A Useful Book for Hands-On Librarians 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.
Marcia Trotta, a librarian working at a public library in Meriden, CT, shares various children's and YA's outreach programs that worked for her.If you are a public librarian trying to do outreach, you will find many useable ideas: DOC - a program for leaving books in doctors' waiting rooms, hospital packets for new parents, storyhour at the mall. There are several examples of forms for planning, budgeting, funds, promotional flyers, surveys.
The Resource Directory has a list of books -- good books -- but nothing new or exciting. The list of resources for finding partners could be useful.
The book is not written like a college textbook loaded with theory, but is easily read, practical, and interesting. Other books in the How-To-Do-It Manuals for librarians series are well worth checking out.
Editorial Review:
This unique resource defines and clarifies the need for outreach services for children and youth, and then tackles the practical matter of implementing successful programs. The author begins with needs assessment and targeting patrons, then covers partnership building, training library and volunteer personnel, and promotion. Model offsite programs are provided with all the information needed to get started, as well as an appendix of appropriate materials.
