Editorial Review:

Whether painted by artist-warriors depicting their feats in battle or by other Native American artists, 19th and 20th century ledger drawings--drawn on blank sheets of ledger books obtained from U.S. soldiers, traders, missionaries, and reservation employees--provide an excellent visual source of information on the Great Plains Native Americans. An art form representing a transition from drawing on buffalo hide to a paper medium, ledger drawings range in style, content, and quality from primitive and artistically poor to bold and sharp with lavish use of color. Although interest in ledger drawings has increased in the last 20 years, there has never been a guide to holdings of these drawings. By bringing together the diverse and scattered institutions that hold them, this book will make finding the drawings quicker and easier.

Editorial Review:

Sound and video tape archives are becoming increasingly important world-wide. As the commercial and non-commercial production of sound recordings increases, the need for preservation is being recognized in libraries, museums, radio and TV stations and university departments. The growth of interest in oral history and community records adds impetus to this need. This book sets out to explore and explain all the steps involved in setting up and managing a sound archive - acquiring the material, the necessary documentation, storage, and equipment and the need for a conservation programme. It is intended both for those without any formal archive training, but knowledge of sound recordings and those who are knowledgeable about archives, but have little experience of sound recordings.

Editorial Review:

This volume catalogues the 860 items which comprise the Shaw-Hellier music collection now housed in the Music Library of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham. A foreword by Percy Young outlines the musical activities of the Worcestershire landowner, Samuel Hellier who began the collection in the middle of the 18th century. The collection includes sonatas by Corelli and Geminiani, and dances by Arnes and Bach, as well as less commonly found works such as the Chinzer symphonies and the complete published works of William Felton. As Ian Ledsham explains in this introduction, the collection was added to by Colonel Thomas Brandon Shaw-Hellier in the 19th century. He acquired some notable examples of military music, including the unique copy of "The Young Drummer's Assistant", an early treatise on military drumming. The catalogue entries include information on the content of the item, notes on watermarks and paper type, binding, ownership marks, instrumentation, portraits and subscribers lists. Items are also cross-referenced to the British Library Catalogue of Printed Music and the relevant volumes of RISM. A musical incipit is provided for all items that have not been identified or which seem to be unique.

Editorial Review:

Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a library collection is an essential component in the collection management process. "Collection Assessment in Music Libraries" is a compilation of papers that present an overview of current approaches to and concerns about collection assessment for music libraries. This report should be part of the working collection available to all music librarians and collection management officers. Edited and introduced by Jane Gottlieb, the book contains articles by Peggy Daub ("The RLG Conspectus: Its History and Applications"), Elizabeth Davis ("Guidelines of Evaluating Music Collections as Part of a Regional Assessment Plan"), Sherry Vellucci ("Technology for Collection Evaluation: Amigos and Other Tools"), and Lenore Coral ("Evaluating the Conspectus Approach: Problems and Alternatives"). An extensive bibliography is included. Understanding and utilization of the methodologies available to evaluate music collections will better insure that libraries fulfill their mission of meeting users' needs.
