Editorial Review:

Acclaimed historian Stephen Ambrose begins his examination with a glance inward -- he starts this book with his brothers, his first and forever friends, and the shared experiences that join them for a lifetime, overcoming distance and misunderstandings.

He next tells of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had a golden gift for friendship and who shared a perfect trust with his younger brother, Milton, in spite of their apparently unequal stations. With great emotion, Ambrose describes the relationships of the young soldiers of Easy Company who fought and died together from Normandy to Germany, and he recalls with admiration three unlikely friends who fought in different armies in that war. He recounts the friendships of Lewis and Clark and of Crazy Horse and He Dog. Ambrose remembers and celebrates the friends he has made and kept throughout his life.

Comrades concludes with the author's recollection of his own friendship with his father. He was my first and always most important friend, Ambrose writes. I didn't learn that until the end, when he taught me the most important thing, that the love of father-son-father-son is a continuum, just as love and friendship are expansive.

Dispatches of honesty and knowledge 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

One usually hears about Latin America if there has been an unforeseen coup, a currency crisis, a new Nobel laureate or an impromptu celebrity wedding. This collection is trying to change that and the author, living alternately in New York and Mexico City, is wonderfully equipped to bring light to that region that is steeped in suspicion and mystery. Her travels take her from revolutions to political candidacies, from true believers in every corner of the political spectrum to the disenchanted masses tired of the cant and the sermons from the big brother up north. She shows the mad psychology of warfare, the impossible human dignity that blooms in every sort of adversity. Her writing is powerful because it isn't ornate but informed, distinguished and very scrupulous. Miss Guillermoprieto is a throwback to the kind of reporting that has died on the vine;she is interested in particulars, researches well and doesn't seem to be the least interested in trying to score a showcase piece that has a message but no content. She just writes down what she sees and it's mesmerizing.

Editorial Review:

Rural America is a complex mixture of peoples and cultures struggling for survival. It ranges in character from workers in manufacturing plants in Georgia to Laotian immigrants who have relocated in Kansas; from farmers committed to sustainable agriculture to entrepreneurs planning a world-class ski resort in California's Sierra Nevadas; from laid-off miners in West Virginia to Native Americans in the Southwest searching for an economy consistent with their cultural values. These are all parts of rural America, seldom heard of in the mass media but deeply reflective of the legacies left by those who settled the land. This revised and updated edition of Rural Communities bridges the gap between social theory and community change by focusing on the problems that face rural America and offering students a framework for applying sociological concepts. The authors explore such issues as the diversity among rural communities; the interactions between communities and the economy; the governmental, economic, and social resources available in rural communities; and how communities organize for action. Although the authors explore community change within a rural context, their findings are applicable to urban neighborhoods as well. The notion of empowerment-that the understanding and analysis provided through the social sciences can result in community action-is unique to this book. This book can be used as a text for introductory courses in rural sociology, social problems, and community studies or by community groups to explore their own responses to a variety of problems. The book is also the companion text to a PBS college-level telecourse and television series entitled Rural Communities: Legacy and Change. The telecourse portrays the experiences of fifteen rural communities from across the United States.

This book is a very good compilation of different aspects. What is a leader, what is communication, what is a group. Very nice to read so many aspects concerning good groups.

It has a lot of Christian references but the experienced (non Christian) reader is able to read around this.

I think this is a must read for everybody that wants to communicate or wants to operate in a group.

Editorial Review:

Em Griffin describes three kinds of groups (task groups, relationship groups, and influence groups) and explores their dynamics.

Editorial Review:

The fable of the Emperor's New Clothes is a classic example of a conspiracy of silence, a situation where everyone refuses to acknowledge an obvious truth. But the denial of social realities--whether incest, alcoholism, corruption, or even genocide-is no fairy tale.
In The Elephant in the Room, Eviatar Zerubavel sheds new light on the social and political underpinnings of silence and denial-the keeping of "open secrets." The author shows that conspiracies of silence exist at every level of society, ranging from small groups to large corporations, from personal friendships to politics. Zerubavel shows how such conspiracies evolve, illuminating the social pressures that cause people to deny what is right before their eyes. We see how each conspirator's denial is symbiotically complemented by the others', and we learn that silence is usually more intense when there are more people conspiring-and especially when there are significant power differences among them. He concludes by showing that the longer we ignore "elephants," the larger they loom in our minds, as each avoidance triggers an even greater spiral of denial.
Drawing on examples from newspapers and comedy shows to novels, children's stories, and film, the book travels back and forth across different levels of social life, and from everyday moments to large-scale historical events. At its core, The Elephant in the Room helps us understand why we ignore truths that are known to all of us.
"Eviatar Zerubavelgathers intriguing ideas for books the way ace foreign correspondents acquire great stories: by reflecting on the obvious, then probing as well as reporting."--The Philadelphia Inquirer

Poorly Written and Compiled Book 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This was an assigned reading. For the authors, thank god it was required. The book is shallow and poorly constructed. Paragraphs float around in the book with no relevance to a larger meaning or significance. Often information is written without any historical significance or context. The book seems to be merely requoting passages from other, more significant works instead of drawing larger conclusions of the time period. A lot of the information is inaccurate and poorly researched. Indeed, when writing about The New York Herald, the authors don't even both to mention when it was founded. Stay away from this book. I have never read a more difficult and poorly written book.

Editorial Review:

This text presents a cultural interpretation of the history of both traditional and nontraditional media, emphasizing that minority as well as mainstream media have impacted American history. Voices of a Nation sets media history in the context of overall historical events and themes and tries to understand the role of media in a democratic society at varied historical points. Organized chronologically, the text recognizes the significant "voices" of such non-traditional media as suffrage newspapers, ethnic newspapers, and cultural movement papers and magazines.

This Gives Parents Good Ideas For Raising Healthy Children 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Garbarino articulates very well the difficulty of raising children in a "toxic" environment. He takes an environmentalist approach or viewpoint and in a way it is very comforting because it gives good guidelines for parents on how to protect their children. He also strongly outlines ideas for social and political policy. This books gives parents a "global" view of childrearing. While it outlines the challenges it is a book of hope. It is clear, we all need to think about children if we are concerned about the future whether we have them or not.
I strongly recommend this book for parents and educators.

Very good, every parent should read...... 5 out of 5 stars.

......and please TURN OFF THE TV !!!

Turn off the TV, turn off the TV and keep them away from video games.

Stop living parallel, individualistic lives. Communicate with each other, talk to your neighbors, KNOW your children through their words, not their acts only.

This book is short, simple, but very explanatory. It'll tell you clearly what to avoid and how you can easily change your lifestyle to make it better for all your family.

Editorial Review:

A distinguished child psychologist examines the damaging impact of violence and abuse on child development and explains how to strengthen children, families, and communities to help resist and alleviate these dangerous influences.

Many fine ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Heard WHAT DO I SAY NEXT? . . . written and read by
Susan RoAne, its subtitle proves to be an apt description of what
the book is all about: TALKING YOUR WAY TO BUSINESS AND
SOCIAL SUCCESS.

There are many fine ideas presented here, all designed to make
communication just a little bit easier . . . many of them I've heard
before, yet even those I've too often forgotten.

I guarantee that by listening to or reading RoAne's work, you'll get
at least one tip that you can begin applying in a work and/or
home situation . . . to cite a few for your consideration:

Prepare for conversations by talking to yourself first. Make sure
your conversations are positive.

Always have a 7-9 second introduction for yourself.

Put your nametag on your right side. This makes it more visible
when you shake hands.

Make nametags large enough so all can read the names.

[if you forget somebody's name] Stick out your hand when you say
your name. People respond in kind 90% of the time.

Never ask, "Do you remember me?"

Conversations should have a non-compete clause.

People who say they are brutally honest are usually more
brutal than honest.

Editorial Review:

The author of the bestselling How to Work a Room shares proven strategies for developing the kind of superior communication skills that lead to great business success. A professor emeritus of business at Stanford University has found only one consistently common trait among successful MBA graduates: great conversational skills. Now, Susan RoAne, bestselling author of How to Work a Room and The Secrets of Savvy Networking, shows how people can vastly improve their conversational skills and acquire the necessary verbal tools and techniques to move forward in career and business.
