Big Apple's snapper 3 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Weegee knew what kind of photos the editors of the New York daily tabloids wanted, in-your-face gutsy black and whites to capture the reader's imagination over the breakfast table. He always delivered too. This reprint of his 1945 book captures the energy of the Big Apple and yet there are no shots of skyscrapers. Instead the (mostly) ordinary folk of the city are shown getting on with their lives and deaths.

Many of the photos are taken at night, a Weegee trademark. Inside buildings he used infrared film so he could shoot in near blackness and capture his subjects displaying emotions they would hide, had they known a camera was about. Out on the street he captured the latest human tragedy in stark close-up with a blinding flash of his Speed Graphic camera.

The contents of this book are an amazing selection of photos but I was very disappointed by the reproduction, so only three stars. As far as I can tell, the photos have been scanned from the 1945 book rather than from original prints. The paper is coarse which doesn't help the reproduction either. This looks not much better than a book of photocopies. Far better I think to go for Miles Barth's Weegee's World. Although it does not have every photo from 'Naked City', the 250 included are printed as duotones on glossy paper, I particularly like this book because it shows many photos as original un-cropped prints. For instance, in his famous photo, 'The Critic' the three bystanders to the left of the two socialites are usually cropped out but here you can see how great the original was. This book also has three excellent essays about Weegee and his influence on other photographers in the Forties.

Another choice might be Weegee's New York Photographs, 1935-1960 with 335 photos from 1935 to 1960 and like the Barth book it is large size and beautifully printed (the photos are duotones) on glossy paper and could possibly have all the photos in Naked City.

Editorial Review:

The ultimate collection of Weegee's shocking tabloid photographs, from the ultimate tabloid city.

For Naked City, his first collection, Weegee cruised the streets of 1940s New York in the wee hours in search of the sensational. Lewd, louche, licentious but always brimming with life (except when brimming with death), Weegee's photographs have endured decades of modern art criticism and are again enjoying a much-deserved cult revival.

Editorial Review:

Quotes from the book "Much of the social history of the Western world, over the past three decades, has been a history of replacing what worked with what sounded good. In area after area—crime, education, housing, race relations—the situation has gotten worse after the bright new theories were put into operation. The amazing thing is that this history of failure and disaster has neither discouraged the social engineers nor discredited them." "Some things must be done on faith, but the most dangerous kind of faith is that which masquerades as 'science.' As the pretense of science has replaced commonsense experience, we have abandoned many old-fashioned practices that worked in favor of high-sounding innovations that have led to disaster." "The assumption that spending more of the taxpayers' money will make things better has survived all kinds of evidence that it has made things worse. The black family—which survived slavery, discrimination, poverty, wars, and depressions—began to come apart as the federal government moved in with its well-financed programs to 'help.'" "Worst of all, guilt has so furtively stolen into many hearts and minds that people feel apologetic about being civilized, educated, and productive when others are barbaric, uneducated, and parasitic. When civilization apologizes to barbarism, something has gone very wrong at a very fundamental level."

I love it. If Only I Could Read It! 5 out of 5 stars.
49 of 57 people found this review helpful.

I am influenced by Chomsky more than any other political philosopher (although he seems to encompass much more than a mere career categorization). I've studied him on and off for the past five years, and I find it harder and harder to rely on mass media (TV, radio, movies, increasingly more of the internet) for any information. It's like lost innocence. One can never look at these things the same after reading Chomsky.

In this book, he tackles these themes, but concentrates a great deal on U.S. international relations. The equation is basically this: corporations control the government and own the media. U.S. international relations are directly affected and influenced by the whims of multinationals; namely the desire for [inexpensive] production and [inexpensive] resources, exploiting civilians and foreign lands to achieve these means. The government is in the pocket of the corporations.

The ordinary American has little say. We may vote; but we vote for one party; solely representing the interests of the rich, and the huge corporations.

That's a bit of Chomsky in a nutshell. This book supports these arguments with EXHAUSTIVE research. I admit, I found it exhausting to read, but not from lack of interest. He is detailed; which makes his arguments valid. He uses countless examples, all supported by the contradictory historical actions and propaganda of U.S. foreign relations; where the government lies to the public via the media. There are so many quotes and supportive examples that the bibliography could be 40 pages long!

