated (i.e., thinking libraries won't ever have drive-thru windows), he is usually on target with his barbs aimed at libraries, their staff, and the public who use them. Few non-fiction books have ever caused me to laugh out loud, and this book definitely did!

Editorial Review:

This unconventional, uncensored look at the world of unprivate libraries by the unabashed, unreluctant and certainly unconventional columnist for the Wilson Library Bulletin, presents uninhibited views that subvert the undeserved reputation of librarians as unsmiling, unresponsive bureaucrats. Sage advice in a light tone-and you will not be unamused by Gary Handman's uncanny illustrations. This is the second in the "UN" series for Tempe, Arizona's Will Manley.

Editorial Review:

Libraries are integral parts of communities, and patrons have visited them in record numbers over recent years. According to the American Library Association, 64 percent of people surveyed in the United States have visited their local libraries in the past year. Branch librarians especially are striving to meet the various needs of their communities—in addition to books and Internet access, many branch libraries have videos, books on tape and CD, DVDs, and even art prints available to their patrons.

This handbook covers a wide variety of issues that the branch librarian must deal with every day. Chapters are devoted to mission statements (the Dallas Public Library and Dayton Metro Library mission statements are highlighted as examples), library systems, boards of trustees, friends of libraries, administration, bosses, professionalism, professional organizations, time management, effective supervision, staffs, security guards, computer databases, courier services, branch management, collection development, service desks, homeschoolers, Spanish-speaking patrons, homeless patrons, problem patrons, community, programming, and outreach.
