Editorial Review:

Called to live in the world, but not to be of it, Christians must maintain a balancing act that becomes more precarious the further our culture departs from its Judeo-Christian roots. How should members of the church interact with such a culture, especially as deeply enmeshed as most of us have become?

D. A. Carson applies his masterful touch to this problem. He begins by exploring the classic typology of H. Richard Niebuhr and his five options for understanding culture. Carson proposes that these disparate options are in reality one still larger vision. Using the Bible's own story line and the categories of biblical theology, he attempts to work out what that unifying vision is. Carson acknowledges the helpfulness of Niebuhr's grid and other similar matrices but warns against giving them canonical force.

More than just theoretical, Christ and Culture Revisited is also designed practically to help Christians untangle current messy debates on living in the world. Carson emphasizes that the relation between Christ and culture is not limited to an either/or cultural paradigm -- Christ against culture or Christ transforming culture. Instead Carson offers his own paradigm in which all the categories of biblical theology must be kept in mind simultaneously to inform the Christian worldview.

Though several other books on culture interact with Niebuhr, none of them takes anything like the biblical-theological approach adopted here. Ground-breaking and challenging, Christ and Culture Revisited is a tour de force.

I can't state enough how much I put into this book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Killing Yourself to Live is a stand out in Klosterman's career. It is not his Spin writings, it is not Fargo Rock City, it is not Sex Drugs and cocoa Puffs, it is a stand out. You don't always have to agree with Klosterman's ideas on music, movies, pop culture ideas. Instead, take the book for what it is, a story about relationships. After reading this book, I took a long hard look at the women in my life and really thought long and hard about the lessons that I could learn from this book.

Klosterman says that the book is 85% of a true story and I believe that considering that the stories are so heartfelt, warm, and sometimes heart breaking. I've given it out to several female friends who have come back to me and said things related to the book and said how similar they are to our relationships. The book is universal. Seriously, go read it. It is amazing.

Editorial Review:

For 6,557 miles, Chuck Klosterman thought about dying. He drove a rental car from New York to Rhode Island to Georgia to Mississippi to Iowa to Minneapolis to Fargo to Seattle, and he chased death and rock 'n' roll all the way. Within the span of twenty-one days, Chuck had three relationships end -- one by choice, one by chance, and one by exhaustion. He snorted cocaine in a graveyard. He walked a half-mile through a bean field. A man in Dickinson, North Dakota, explained to him why we have fewer windmills than we used to. He listened to the KISS solo albums and the Rod Stewart box set. At one point, poisonous snakes became involved. The road is hard. From the Chelsea Hotel to the swampland where Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane went down to the site where Kurt Cobain blew his head off, Chuck explored every brand of rock star demise. He wanted to know why the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing...and what this means for the rest of us.

The most comprehensive book on contemporary families 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is far more than a textbook. Filled with fascinating history and trends, this is a literary cornucopia on marriage, children, gender roles, dating, sexuality, and much more. Although written by a reknowned sociologist, the information can be equally utilized in a college class or by an individual, who is seeking current empowering information. Benokraitis provides a multitude of data on the changes in the structure of marriage and families, the choices that social groups are offered, as well as the constraints that place limits on many families in contemporary society. The book poses questions, offers insights, and summarizes critical concepts on the roles of the evolving family.
I will be utilizing this text to teach a Sociology course on Marriage & Family. It is filled with exercises, simple graphs, personal anecdotes, and outstanding summaries. This is the 5th edition, but I studied the 2nd edition 11 years ago as an undergraduate. If possible, this wonderful, comprehensive book is even better now. I cannot recommend it enough!!

Editorial Review:

This textbook introduces students to the study of marriage and the family in ways they can easily relate to. The text gives equal and balanced attention to people of all racial, ethnic, and other societal groups, and treats a variety of lifestyles with equal attention. The author focuses on the way families are changing, and acknowledges the constraints that families face today.

OK in a pinch 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I bought this product because my son had one (also called the "Shark") that would pick up sizable dog kibbies off the floor. This one was $20.00 more than he paid and it does an OK job if you're looking for a quick cleanup. The suction does not seem to be nearly that of what my son had, but it will pick up dog hair and crumbs and such. Also, I find that the bagless compartment has to be emptied quite often. Sorry, I couldn't say more. I was really excited to buy this machine, but not so excited when I actually used it.

Guaranteed to Improve Your Marriage 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For a short book, this one packs it all in. This is outstanding as a pre-marriage book as well as an indispensable aid for husbands. If you were to bring these principles into your marriage, it would be guaranteed to improve. Even if you've read a bunch of marriage books I think you'll still learn some new stuff in this one. This book is very useful and user friendly, especially for those who like lists. I'm guessing this will be a book I'll keep referring to...

Editorial Review:

A how-to book for men that seeks to clarify distinctions between the sexes with a view toward building a stronger marital relationship with this understanding.

Powerful self help book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are really committed to personal growth and to not repeating the same old mistakes in your next relationship, then this is the book. it is not an easy read. I was recommended this book by my therapist and it's the most intense self help book I have ever worked through (and I have been doing this for some time).
Doing the exercises in the book has helped me to bring all kinds of thoughts and habits that I wasn't aware of into consciousness where I stand a chance of healing them and doing things differently in the future. The process has been painful and uncomfortable at times and I had to take breaks and come back to it, but it has accelerated my personal growth dramatically. Really worth it.

Another excellent self help book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is another excellent book by Harville Hendrix in which you can learn a lot about what makes you do the things you do in a relationship, and why others do what they do. I found both this book and Hendrix's Guide for Couples extremely enlightening and I've read a lot of self-help books! (The Guide for Couples is fine for Singles, by the way)

Editorial Review:

Philip Miller and Molly Devon think that S/M is fun, and "that reading about it should be fun, too." Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns is definitely fun, not to mention approachable, chatty, and insightful. What makes it truly special, however, is the sheer weight of loving details. There's clear explanations and detailed tutorials for beginners, as general as "safe, sane, and consensual" and as specific as "you will be swinging the whip with your arm pivoting at the shoulder." There's also solid advice, safety measures, steamy suggestions, plenty of black-and-white photographs, useful and humorous drawings, an extensive glossary, and over 900 entries of S/M clothing and equipment vendors, publications, computer bulletin boards, and organizations worldwide. As sadomasochism is a practice that's still taboo for many people, the chapter on finding partners and sharing your fantasies with existing partners can be invaluable.

Screw the Roses enthusiastically covers all the basics and even some of the not-so-basics--bondage, negotiation, sex, endorphins, dominance and submission, toys, safety, S/M community, and beyond. It's written primarily from the point of view of male dominant/female submissive interactions, but it's easily translatable into valuable advice for any relationship configuration. Miller and Devon's explanations of not just the how, but also the why, of sadomasochism are honest, sexy, funny--and a must-have for anyone who wants to learn about sadism, masochism, dominance, submission, or bondage. --Cheryl Trooskin

A must have resource for highly effective multicultural / multinational leadership... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a combat tested USAF E3 AWACS command pilot (over 1900+ hours of total flight experience), this book is a potent resource for anyone seeking to gain insights on how best to manage a multicultural / multinational workspace.

Wonderful framework for thinking about cultural differences 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A must-read for anyone interested in the subject area.

The new and revised content also relate Hofstede's original groundbreaking research to the more recent work of other renowned scholars in the field (such as Ronald Inglehart of the Univ of Michigan and the World Values Survery). These links make his work even more compelling and make you start to think that we may be inching closer to a more universally agreed upon framework for thinking about cultural differences.

Editorial Review:

Despite calls for better co-operation between countries and different cultures, there is still confrontation between people, groups and nations. But at the same time they are exposed to common problems which demand co-operation for the solution of these problems. Cultures and Organizations helps to understand the differences in the way strategists and their followers think, offering practical solutions for those in business to help solve conflict between different groups.

