What a group leader needs to know 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

Currently I attending a masters level course on Drug and Alcohol for Social Workers. And as such, I reviewed a number of articles and books on the group process. I found this book to contribute expanded and explicit techniques for group facilitation. It detailed the formation and goals of a group, along with specifics encountered at all of the phases of the group process. Giving specific tasks and techniques, coupled with insights on appropriate application. This book is a must for the beginning facilitator, and a fresh look for the experienced leader. It was easy to read, not full of psychojumble; and yet it has depth and enlightening observations.

Editorial Review:

Far more than a recipe book of techniques that readers can pull out at the right time, this book encourages readers not only to use techniques sensitively and creatively in their own groups, but also to go one step further to invent their own techniques.

The authors draw on their combined experiences as teachers, as consultants to mental-health professionals, and as private practitioners to provide readers with a realistic approach to group work.

Emphasizing that techniques are means, not ends, teh book is designed to enhance the group leader's ability to generate a therapeutic and human rapport between leader and members.

Editorial Review:

This text focuses on the significance of race, class, and gender; uses personal narratives to convey how problems are experienced by individuals and groups; and applies sociological perspectives throughout to examine social issues.

In the fifth edition of Social Problems in a Diverse Society, author Diana Kendall continues to focus on the significance of race, class, and gender as key factors in our understanding of social problems in the United Stated and around the globe. Throughout the text, all people - but particularly people of color and white women - are shown not merely as "victims" of social problems, but as individuals who resist discrimination and inequality and seek to bring about changes in families, schools, workplaces, and the larger society. The author, who specializes in social theory, uses the three main sociological perspectives throughout the text, along with contemporary feminist and humanist perspectives. Authentic, first person accounts - "real words from real people" create interest and show how the problems being discussed affect people as they go about their daily lives. This new edition has numerous new references, many new boxed features, and substantial updating throughout.

Everthing as promised! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Everything went as promised, book was new and it was delivered a day before I was told.

Editorial Review:

By including both theoretical analyses and ethnographic illustrations of how deviance is socially constructed, organized and managed, the Adlers' text shows students how the concepts and theories of deviance are applied to the world around them. Representing a wide variety of deviant acts, the Adlers' text challenges one to see the diversity and pervasiveness of deviance in society. The Adlers look at deviance as a component of society and examine the construction of deviance in terms of differential social power, whereby some members of society have the power to define other whole groups as deviant.

Editorial Review:

When lives are dominated by hunger, what becomes of love? When assaulted by daily acts of violence and untimely death, what happens to trust? Set in the lands of Northeast Brazil, this is an account of the everyday experience of scarcity, sickness and death that centres on the lives of the women and children of a hillside "favela". Bringing her readers to the impoverished slopes above the modern plantation town of Bom Jesus de Mata, where she has worked on and off for 25 years, the author follows three generations of shantytown women as they struggle to survive through hard work, cunning and triage. It is a story of class relations told at the most basic level of bodies, emotions, desires and needs. Most disturbing - and controversial - is her finding that mother love, as conventionally understood, is something of a bourgeois myth, a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as these women cannot, that their infants will live. The author also wrote "Saints, Scholars and Schizophrenics: Mental Illness in Rural Ireland".

Great Combination of Theory and Practice. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Over the past several years I've had to read several text books, especially those having to do with speech communication. The majority of these speech communication books I have had to read are long, dry, and dull. They tend to be filled with all sorts of theories and very little actual real-life experience examples or practice. COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS isn't like that and does one of the best jobs for a textbook of combining the theories behind small group communication with vivid, real-life examples to illustrate the ideas. The book lays out the format for working in small groups, explains how and why small groups are formed, the decisions that small groups have to make, problems that small groups face, and principles of how a group can work together to complete their project and make a presentation. Terms are defined in easy-to-understand language and examples are relevant and applicable. The book is fairly easy to read and unlike most textbooks I have forced myself to read, I actually enjoyed reading COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS. I would recommend this text for any small group communication class or anyone interested in the field of small group communication.

Editorial Review:

This text offers a brief, step-by-step introduction to the theory and practice of small group communication. Teaching students to develop and apply their critical thinking skills in group problem solving makes this text a helpful tool for instructors.

uhhhh, no! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The above description is just flat wrong. Probably for another book. Look inside the cover and you will see the book is a collection of social psychological and sociological essays by the likes of Mead, Cooley, and Goffman.

Editorial Review:

"The essays are engaging and the stories the authors tell are delightful. I especially like the illustrations of what is 'real' and what is 'not real.' Convincing college students that reality is socially constructed is no easy task, and stories that the students can 'get' help enormously. I plan to continue to use this exciting and insightful text."

