Investigating Communication Offers Excellent Overview 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I highly recommend this book to those seeking an introduction to communication research methods. This book is creative and well organized. Concepts are explicated with "real studies" and the concepts' definitions are clearly conveyed. The numerous examples highlight the breadth and depth of research in the field of communication studies while helping the reader to answer the "so what" questions about research methods. I enjoy using this book with my undergraduate research methods classes and my students speak favorably about their experience using it.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a comprehensive, balanced introduction to communication research methods. Designed for readers who have little or no familiarity with research methods, this book helps one become a more knowledgeable and competent consumer (and limited producer) of scholarly research and of the everyday research to which they are exposed by the mass media. Praised for its accessible writing and extensive real-life examples, this book takes a step-by-step approach through the communication research process. Investigating Communication shows how communication research is conducted from start to finish, with the book's organization modeled after a traditional research study. By making the material accessible rather than impossible to learn, readers become excited about studying research methods. For anyone interested in the introductory methods of communication research.

Great Resource for Those Who Want A Different Type of Vacation 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

*****
I bought this book out of curiosity and was amazed at the variety of opportunities available to travel and contribute throughout the world. The book is a compendium of opportunities of every imaginable type, an incredible resource if you're even thinking about a taking a vacation in which you volunteer.

Each opportunity contains all contact information, include web site, the types of projects available, organization mission statements, the year founded, the number of volunteers last year (so that you can see the scope of the program), funding sources, what kind of work the organization does, project locations, time line (when and for how long commitments are made), cost (including arrangements that must be made like medical examinations), how to get started, needed skills, and the specific populations that could qualify.

The book is very friendly to those with limitations (for example, sight limitations, physical agility, etc.). There are also stories throughout the book from volunteers about their actual experiences while volunteering.

There is a section on long-term volunteering opportunities. There are four indexes: by project cost, project length, location, season, and type.

It is a wonderful book to use to explore what types of things you might like to do, as well as to use as a research base to search out specific opportunities. It is a great value, and an organized way to begin your volunteer journey!

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

A volunteer experience is the best way to travel, combine personal growth and philanthropy, and get to know other cultures and people by helping them. The seventh edition of this classic adventure travel guide lists more than 2,000 projects worldwide that need volunteers. Detailed organization profiles provide contact information, project locations and objectives, costs, dates, and application instructions. Cross-referenced indexes help travelers plan according to cost, destination, length of vacation, season, and type of project. Vignettes from volunteers describe the type of work that was done, the people met, and lessons learned.

Interesting Books That I have Read 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Heads up to anyone that is about to read/purchase this book! I previously read Reymundo Sanchez previous book about his life as a Latin King, and though I did not believe all which he had written; I did consider it an interesting book. Unfortunately, in this current book, if you read VERY carefully, Sanchez states that this is not an autobiographical memoir, but rather a true-life story about the LIVES OF A FEW Latin King members made into the fictional life of ONE PERSON!!!! Therefore, like I had previously thought, this book is not at all true! Sanchez is a good writer and he must be given credit for that. But, he shouldn't have written this story as his own true-to-life events, when in fact it was based on happenings that occurred to a few of friends. Sanchez converts all of this information into one fictional person for his book, wants us to believe this his his true-life sob story!

Editorial Review:

Once a King, Always a King is the sequel to his memoir, My Bloody Life, and recounts the former gang member's struggle to create a normal life.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1956, The Power Elite stands as a contemporary classic of social science and social criticism. C. Wright Mills examines and critiques the organization of power in the United States, calling attention to three firmly interlocked prongs of power: the military, corporate, and political elite. The Power Elite can be read as a good account of what was taking place in America at the time it was written, but its underlying question of whether America is as democratic in practice as it is in theory continues to matter very much today.

What The Power Elite informed readers of in 1956 was how much the organization of power in America had changed during their lifetimes, and Alan Wolfe's astute afterword to this new edition brings us up to date, illustrating how much more has changed since then. Wolfe sorts out what is helpful in Mills book and which of his predictions have not come to bear, laying out the radical changes in American capitalism, from intense global competition and the collapse of communism to rapid technological transformations and ever changing consumer tastes. The Power Elite has stimulated generations of readers to think about the kind of society they have and the kind of society they might want, and deserves to be read by every new generation.

Editorial Review:

We are all fascinated by them--that enigmatic class of people often referred to as the rich. With all the emphasis on the rich and famous in America, we would think we know everything about them. In reality, very few of us truly understand those who make up the very wealthiest Americans--those with liquid assets of $5 million or more. What is this new class of people and how did they get that way?

In The New Elite, the authors reveal what motivates our country's most powerful and influential class, what they want, where they shop, and how they really spend their money. With candor and unique insight, they reveal that the people who drive our economy are not Ivy league- educated, luxury-seeking socialites. While they include luminaries like Bill Gates, David Geffen, Ralph Lauren, and Donald Trump, they also include the small business owner next door. Based on unprecedented research with hundreds of interviews with members of this unique group,The New Elite uncovers the five classes of America's newly wealthy--including those who struggle with its implications, those who refuse to let it change them, and those who give it away, and how each of them is changing our culture and economy. This is an entertaining and enlightening look at America's ruling class, the profound ways they have redefined what it means to be rich, and how we court them.

A Communication Giant Shares His Speaking Strategies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Every time I direct a Presentation Skills seminar or provide communication coaching for executives, I recommend this book. I'll explain why.

Roger Ailes has strong credentials for writing a book about giving speeches. Prior to launching Fox News just over a decade ago, he had served as a speech writer and coach for the first President Bush, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani, and other public figures. Next, he became a talent scout for TV stations, helping them find anchors who could boost ratings.

