The evolution of human sex 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The evolutionist Richard Dawkins once said that he would have written a book on the evolution of sex if Jared Diamond hadn't had done such a good job of it with `Why is Sex fun?' If you are interested in evolution or the evolution of human sexuality then this scientific entry is an imperative. However if you are looking for a book that just does cheap thrills or agony aunt pseudo-explanations, go elsewhere.

Jared Diamond is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of `Guns, germs and steel' fame. He has a talent for making science interesting and writes extremely eloquently and often quite wittily.

The book is quite short but the material brought forth in it is an awareness raiser. Diamond starts by addressing the issue of human sexuality in relation to other animals and indicates a surprising uniqueness to how we do it and in many cases the inclusion of a recreational aspect that evades most other species and demands explanation. Diamond uses evolutionary pressures to explain why the sexes developed and the roles that the genders play with respect to anatomy and biology. The non-evolution of male lactation has a few surprises in store and then it is time to explain why we have recreational sex which finds its reason in concealed ovulation. There is a focus on why men behave in the role they do if it seems that women end up doing more work. The show-off male seems to have an evolutionary advantage because when he eventually manages to brings home the bacon he tends to bring home a butcher shop. There is a massive surprise in store for why the female menopause has evolved and has to do with old people being used as information storage retrieval devices instead of offspring producers. Diamond finishes up by explaining the evolution of sexual signalling before leaving us with the enigma of penis size that has yet to find a suitable evolutionary explanation.

This is far from a simple book but stick with it and you will learn some extraordinary things about why we are the way we are. I am sure this book will also help people get over certain guilt trips they might be on. I cannot over recommend its value and contribution to our biological lives.

Editorial Review:

An entertaining and informative study of human sexuality explores how and why humans' sex lives differ radically from those of other animals and examines the evolutionary forces and factors that have shaped human sexual distinctions.

Editorial Review:

Vintage aprons and modern designs are turning up in movies, magazine spreads, upscale shops, and hip retail venues like Anthropologie, whose trendy line of aprons is selling as fast as they can stock them. The Apron Book is an infectiously enthusiastic guide to aprons, old and new, that are suddenly everywhere.

Aprons take us back to our favorite place¿hearth and home. Vintage aprons help us remember home and family the way they used to be, while bright and sassy contemporary aprons confirm that nesting is all the rage. Actress and trendsetter Julia Roberts has a closetful of vintage aprons. Celebrity custom-made apron auctions have become an annual event for several popular charities in the past few years.

The Apron Book provides full-color photos of new and vintage aprons from the author's collection, patterns for four basic apron styles and myriad variations, recipes, tips on collecting and preserving vintage aprons, and heart-tugging stories from the author's traveling apron exhibit. The book also explores the heyday of aprons and looks at the various roles aprons still play when worn in the kitchen, around the house, by the backyard grill, on the job, and for special occasions.

Warm and inviting¿but like an apron quite practical!¿this book is a celebration of a great American icon and reminds us of what we loved about the people who wore them.

Interesting read 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Very interesting read. The various authors seem to have done their homework - not only on philosophical ideas, but on the Batman mythos as well, and actually do a really good job of citing their sources and backing their claims with actual Batman storylines.

It's not the easiest read in the world - if you are expecting a graphic novel, think again - but philosophy itself isn't an easy subject to cover.

I like the fact they bring well-known philosophers' work to bear on the subject (Nietzsche, Singer, Kierkegaard for instance) so I was able to learn a little bit about them as well.

Overall a fun read, I enjoyed it.

Editorial Review:

Why doesn't Batman just kill the Joker and end everyone's misery?

Can we hold the Joker morally responsible for his actions?

Is Batman better than Superman?

If everyone followed Batman's example,

would Gotham be a better place?

What is the Tao of the Bat?

Batman is one of the most complex characters ever to appear in comic books, graphic novels, and on the big screen. What philosophical trials does this superhero confront in order to keep Gotham safe? Combing through seventy years of comic books, television shows, and movies, Batman and Philosophy explores how the Dark Knight grapples with ethical conundrums, moral responsibility, his identity crisis, the moral weight he carries to avenge his murdered parents, and much more. How does this caped crusader measure up against the teachings of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Kierkegaard, and Lao Tzu?

Amazing variety of style should appeal to all 5 out of 5 stars.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1RFXHAE2PQ5KS This book is actually much better than I thought. Probably because I'm looking at them in full size instead of the small web images I found on the Internet.

It has a very satisfying thickness at 320 pages. The dust jacket is smooth, nice to touch, non-glossy over a soft cover. The paper stock is thick matte and the colour reproduction is wonderful.

Hundreds of artists have come together to contribute Street Fighter art for the book. As a result, the variety in terms of style is amazing. Some of the styles included are manga, realistic caricature, chibi, game art, vector and many other.

I've read of artists who blogged about their work being rejected. I can understand why because the quality of artwork in this book is very high.

UDON has also allowed artists to promote their work on their individual blogs. Over the past few months, I've seen a lot of artists blogging about their art and the book. It's really great to finally see the book in print.

This art book belongs to the you-can-enjoy-it-even-if-you're-not-a-Street-Fighter-fan category.

It's well worth every single cent I spent, and I'm not a Street Fighter fan.

There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.

Editorial Review:

Fine art meets martial arts! It's been 20 years since legendary video game developer Capcom unleashed Street Fighter upon an unsuspecting gaming public. Since then the game has become a worldwide phenomenon, with the 'fighting game' genre now a staple of the video game industry and dozens of memorable Street Fighter characters entering the realm of pop culture. UDON Entertainment's Street Fighter Tribute is a special volume of original illustrations from artists all around the globe, professionals and fans alike, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise. Inside are over 200 brand-new pieces portraying the Street Fighter cast in a dizzying array of styles and designs, from ultra-rendered realistic paintings through to abstract and iconic. This is a video game art gallery in a book, bursting with inspiration and energy.

Working Wonders 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the most interesting text books I have read. It is easy to read and filled with Tables or pictures that help translate the information. I would recommend this book for the student and person who is interested in learning about sexuality.

Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Should be required reading at the high school level 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm taking a "Sexual Psychology" class, and this book details the nature of humans' need for sexual gratification. It gives detail illustrations and picts on both, the male and female genitals, how and why they work, the chemical actions that take place inside the human body which causes men and women to seek each other out, either of the opposite gender, or the same gender. It gives in fine detail, how a fertilized egg develops into a male or female; how the sperm cell's chromosome will influence the egg into forming either the female or male genitals. I mention "female" first because the human egg cell is defaulted to develop into a female, unless the sperm cell says otherwise. The book fails to mention that not all sperm cells are designed to fertilize the egg, which implies the authors disagree with the British findings. I recommend "Sperm Wars" by Robin Baker (to learn what the author neglects to mention about sperm), also available on Amazon. The authors detail not only heterosexuals, but gives scientific data on why some people grow up as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. It further takes into account social culture, and how sex attitudes may differ in developed nations, versus 3rd-world nations. Another "plus" to how the author had written, is that it's easy to understand. Unlike biology and chemistry textbooks that are written with "big words" in every paragraph, this book is written with high school graduates in mind. It was very easy to follow along, and I wasn't reaching for the dictionary every 10 minutes to look up a word, like I'm doing when I read my other textbooks. To break the monotony of reading and absorbing all this data, the author would make a few humorous remark to elicit a smile or laughter from it's readers. My greatest regret is wishing I had come across this information earlier in life. I'm now in my late 40s, had gone back to college to pursue a degree because my trucking job is slowly being taken over by cheaper Mexican truckers. I've had pass problems with girlfriend relationships, and being confused with my desire for other women. Had I read this book earlier in my life (late teens), I would've handled my difficulties a lot better. As I'm typing this, I've only read the first 7 chapters, and there are 19 chapters in all. This book is a "must-have" to include in your personal library. Even if you have no time to take a class in psychology, reading this book will give you a better perspective on how and why people behave the way they do.

Editorial Review:

Integrating multicultural and multi-ethnic perspectives throughout the text, this work aims to broaden student understanding of the range of cultural differences in human sexual experiences both around the world and within society. It includes attention to AIDS, STDs and other critical problems such as date rape, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and teenage pregnancy.

I look at this book every day 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

every page of No Regrets is inspirational--the people who get the most absurd tattoos are the bravest souls on earth. they're not afraid to share with all the world what carries great meaning for them. my thanks to the authors for canvassing far and wide to select the very best (and very worst, and very most ridiculous) body art.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Phil, Gay Unicorns, and Jesus Christ...

They're all tattooed on someone's ass. Or face, or whatever. Remember that time you were wasted and thought it would be a good idea to get a tattoo on your leg of Maury Povich shaking hands with Sasquatch, but your friends talked you out of it at the last second? Well, some people don't have any friends...

Aviva Yael and P. M. Chen spent a year going to tattoo conventions and tattoo studios all over the country, chasing, stalking, e-mailing, calling, interviewing, ambushing, and hunting down whomever they could in order to find the most insane tattoos out there. What started out as a joke in a bar became a year-long tattoo safari that's presented here in all its full color, balls-to-the-wall, train-wreck/beauty-pageant glory.

Editorial Review:

Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America is a pioneering text in many ways. The first text to achieve a full integration of cutting-edge research with a contemporary "sex-positive" approach, it also strives to represent the modern, diverse world that students encounter outside the classroom. Both within the text itself and throughout the exemplary art and photo program, the focus is on inclusion. Written by a leading sexuality researcher and experienced teachers of the human sexuality course, Human Sexuality has been lauded by students and instructors alike for providing the most integrated and non-judgmental view of sexual orientation available. This modern theme, along with the thorough coverage of sexuality and the media, engaging writing style, and biopsychosocial orientation, make the text a perennial best-seller. The new sixth edition builds on these strengths and adds updated information, a new design, and a highly crafted resource program to make the book more useful than ever..

What is literary theory? Is there a relationship between literature and culture? In fact, what is literature, and does it matter? These questions and more are addressed in Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction, a book which steers a clear path through a subject which is often perceived to be complex and impenetrable.
Jonathan Culler, an extremely lucid commentator and much admired in the field of literary theory, offers discerning insights into such theories as the nature of language and meaning, and whether literature is a form of self-expression or a method of appeal to an audience. Concise yet thorough, Literary Theory also outlines the ideas behind a number of different schools: deconstruction, semiotics, postcolonial theory, and structuralism, among others.
From topics such as literature and social identity to poetry, poetics, and rhetoric, Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction is a welcome guide for anyone interested in the importance of literature and the debates surrounding it.