Excellent collection, a standard in anthro -- and the 12th is DIFFERENT from the11th 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I've used this collection off and on for years in teaching Introduction to Cultural Anthropology. It's a great book, a real standard in anthropology. Honestly, I think the relevance and quality of the essays varies from edition to edition. I liked the 11th more than the 12th. Sometimes a 'favorite' essay gets replaced; and then in the next edition it is returned. Go figure.

I note that sellers of used copies are claiming that the 11th edition is virtually the same as the 12th, that nearly every article is the same. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how often I have students believe this and buy the 11th edition, then struggle all semester because they don't have the chapters I've assigned. Only someone who has never used the book in class, either as a student or a teacher, would make such an egregiously wrong claim. So, if you're looking for a nice, cheap, used version, make sure that you buy the edition being used in your class. Most teachers will not assign every single chapter in the book; most select 8-12 chapters, and they can well be the chapters that are not in the older edition.

Caveat Emptor ...

Editorial Review:

An ideal complement to standard anthropology texts or a stand-alone text/reader, the best-selling Conformity and Conflict continues to offer students an in-depth look at anthropology as a powerful way to study human behavior and events. The 37 articles cover a broad range of theoretical perspectives and demonstrate basic anthropological concepts. The Twelfth Edition retains the accessibility of the previous editions and the view that anthropology provides a fascinating perspective on the human experience.

12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

100 Photographs that changed the world can only be described as an intimate and emotional view of our world over the last century. The book was created by Time magazine, many of the photos coming straight from their covers. Many of the pictures are published elsewhere and have no doubt been seen by many people, but having them put together in this fashion is amazing. Complete with date and description, you find yourself having a little history lesson without even knowing it. Every page is readable and interesting, it will definitely keep your attention.

There are pictures from "The Arts", "Science and Nature", "Society", and "War and Peace". Beginning with the first photo ever taken and moving on to amazing things like the ex-ray that allowed to discovery of the double helix in our DNA. There are also many controversial issues such as lynching in the south, and young black students being sprayed by a fire hose; showing just how horrible slavery and racism really has been in America. There are pictures of the many starving children from other countries with their tiny arms and legs and huge bellies created from the horrible conditions that they live in every day. There is no question that many of these photos are hard to look at, but they force you to face the reality of our unjust world. They document some of the many mistakes we have made in the last 100 years and all that we have learned from them. It also includes groundbreaking photos such as the first picture taken of a baby inside of a mothers womb, the very first photo of the earth from the surface of the moon, and JFK's assassination. They are undeniably breath taking, heart breaking, and thought provoking. Even if all of these pictures did not actually change the world. They definitely changed the way we view the world. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, there are simply not enough words to describe the power and emotion contained in these photographs.

This book is simply a must have for any library. Young or old, it is a book that you will undoubtedly pull from the shelf many times. Definitely the kind of book that parents should look at with their children to help them learn about history. I'm sure the pictures will provoke questions and curiosity from both sides, and it is a great way to learn together. It is the kind of book that you can pass on through generations of your family and it will be just as valuable to them as it is to us. We are so lucky to have to opportunity to be able to document our lives with pictures, which has only been possible for about the last hundred years. We need to take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity. Don't pass up the chance to own a book that is this powerful.

Editorial Review:

he power of pictures is celebrated in this portfolio of the most forceful still images of all time. Robert Capa's dispatches from the beach at Normandy and Joe Rosenthal's photographic report of Iwo Jima stirred a nation, as did-in quite an opposite way-Eddie Adams' and Larry Burrows' searing imagery from Vietnam.LIFE thinks outside the box in this book: Did Marilyn Monroe's pinup change the world?Did Harry Benson's photography of the Beatles deplaning in New York in 1964 alter our cultural focus? The pictures in this book are sometimes beautiful, often striking-and undeniably powerful.