- Barbara Trepagnier, University of Texas

"I was initially attracted to this book because it was organized in exactly the way I had been organizing my course in social psychology - to find it all in one book was great. The section on theory is among the best I've seen; additionally, students really LIKE this book, and if they like it, they read it. My thanks go out to O'Brien and Kollock for their writing of a book that fills what was a huge gap in the social psychological textbook market."

- Rebecca J. Erickson, University of Akron

Intended for the introductory communication concepts course (versus the performance-oriented hybrid course), Human Communication: Principles and Contexts focuses on the principles of speech communication and its contexts. The award-winning authors, an academic and a professional writer, write engagingly, strive to link theory and research with fundamental concepts, and to enliven the exposition with intriguing case studies, useful interpersonal skills and stimulating examples. Tubbs and Moss show a true understanding and sensitivity to diversity, a reflection of their professional interests in gender and cultural issues. Stewart Tubbs is the Darrell S. Cooper Professor of Leadership in the School of Business at Eastern Michigan University. Sylvia Moss received the Whiting Writer's Award for her poetry and has twice been a Yaddo Fellow.

The Evolution of Cooperation: A Review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In his phenomenal book The Evolution of Cooperation, Robert Axelrod explains the logic behind game theory's most influential model- the Prisoner's Dilemma- in a way that even the nontechnical reader can understand. Backing up traditional findings with advanced computer tests, Axelrod relates the Prisoner's Dilemma to evolutionary biology, the live-let-live system of trench warfare during World War I, and family relationships.

After laying out the premises behind the Prisoner's Dilemma, explaining how the model works, and taking the reader through numerous easy to understand real life examples, Axelrod offers the reader advice on how to make decisions efficiently and how to promote cooperation. This is a must read for anyone entering the Political Science field, or people who are just interested in how cooperation can exist in situations in which there is no central authority. The Evolution of Cooperation truly, and simply, answers the question, "Under what conditions will cooperation emerge in a world of egoists without central authority?"

Editorial Review:

This widely praised and much-discussed book explores how cooperation can emerge in a world of self-seeking egoists—whether superpowers, businesses, or individuals—when there is no central authority to police their actions.

Editorial Review:

For use in Media and Society courses offered in Sociology or Communication/ Journalism Schools and Departments. Also for use in American Society courses and/or Introduction to Mass Communication courses. *Focuses on the big picture, examining relationships between the various components of the media process. The emphasis is on understanding the mass media, in all their complexity, in social terms. *Emphasizes an integrated approach to studying mass media of all types. The authors explore both different dimensions of the media process (production, content and audiences) and the different types of media (film, music, news, television, books, the Internet). *Demonstrates how social, economic and political forces have shaped the development and approach of technology. What is New to this Second Edition? *New lists of Internet resources added in the text and appendix. *Presentation of media ownership patterns is updated. Authors show who owns what and explore the social significance of these recent developments. *Extensive coverage on the new regulations of the Telecommunication Act of 1966 and their significance for media owners and media audiences. “Croteau and Hoynes have written the clearest, most comprehensive, and useful textbook I’ve seen on the media, American society, and their interconnections. As sage as it is thoroughgoing, it serves as an encyclopedic reference book as well as a cogent summation of what scholars know. My congratulations to the authors.” --Todd Gitlin, author of the The Twilight of Common Dreams, The Sixties, and Inside Prime Time, and Professor of Culture, Journalism and Sociology at New York University “The content of this book is exactly what the more medium-centric mass media books do not address - the interaction of the media industry and society.” --Kent Kedl, School of Journalism and Communication, University of Minnesota “I have been dissatisfied with the primary texts available for my Culture and Mass Media course because none help my students think critically about the subject. I am thrilled to learn that Croteau and Hoynes’ text elaborates the type of framework that I had attempted to develop in previous classes...The emphasis upon multiple arenas of analysis, social relations, and concern with examining both agency and constraint...make this book a ‘best fit’ for the course.” --Jane Duvall Downing, University of Missouri-Columbia “At last I’ve found a textbook I’m happy to use in my undergraduate course on the sociology of media. Media / Society does a great job of presenting the theories and information I want my students to learn, and it’s well written, too.” --Gaye Tuchman, Sociology Department, University of Connecticut “The most comprehensive and insightful book on the role of media in life and society. If students, scholars, and all those concerned about our culture had to pick one book to enlighten and inform them, this would be the book.” --George Gerbner, Dean Emeritus, The Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania
