Editorial Review:

Our book is a useful "how to" book for researchers and government offices wanting to start or improve their own QOL survey, and contains "best practices" from all over the world. We discuss cutting-edge surveys that are being adopted by all countries in the European community as a standardized measure of each country's progress. We also discuss how developing countries can begin the measurement of Quality of Life in ways that will increase political credibility and require smaller budgets. Other chapters describe policy applications of the Quality of Life surveys, including nations' health goals, smoking cessation, child welfare, and poverty reduction.

The authors of these chapters are the world's top experts on assessing Quality of Life. For example, the author of the first chapter is Sten Johansson, former Director of Statistics Sweden, responsible for creating the first comprehensive QOL assessment systems in the world, beginning in the 1960's. The author of the second chapter is Professor Ruut Veenhoven, known as the premier researcher on national happiness, having developed the largest database in the world on the subjective measures of well-being. Heinz-Herbert Noll is responsible for developing the unified Quality of Life measurement system for the new European Union, where up to 25 countries will be assessed using the same methodology and questionnaires. This volume is a valuable resource for four groups of readers. To researchers interested in best practices for well-established surveys of living conditions, the papers by Boelhouwer, Noll, Vogel, and Berger-Schmitt will be of special interest. To researchers and policy analysts interested in establishing a living-conditions report in their country, the papers by Kamen, Moller and Dickow, Estes, Andersen and Poppel, May, Stevens and Stols and Aasland and Tyldum give invaluable information about developing credibility, consensus-building, and survey design. For researchers interested in cross-national comparison, the papers by Hudler and Richter, and Delhey, Bohnke, Habich, and Zapf describe the rich resources already available, as well as problems of different wording, interpretation, etc. Finally, for citizens wishing to effect changes in public policy, and for researchers studying that process, the papers by Ferris, Estes, Hagerty, and Behrendt outline how organizations should select goals, utilize social indicators, and develop programs that improve the Quality of Life in their nations.

Editorial Review:

The issue of whether the case study (or psychobiographical) method can be a relevant research tool in the social sciences has been the source of debate for years. A Case for Case Studies explores the effectiveness of this research method in hypothesis formation and theory building via a demonstration, the journal entries of a Russian Jewish immigrant. By analyzing each journal entry through the use of a variety of theoretical formats, Abramson shows how to do case study research and use the results to enhance our understanding of human behavior. "A fine and welcome addition to the scientific study of lives. Paul Abramson writes both from the standpoint of a personal quest and from the psychosocial assessment of case studies. The result is an honest and clearly written human account." --Gilbert Herdt, University of Chicago "What better task for a psychologist than unraveling the myths and legends of family history? Professor Abramson interprets the Yiddish diaries of his grandfather, a Russian Jewish immigrant to the U.S., and follows him through painful struggles to make a living, to delight in a granddaughter, to the birth of his grandson (the author) shortly before his death. This absorbing quest for familial truth is supplemented by two arguments for the place of such case studies in the scientific enterprise." --William McKinley Runyan, University of California at Berkeley "This book is at once an engaging personal quest to understand another generation and a thoughtful reflection on the use of single case studies in psychological science." --Ruthellen Josselson, Towson State University

Editorial Review:

Conducting Survey Research in the Social Sciences presents basic concepts and general guidelines for those who are interested in conducting a survey by breaking the process down into eight steps and twenty-three questions. It outlines the appropriate sequential steps necessary to help the reader initiate and develop a survey. Following each of the eight steps as depicted in the eight chapters and answering the questions provided enables the creation of an effective survey. The authors also include three fictitious vignettes to illustrate how the decisions should be made, and how proper survey research should be conducted to meet many different needs.

From the street corners of the North End of Boston to the Basque regions of Spain, renowned sociologist William Foote Whyte has been a pioneer in developing methods and theories that have changed and expanded the way that we look at social structures and the individuals within them. Now, Whyte passes on his experience and knowledge with a look at problems he encountered in the field, and how he was able to overcome them. This book is both a guide through the practical and conceptual complexities and problems associated with fieldwork, as well as a look back on the life of one of the most interesting and important sociologists of our time.

Editorial Review:

This collection originated in, and is, an interdisciplinary dialogue. The subject of conversation is the social sciences in the twentieth century and the role of large-scale philanthropy, using Rockefeller philanthropy in particular as a case study. The intention is to draw a much needed integration of historical, theoretical, and philosophical perspectives on the development of modern knowledge systems and their mentors. The dialogue builds on the work of earlier historians and philosophers of science as well as pioneers in the study of philanthropy. Earlier descriptive studies have given way in the past 20 years to the more analytic stance taken by the authors represented in this volume.

Editorial Review:

For years, social psychologists and anthropologists have argued about the best way to study social representations. This book shows how different empirical approaches to the study of social representations are viable and can even be complementary. The first part of the book presents key arguments concerning the relationship between theory and method. Topics addressed include ethnographic approaches to social representations, the study of children's representations, and the analysis of discourse. The second half deals with a variety of research topics, but a question central to all of them concerns the circumstances under which one can be certain of having described a social representation. The answer lies in the use of multivariate statistical analysis, which provides the necessary degree of accuracy. The use of this valuable technique is fully explained.
