This book is a must-have for anyone interested in becoming a library media specialist. It is an excellent source of information and practically required by the ALA, since that is who co-wrote it. It is also absolutely necessary if you're taking the Library Media Specialist Praxis test. A lot of the questions come from this book.

Editorial Review:

This volume aims to help readers respond proactively and help to lead the way to collaborative learning in schools. The American Library Association has been instrumental in shaping and publishing guidelines for school libraries for 75 years. This book incorporates the standards that should help students become skillful producers and consumers of information along with guidelines and principles to help create a dynamic, student-centred programme. The book's underlying concepts feature: helping students flourish in a learning community not limited by time, place, age, occupation or disciplinary borders; designing authentic learning tasks and assessments; speaking in terms educators understand; defining your role in student learning; and joining teachers and others to identify links in student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes and a variety of print and nonprint resources.

That's what this book does. It helps very much.
It has forms, charts, letters, and patterns to
help you. Topics such as physical organization
of the library, how to build
support for your programs, discipline,
storytimes, and booktalks are just a
few of the many subjects covered in this book.

It goes beyond what you learn in school and it is
all in this one handy volume.

This book, which I discovered in a catalog from World Almanac, I believe, was a very useful asset in my two years of learning experience as an emerging librarian. I found information which was verified in my graduate school coursework to gain my Masters' Degree in Library Science. Later, I found many recommendations and commendations for this volume. I will continue to return to this book for resources and ideas and good basic aids to the librarian in an elementary school. Additionally, their are great ideas that can translate to middle school and high school librarians and their many, multi-tasking roles!

Editorial Review:

This resource is packed wtih tested tips, techniques, and tools for performing every aspect of the K-8 librarian's job. New technology, operating during a budget crunch, maintaining discipline, and building support for the library program are all topics that are included.

libary fun 3 out of 5 stars.

Many of the games in the book require lengthy preparation time, however once completed, they can become part of the routine learning process. I have other library games books and I found this one to be better, covering all grades in a K-6 situation, equally and with design for organized skill learning.

Editorial Review:

Teach children how to use the library with this fun, delightful collection of simple games. Activities cover Dewey Decimal Classification®, card catalogs, dictionaries, encyclopedias and more! Use common classroom materials and supplies to create all games. Includes reproducibles. For use with grades K-6.

Editorial Review:

Over two-thirds of all challenges to books and other resources reported to the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom occur in schools. This book explores intellectual freedom issues in school library media programs including selection of resources and materials selection policies, challenges and censorship, students' freedom to read, patron privacy and confidentiality of library records, the blocking of Internet resources, access to the school library media center, its resources, and services for students with special needs, and advocacy for minors' First Amendment rights in school library media programs. Throughout the text, practicing public school and private school library media specialists at different grade levels candidly share their stories and observations on how intellectual freedom principles and ALA policy statements apply to real life situations. Attorney Mary Minow provides vital information about the impact of the First Amendment, federal and state law, and court decisions on minors using libraries in schools. Whether a library media specialist in the field or a student in a graduate or undergraduate library and information studies program, readers will find both practical information and advice to complement the concepts found in the American Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Manual. Print and Web resources are included.