I recommend You Are the Message for several reasons. First, the author's credentials I cited. Second, the book's straightforward approach, with clear, simple language.Third, Ailes gives readers a number of gems like these to keep in mind as they prepare speeches:

On being yourself: "You don't have to assume a phony posture. You just have to be you at your best. You already have the magic of communication in you, because nobody can play you as well as you can."

On composure: "If you are uncomfortable with who you are,it will make others uncomfortable too."

On style: "The best communicators I've ever known never changed their style of delivery from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're delivering a speech, having an intimate conversation, or being interviewed on a TV talk show."

On choosing your topic: "If you care, they care."

On energy: "I can correct fifteen communication problems with one ounce of energy."

On enthusiasm: "If the audience knows you care about what you're doing, you can forget about most speaking techniques."

If you're going to buy one book about preparing and delivering speeches, I recommend You Are the Message.

The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

Editorial Review:

"You are the message." What does that mean, exactly? It means that when you communicate with someone, it's not just the words you choose to send to the other person that make up the message. You're also sending signals about what kind of person you are--by your eyes, your facial expression, your body movement, your vocal pitch, tone, volume, and intensity, your commitment to your message, your sense of humor, and many other factors.

The receiving person is bombarded with symbols and signals from you. Everything you do in relation to other people causes them to make judgments about what you stand for and what your message is. "You are the message" comes down to the fact that unless you identify yourself as a walking, talking message, you miss that critical point.

The words themselves are meaningless unless the rest of you is in synchronization. The total you affects how others think of and respond to you.

Inside the heart of a big yawn, more like 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Many of the previous reviews have pointed out Mr Feller's haughty condescension but what really makes his book a drag is how breathtakingly boring it is. Naked with other men in a hot spring bath? Good gracious me! As another reviewer pointed out, anybody who comes to Japan will experience virtually everything in this book in the first week; what that other reviewer failed to mention is that nobody else will decide to write a tedious book about it all. Filled with shallow 'insights' and yawn-inducing 'adventures', Feller's book is a soporific account of a dull year as lived by a dull individual who managed, somehow, to con a publisher into releasing this dull book. The fact that it's still in print boggles the mind.

If you're interested in a good read on Japan look for either of Alan Booth's books (Looking For The Lost & The Roads To Sata), John Morley's Pictures From The Water Trade, Will Ferguson's Hokkaido Highway Blues, or anything by Lafcadio Hearn. All of those authors deliver. Mr Feller's book might be useful for chronic insomniacs but everybody else should steer well clear.

Editorial Review:

Learning to Bow has been heralded as one of the funniest, liveliest, and most insightful books ever written about the clash of cultures between America and Japan. With warmth and candor, Bruce Feiler recounts the year he spent as a teacher in a small rural town. Beginning with a ritual outdoor bath and culminating in an all-night trek to the top of Mt. Fuji, Feiler teaches his students about American culture, while they teach him everything from how to properly address an envelope to how to date a Japanese girl.

Editorial Review:

From Rush Limbaugh to Howard Stern, America tunes in to its radio hosts both on the air and between covers, accepting them as truth-tellers without agendas, the perfect gadflies for the age of too much information. In an era where everyone seems bought and paid for, they cut through it all to tell it like it is. For Fall 2000--just in time to enter the fray for the presidential election season-St. Martin's is happy to present the most unfettered voice of all, Larry Elder.

Larry Elder has been igniting passions and conversations for five years at the top of the competitive drive-time radio heap, KABC in Los Angeles-the "Sage from South Central" punctures pretensions, refuses to accept the accepted wisdom, and puts everyone on notice that the status quo needs to be shaken up. From his outrage over the entrenched "victicrat" society and how it keeps believers spinning their wheels, to his trenchant observations on work, leadership, race, special interests, politics and more, Larry is a clarion voice that cuts through what the usual suspects say and hear.

"Bad schools, crime, drugs, high taxes, the social security mess, racism, the health care crisis, unemployment, welfare state dependency, illegitimacy. What do these issues have in common? Politicians, the media and our so-called leaders lie to us about them. They lie about the cause. They lie about the effect. They lie about the solutions." -- Larry Elder

If you're going to buy one book on Non-Verbal Communication... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I've recently become fascinated with the subject of non-verbal communication -- both as a scientific/psychological/anthropological discipline, and as a way to improve real life communication skills -- and I can honestly say whether your interest in 'body language' is scientific or practical, buy this book. I've bought many, many books on the subject and even purchased a home-study course on body language, and in my opinion this is the most comprehensive single volume on non-verbal communication available. The knowledge within this book is easy to practically apply and scientifically sound.

Other great books on the subject include:
Fundamentals of Non-Verbal Behavior (Ed. Feldman and Rime)
Unmasking the Face (Paul Ekman -- featured in 'Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction)
The Hidden Dimension (Hall)
The Silent Language (Hall)

The application of reading body language in photographs found in Kevin Hogan's Body Language course ([...]) is really valuable as well, and his practical suggestions for improving one's own communication are a smart distillation of what could easily have become a cumbersome amount of information in this area, but for detailed and thorough scientific work in the study and application of Body Language, start with Mark Knapp! Highly Recommended!!!

Editorial Review:

This introductory text is designed for courses in nonverbal communication. Using the cross disciplinary approaches of speech and social psychology, Knapp and Hall center on how nonverbal communication research affects a wide variety of academic interests. It is the most comprehensive, most readable compendium of research and theory on nonverbal communication available. It is the standard reference in this area.
