No Disney, No McDonald's ? Please! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Cannella does an apt job of dispelling myths of Disney, McDonald's and the influence or "American culture" in education. If you love big corporations, coporate greed, and monopolies this is not the read for you. This book reads like a documentary movie. So.. if you enjoy documentaries like SuperSize Me, Bowling for Columbine, I'm sure you'll find yourself enjoying and frustrated at the same time by what Cannell writes.

If you don't much like documentaries this book still has something for everyone. Cannella's writings provide a perspective on what "American culture" is, how it came to be and how we endoctrinate it into our schools- worldwide.

Let's Go Sociology is a guide to internet sites of interest to sociologists and sociology students. It is, in fact, a great starting place for anyone just beginning to browse the web. Whether locating census data or finding out about careers in sociology, this book can guide anyone through the maze that is the internet. Let's hope the authors write more Let's Go books for other topics of interest to web wanderers. Even the price is great

Editorial Review:

This book contains a general introduction to the Internet followed by an extensive list of web site addresses and descriptions, indexed by topic. It can also be used as a companion to SOCIOLOGY.NET by Joan Ferrante. It expands on the Internet Home Library found in that book and includes a URL directory with the college sociology student in mind. It is a resource guide—an Internet yellow pages—with URLs that enable its users to do the background research needed to complete most assignments from their homes and dorm rooms. This second edition contains all updated URLs and is alphabetically organized for easy navigation.

Editorial Review:

This authoritative work is a critical commentary on the all-inclusive notion of the quality of life. The author examines the methods used by the two perspectives of quality of life research: social indicators research which considers the elites' valuation of what the people need, and conventional quality of life research which studies what people want, in order to improve their quality of life. These two approaches are normally considered separately. Mukherjee outlines a programme for future research and formulates a new methodology which synchronizes these two perspectives and removes the constraints facing quality of life research. The suggested methodology is illustrated by two field surveys.

Editorial Review:

The image of the scientist as a 'lone wolf' has become obsolete. It has been replaced by one which emphasizes cooperation within research groups. In this study the development of eight research groups in Dutch sociology between 1945 and 1990 is described. A discussion of a theoretical model focusing on mechanisms relevant to the development and institutionalization of groups is followed by an analysis of theory groups like 'Modern Sociology' and 'Figurational Sociology' as well as specialty groups such as the 'Leiden School of Stratification and Mobility.' Attention is paid to the state of the art of the discipline, the impact of government policy and the labor market situation for Dutch sociologists.
