Editorial Review:

With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell's classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Anointed. Sowell, one of America's most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making -- a gap that threatens our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision of what ought to be.

Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a "landmark work" and selected for this prize "because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government." In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose "contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant." "In a wholly original manner [Sowell] succeeds in translating abstract and theoretical argument into a highly concrete and realistic discussion of the central problems of contemporary economic policy." --F. A. Hayek "This is a brilliant book. Sowell illuminates how every society operates. In the process he also shows how the performance of our own society can be improved." --Milton Friedman

Very Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Why sell a book and not accept it back if it is not the latest version? I purchased this book and it took a long time to get here-3 weeks at least and come to find out it is the WRONG addition. Ok, my fault right? Edc8 has not responded to me on how to return this item. Very Very disappointing!

In Mixed Company 3 out of 5 stars.

The book was in slightly worse condition than stated, pages and cover were very bent, but the shipping was very speedy.

Editorial Review:

Designed for courses involving Small Group Communication discussions, the acclaimed IN MIXED COMPANY thoroughly addresses the theme of communication in small groups. The author has preserved the essence that made previous editions so popular and has expanded the central unifying theme that says cooperation in small groups is usually superior to competition. The communication competence model continues to guide discussions of key small group concepts and processes. Systems theory also remains as a key theoretical component of the text and finally, an extensive discussion and analysis of power in small groups continues to separate IN MIXED COMPANY from other textbooks.

Managing organizations? 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is excellent to understand the behaivor of organizations, groups and their structures. If anyone who needs to manage a group (small or large, does not matter), must not skip these subjects. Every group, every project has different needs and a different management plan. They are different like individual person. That book shows and explains that perfectly.

Editorial Review:

Managing people and their behavior in organizations is one of the most challenging tasks anyone could face. Gibson's "Organizations: Behavior, Structure, Processes, Twelfth Edition", presents theories, research results, and applications that focus on managing organizational behavior in small, large, and global organizations. It is organized and presented in a sequence based on behavior, structure, and processes. Each part is presented as a self-contained unit and can therefore be presented in whatever sequence lecturers prefer. "Organizations" is easily adaptable to individual preferences. This edition emphasizes that the most successful managers in the global economy will be those who can anticipate, adapt, and manage change.

Completely worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was required reading in one of my high school English classes. I was against the very idea of the book from the very beginning, and I admit that. However, I found this book not to be agitating or contrary to my political beliefs, but humorous and almost completely devoid of substance.

Let me first say that many of the examples that Goldberg uses to illustrate his points are vague and he fails at many points to give specific information or credentials about the people he's quoting. Even worse, many of his little stories seem thrown into the book haphazardly, not really supporting any point at all.

Goldberg is only "Blunt and to the point" if blunt means longwinded and the point is to blather incessantly.

Also, be prepared for endless attacks on Dan Rather. It often appears that Goldberg has a deep, endless hatred and/or unnatural level of affection for the man.

Bottom line- this book proves absolutely nothing. You will not be able to reference this book in any argument on any subject. The yarns that Goldberg unwinds in heaps upon the reader are actually worth less money than the paper and ink used to record them. This man is a fool.

Editorial Review:

In his nearly thirty years at CBS News, Emmy Award winner Bernard Goldberg earned a reputation as one of the preeminent reporters in the television news business. When he looked at his own industry, however, he saw that the media far too often ignored their primary mission: to provide objective, disinterested reporting. Again and again he saw that the news slanted to the left. For years, Goldberg appealed to reporters, producers, and network executives for more balanced reporting, but no one listened. The liberal bias continued.

Now, breaking ranks and naming names, he reveals a corporate news culture in which the closed-mindedness is breathtaking and in which entertainment wins over hard news every time.

Forsyth discusses the basics of group theories. 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

As can be expected in a field as broad as group theory, Forsyth does not explain in depth the various theories of group interactions, nor does he endorse any particular one as absolutely correct. He does, however, highlight the pertinent points of each theorist so that the reader can achieve a full appreciation for the work and experiments done in this field. The text is an excellent resource for students or curious readers new to the groups studies.

Editorial Review:

In the Fifth Edition of his best-selling text, Forsyth combines an emphasis on research, empirical studies supporting theoretical understanding of groups, and case studies to illustrate the application of concepts to actual groups, thus providing students with the most comprehensive treatment of groups available. Forsyth builds each chapter around a real-life case and draws on examples from a range of disciplines including psychology, law, education, sociology, and political science. Because he tightly weaves concepts and familiar ideas together, the text takes users beyond simple exposure to basic principles and research findings to a deeper understanding of each topic.

This is a great introductory text! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Sara Trenholm is a gifted writer. This is another in a series of well prepared communication texts by this author.

The healthy balance between theory and practical advice makes it both challenging and yet easy to digest. I have used this text as a resource since it first crossed my desk in its first edition.

My only criticism of this book is that it is not visually appealing. However, the person who wants information will find it to be highly pracital and usable.

Dreadful 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be hypocritical and vacuous. Students will get little out of it that they don't already know. The author talks down to students and "dumbs down" the topics covered.

The Littlejohn textbook is much better.

Editorial Review:

Praised for its “teachability,” Thinking Through Communication provides an excellent, balanced introduction to basic theories and principles of communication, making sense of a complex field through a variety of approaches. Introduction to human communication, listening, verbal messages, nonverbal communication, interpersonal communication, group communication, organizational communication, public communication, mass media, and intercultural communication. Editorial Review:

In 1961, Jane Jacobs changed the literature of urban life forever with The Death and Life of Great American Cities, a now-classic study grounded in her observation of her own neighborhood, Greenwich Village.

In Sidewalk, Mitchell Duneier (author of the acclaimed Slim's Table) takes us back to the streets of the Village, but finds a scene very different from the one Jacobs described. Much of the architecture remains, and many people live the way Jacobs suggested, but there is another population in the Village today---poor black men who make their lives on the sidewalks by selling secondhand goods, panhandling, and scavenging books and magazines left out for recycling, and whose appearance and behavior are affronts to the sensibilities of many passersby. By now the men are known to many Village residents: Hakim Hasan, who sells "black books" and acts as an informal mentor to young men; Ishmael, Grady, Ron and Marvin, who sell magazines and other merchandise, only to have their wares thrown out by police when they leave their block to relieve themselves; Mudrick and "Joe Garbage," who sell items retrieved from the trash; Keith, who panhandles outside the ATM vestibule; and other men! (and one woman) who come and go on what they call "the blocks."

In recent years, these men and others like them have become the targets of "quality of life" campaigns in cities nationwide. Mayors scold them. Police keep after them. Businesses want them off the streets. Even liberal whites feel uneasy in their presence. These men are seen as proof of the influential "broken windows" theory, which holds that the mere appearance of social disorder leads to crime.

But Duneier contends that, far from being incitements to crime, the men on the street are necessary and beneficial to city life today, and that their behavior, which often appears disorderly, actually contributes to the order and well-being of the neighborhood. For five years, he spent time on the blocks with them - working with them at their vending tables, hearing their stories, and observing the roles they play in the ongoing life of the city. Often he was accompanied by Ovie Carter, whose photographs depict Village life with rare breadth and insight.

Sidewalk brings us into the hearts and minds of the men on the street, showing us not only their common human values but also the many practical and moral choices they must make every day. Duneier explains how cultural and political factors can spur people to self-destructive behavior, and illustrates how the same people can weave together complementary elements of a city - laws, friendships, popular culture, and the spirit of a neighborhood - in their struggle to survive.

No other recent book has managed to convey the character of contemporary urban life in all its complexity - its vitality, its class and race conflicts, and the surprising opportunities it offers for empathy among strangers. Sidewalk gives us a clear, sharp picture of city life today - as it is, and as it might be.

Detailed and theoretical 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a beginning mediator, I found this book very detailed and theoretical. I am sure that I will return to it again and again as I gain experience. I found "Basic Skills for the New Mediator (2d edition)" by Allan H. Goodman to provide a quicker and more practical overview. When used together, I believe both books are a good basis for the practicing mediator.

Great. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was great and exactly how it was described in the review. I received it at a fast pace.
Thanks.

A lot of Mediation Theory 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very instructional but dull in the reading. Also, a lot of repetition is involved, chapter by chapter. The mediator separates the chapter by topic but revisits the same cases. It would have been more logical to dedicate a certain case to a certain chapter even though that particular case involves different facets of mediation theory. I would grab the most important issue to a certain case and dedicate it only to one topic/chapter. This will be a lot more instructional and easier in the reading. Also, I found there to be some grammatical errors.