So, I love Chomsky. However I really don't like reading him; but I try. I find the easiest way to get the big picture of Chomsky's views is by watching the documentary, Manufacturing Consent, reading Z Magazine, and also "The Real Story" series of transcribed interviews with Chomsky.

Perhaps I'm just a lazy reader. However I think this book legitimizes many of Chomsky's views, in a dense, detailed, way. But without these supporting examples and quotes, his views couldn't be seen as valid.

Important Subject Matter Poorly Handled 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

With the amount of attention the country gets in the western press, you'd think that there would be a metric ton of decent books out there on the modern history of Saudi Arabia. You'd be wrong.

This one by journalist John Bradley was recommended as a good one, since he was one of the few western journalists inside Saudi at the time of the 9/11 attacks he did have unqiue access. Too bad he can't write to save his life. The chronology of the book is confused. The sentence stucture is often awful, and what is often meant to be a telling detail instead comes off as contrived. I am shocked that he has written for publications like the Economist.

Though the writing is poor, in Bradley's defense, this book is at least somewhat balanced, and he clearly has a real affection for the culture and some of the people he met there. This isn't jingositic western propoganda (like much of what is written about Saudi) but it also isn't a very good book.

Editorial Review:

Saudi Arabia: land of oil, terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism, and a crucial American ally. John R. Bradley uniquely exposes the turmoil that is shaking the House of Saud to its foundations, including the problems within the new leadership. From the heart of the secretive Islamic kingdom's urban centers to its most remote mountainous terrain, he provides intimate details and reveals regional, religious, and tribal rivalries.
Bradley highlights tensions generated by social change, the increasing restlessness of Saudi youth with limited cultural and political outlets, and the predicament of Saudi women seeking opportunities but facing constraints.
What are the implications for the Sauds and the West? This book offers a startling look at the present predicament and a troubling view of the future.

Editorial Review:

Taking a unique approach to the study of mass communication and cultural studies, MediaMaking presents the current knowledge and thoughts about the relationship among media, culture, and society. What sets this volume apart from competing texts is the approach taken and the distinguished scholarship. Rather than examining each major medium separately (newspapers, books, magazines, radio, television, film), the authors contend that mass communication cannot be studied apart from the other institutions. In society and the other dimensions of social life - each is shaping and defining the other. They hold that media can only be understood in relation to their institutional, economic, social, cultural, and historical context. As such, this book explores the variety of ways in which the media are involved in our social lives. The authors explore the different relationships between the media and the systems of social value and social differences that organize power in contemporary society. They examine how the media are reproduced and consumed and what they produce in turn. Theoretically and analytically organized with sections on media's relationship to behavior, politics, media effects, the public, globalization, organizations, meaning, and ideology, this text offers students a more comprehensive understanding of the nature of media communication processes, an absolutely necessary part of understanding contemporary life.

Broadly based and theoretically grounded, this introductory textbook will enable students of mass communication, cultural studies, and sociology, to better understand how the world is shaped by human actions and decisions, and media communication.

Editorial Review:

"The first edition of Qualitative Communication Research Methods set a high standard for accessibility, thoroughness, and depth. The second edition takes that standard even higher. Lindlof and Taylor have written a complete text that addresses the theory and technique of qualitative research across a breadth of approaches with substantive and illuminating examples drawn from a variety of topical areas. The writing is exemplary—engaging, careful and dead on. The authors address the problems and controversies of research without bogging down in indecision or glossing to happy endings. The pedagogy is solid. This is a book for the practitioner and the student. It is a "go to" text."

--James Anderson, University of Utah

"I used the first edition of this book in my graduate qualitative methods class, and I look forward to using the second edition this fall. The changes are excellent. The text is even more readable and comprehensive, it has been up-dated, and includes all the topics pertinent to understanding and doing Communication qualitative research. The new edition contains exercises and many examples and exemplars, a well as new chapters on computer mediated qualitative research and on authoring and writing."

--Carolyn Ellis, University of South Florida

The Second Edition of Qualitative Communication Research Methods builds on the strengths of the first edition, taking readers through every step of the qualitative research process -- from the research idea to the finished report. Unique for its coverage of the entire discipline of Communication, this text now includes a new chapter on computer-mediated communication (identities, relationships, and communities) as well as fully updated and expanded key topics including: developing research questions, coding data, using computers in analysis, and transcription. Processes covered in the text include interviewing, writing field notes, and creating ethical relationships with participants.

Features:

  • In-depth discussion of research methods, designs, types of analysis, and writing strategies
  • Student exercises and helpful samples of field research texts and materials
  • Solutions to issues and problems of qualitative communication research
  • Progressive approach to qualitative research and its contribution to the knowledge of rapidly changing technological cultures
  • Examination of how new directions in critical and interpretive theory are influencing research practice in Communication.

Qualitative Communication Research Methods, Second Edition, provides students with numerous examples of work in the field illustrating how studies are designed, carried out, written, evaluated, and applied to theory. This interesting and accessible text provides a rewarding and challenging introduction to qualitative methodology.

I loved this book it gives a lot of good advice of how to be a better person and how to deal with different situations like having an alcoholic parent, rape, unwanted pregnancies, etc. makes you look at life from a different perspective.

How this book has influenced my life. 5 out of 5 stars.

In Volar Sobre el Pantano by Carlos Cuauhtémoc Sanchez the basic plot is that the husband receives and urgent letter of help from his sister in a hospital from which they no nothing of and he and his wife are trying to reach her and see what is going on. During this journey they are telling themselves the problems they have had in there lives. The main characters in this story are the husband (Zahib), wife (Lisbeth), and Zahib's sister (Alma). The events in the story were that Zahib and his wife Lisbeth go to the airport and during the flight they talk about the problems they had in life and then they finally reach the destination of the flight and hurry to the hospital to see what hospital it is and if Alma (Zahib's sister) is still there. After learning she is not there they go to her apartment and they find her. She refuses help from anyone, but after Lisbeth talks to her she agrees to ask for help. Then the story ends. This Story takes place in Zahib's house, the airplane, the hospital, the hotel and the apartment. This book is mostly was written in a first person format with a lot of dialogue. Most of the paragraphs are at least 10 sentences long and the chapters are normally 7 pages long. This book did not take me long to read because it is so inspiring and exciting that it makes you want to read more and more until you finally finish it.
This book is influential, because it teaches you that your word values a lot and that people have lots of problems in life but we must learn to not take revenge on those that brought that pain, but to try to help ourselves and the other people involved in the situation. I use to think that my word did not value a lot, because no one took my words seriously. Now after reading this book I understand that if I don't stand up to those who don't take my words seriously and tell them that I believe that I have a right to be heard then I will not be able to stand up for what I believe in. This book also taught me that everyone has problems and if they act in a way that is hurtful or that is nice they will receive consequences because everything has a consequence it is not necessarily a good one or a bad one. These consequences can come at any time they could come soon or they could take years to come but they will come and when they come you will either be awarded or be held responsible for your actions.

Don't waste your time with this book 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I spent many years in China. Trust me, the writer of this book was more or less COMPLETELY unknown there. Idiotically, I still read some of this book.

It's just a self-promoting waste of time and it feeds a million-and-one stereotypes.

Editorial Review:

Hoping To Improve Her Chinese and broaden her cultural horizons, Rachel DeWoskin went to work for an American PR firm in China. Before she knew it, she was not just exploring but making Chinese culture--as the sexy, aggressive, fearless Jexi, star of a wildly successful soap opera. A sort of Chinese counterpart to "Sex in the City" revolving around Chinese-Western culture clashes, the show was called "Foreign Babes in Beijing." Living the clashes in real life while playing out a parallel version onscreen, Rachel forms a group of friends with whom she witnesses the vast changes sweeping through China as the country pursues the new maxim that "to get rich is glorious." In only a few years, billboards, stylish bars and discos, international restaurants, fashion shows, divorce, foreign visitors, and cross-cultural love affairs transform the face of China's capital. Foreign Babes in Beijing is as astute and informative as it is witty, moving, and entertaining.

Timely, eye opening, must read! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I loved this author's other books, so I was really looking forward to "Mexican Enough." It does not disappoint. She routinely throws herself into the craziest situations (like sneaking into a prison in Oaxaca, or spending the night in a Zapatista camp in Chiapas) and finds the most amazing stories. I learned so much about Mexico, from the impact of NAFTA and immigration, to pop culture like lucha libre (think: Nacho Libre). Some of the stories are pretty heartbreaking, but there is a lot of humor as well. Even though I am not Latina, I can relate to her questioning her cultural identity, and whether or not she is "enough." It also reminds me of this ongoing debate about Obama being "black enough." That makes this an especially timely book.

Editorial Review:

Growing up in a half-white, half-brown town and family in South Texas, Stephanie Elizondo Griest struggled with her cultural identity. Upon turning thirty, she ventured to her mother's native Mexico to do some root-searching and stumbled upon a social movement that shook the nation to its core.

Mexican Enough chronicles her adventures rumbling with luchadores (professional wrestlers), marching with rebel teachers in Oaxaca, investigating the murder of a prominent gay activist, and sneaking into a prison to meet with indigenous resistance fighters. She also visits families of the undocumented workers she befriended back home. Travel mates include a Polish thief, a Border Patrol agent, and a sultry dominatrix. Part memoir, part journalistic reportage, Mexican Enough illuminates how we cast off our identity in our youth, only to strive to find it again as adults -- and the lessons to be learned along the way.

Editorial Review:

Recipient of the 1994 Critics' Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association

"This exposition of the principles of narrative analysis is a crisp and thankfully accessible introduction to a range of more or less formal techniques for the interpretation of first-person oral narratives. . . . Riessman organizes her discussion in a down-to-earth way. . . ."

--Patricia Uberoi in Contributions to Indian Sociology

"Her concise and well-organized book, Narrative Analysis, contributes important insights to the qualitative methods literature. It is directed toward scholars and graduate students of various disciplines, as a methodological guide for analyzing transcripts of first-person stories or experiences. The book is also relevant for researchers interested in the substantive areas of women's lives and medical sociology . . . . Riessman's book provides a useful guide for marketing researchers; particularly those aligned with the interpretive camp . . . . because marketing researchers are increasingly interested in studying both consumers' and managers' stories. . . Narrative Analysis should be useful to an even wider audience."

--George M. Zinkhan & Denise E. Delorme in Journal of Marketing

"Catherine Kohler Riessman's handbook not only provides a basic introduction to the social scientist using narrative as a tool, but also offers a strand of feminist research as her central example . . . . It is a useful text to include in course offerings on discourse analysis."

--Discourse and Society

"The book offers communication researchers some of the best recent work on qualitative inquiry in the human disciplines . . . . Published by Sage, the leading publisher of qualitative research in the social sciences today . . . . The heart of her tightly argued text turns on forms of narrative (linked stories, conversations, life stories) and their analysis . . . . This work should be read against and alongside Atkinson and Silverman . . . . This work brings the communication scholar up-to-date on where qualitative methods are in current sociological and educational discourse." --Norman K. Denzin in Journal of Communication "[This book] does what it intends to do and does that clearly and with lively and interesting examples. I think both students and teachers will find it compelling and useful. I plan to assign it in my seminar on narrative and description next semester."

--Jay Gubrium, University of Florida

"In this text, Catherine Kohler Riessman discusses many of the important questions that face narrative scholars. As such, the book is a good introductory text for narrative methodology. For those who have read within the field previously, this work reminds the reader of some of the important questions that need to be addressed in narrative work . . . . This text is a valuable effort in an attempt to synthesize some of the main aspects of narrative methodology."

--Journal of Contemporary Ethnography

"An excellent resource for individuals interested in the systematic use of narrative in social science research."

--The American Journal of Family Therapy

People tell stories to help organize and make sense of their lives. In the past, their narratives have often been torn apart by social scientists looking for themes, variables, and specific answers to specific questions. But in recent years, the development of narrative analysis has given life to the study of the narrative as a form of information for social research. Why are they constructed as they are? How does one dissect a narrative to understand the lived experience of the narrator? What steps can the researcher take to translate these tales and life stories into usable research? Catherine Kohler Riessman provides a detailed primer on the use of narrative analysis, its theoretical underpinnings and worldview, and the methods it uses. Replete with examples and transcriptions from previous narrative studies, her book is a useful introduction to this growing body of literature.
