If you are interested in children's films, you must read! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are an educator, at any level, or just have an interest in children's film in general, you must read this book. It is a very concise overview of the theory behind most of the important periods of critical theory. As the genre of theory changes, at times slowly, at times with a rapid pace, this book explains what you need to know. Excellent reading material for anyone with an interest in film.

A Gem for the classroom 5 out of 5 stars.

I am an educator and have included this book when I do a film segment as part of my English class. It is fast paced with information that I have shared with my students who are fascinated by the elements and history of film.

Editorial Review:

This study examines children's films from various critical perspectives, including those provided by classical and current film theory.

This book has blessed me beyond measure. It gives inspired and scriptual answers to questions young people have and motivation to live life God's way. The section titles are: God's purpose for the youth, conflict with sin, gaining victories, walking in the light, preparation for life work, service, health and efficiency, devotional life, stewardship, home life, dress and adornment, social relations, courtship and marriage. It is an awsome book that has caused me to sqirm in my seat with conviction, but then move on and overcome. Please buy this one for sure.

One of the best books on teens 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Karen Sternheimer has followed up her excellent "It's Not the Media" with another highly readable, incisive work that demolishes the rampant myths about teens today. In a time of terrible, misleading, distortion-packed anti-youth books flooding bookshelves, Sternheimer consistently uses logical analysis and vivid examples that treat teenagers not as some alien scourge, but with the respect and fairness that we would expect for our own adult groups in society. As a former teacher, I recommend this book not just for good reading and information, but as a scholarly text in courses on youth, sociology, psychology, media analysis, critical thinking, and related fields.

Editorial Review:

This book focuses on early childhood to late teen issues like kidnapping and child safety, childhood obesity, school safety and zero tolerance policies, teen drivers, hazing, bullying and risk-taking behavior. Fear of and fear for youth is a rite of passage, a common lament that comes with change. Young people both represent and must deal with the consequences of these fluctuations, and are actually often better behaved than their predecessors.

The developing creating child 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Piaget provides a developmental model of human intelligence. He outlines distinct stages beginning with the sensory- motor stage and shows how in each stages the child integrates what has been previously learned in order to expand and develop his powers. Instead of focusing on 'inherent and deterministic drives, or on archetypal eternal patterns, he focuses on capabilities which emerge through interaction between the changing inner world of the child and the world he meets. Piaget puts emphasis on Mankind as a 'creating and constructing creature'.
His writing is complex and often abstract and difficult. But his ideas have been basic to the whole study of child development.

Editorial Review:

Jean Piaget was one of the most salient and inspirational figures in psychological and educational research this century. He was prolific, authoring or editing over eighty books and numerous journal papers which have spawned a huge and fertile continuation of his research over the decades. A major component of any course on children's psychological development and a research tradition that is expanding, scholars need access to the original texts rather than relying on secondhand accounts. Jean Piaget: Selected Works is a chance to acquire key original texts, most of which have been previously unavailable for several years.

Editorial Review:

This book is unique in exploring the process of conducting short-term intensive group play therapy and the subsequent results. It focuses on play therapy with special populations of aggressive acting-out children, autistic children, chronically ill children, traumatized children, selective mute children, disassociative identity disorder adults with child alters, and the elderly.

The book addresses such vital issues as how play therapy helps children, confidentiality in working with children, how to work with parents, and what the play therapist needs to know about medications for children. The difficult dimension of diagnosis is clarified through specific descriptions of how the play therapist can use play behaviors to diagnose physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional maladjustment in children.

For anyone studying adolescents, stay clear of this book 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is grossly misinformed. Wooden makes no attempt to study his subject. Rather, he regurgitates things read from letters and pamphlets. He describes one stereotype after another and makes very broad generalizations that would get a professional in trouble. In particular, his chapters on Satanism and the Punk movement sound just like a Donahue episode. He never even speaks to a punk. Instead, in his chapter on Punks, he reads letters from parents and others who have been affected in some way by Punk, obviously biasing the research. That is only one chapter I could pick apart. In conclusion, Wooden is very out of touch with the real issues being presented. I am very angry I bought this book and am surprised he was even published. The fact that he is an award-winning author makes me want to become a writer.

Editorial Review:

Offering a unique look at subcategories of delinquent youth, primarily suburban youth, Wooden/Blazak use qualitative research strategies to explore how basically good kids can move from the fringes of society to delinquent activities. Accordingly, this text investigates everything from the harmless life of the mall rat to the volatile and dangerous world of skinheads, Satanists, and tagger crews, as well as the culture in the California Youth Authority. This new edition includes more information about girls and different races, as well as the latest information about group typologies. The author quotes from the popular media to highlight his points and make conceptual material relevant to students.

Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It is well-written and interesting. Most of the chapters are short and informative.

Editorial Review:

In this engaging anthology, each chapter presents an article that focuses on a different child development issue. Using the cross-cultural approach, this reader explores child development in many cultures and offers aspects of early childhood through adolescent development. The articles themselves are the focus, unlike many readers which use quotations from articles with editorial narrative to explain the material to the student. Each article offers a theory or application about child development.

Editorial Review:

"Recommended for anyone who works with inner-city youth."
Library Journal

"This exceptionally important book will set the standard for powerful writing about urban teenagers for years to come. Privileging the voices of inner-city teens and presenting their experiences of themselves and their worlds, Niobe Way's intelligent, subtle voice leads us to listen freshly to this group whose views are so often not heard or are distorted. She presents a brilliant example of voice-centered research and essential reading for anyone hoping to work effectively with adolescents."
--Carol Gilligan, Author of In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development

What does it mean to be a teenager in an American city at the close of the twentieth century? How do urban surroundings affect the ways in which teens grow up, and what do their stories tell us about human development? In particular, how do the negative images of themselves on television and in the newspaper affect their perspectives about themselves? Psychologists typically have shown little interest in urban youth, preferring instead to generalize about adolescent development from studies of their middle-class, suburban counterparts. In Everyday Courage Niobe Way, a developmental psychologist, looks beyond the stereotypes to reveal how the personal worldviews of inner-city poor and working-class adolescents develop over time. In the process, she challenges much conventional wisdom about inner-city youth and about adolescents more generally.

She introduces us to Malcolm, a sensitive and proud young man full of contradictions. We follow him as he makes the honor roll, becomes a teenage father, and falls into depression as his younger sister is dying of cancer. We meet Eva, an intelligent and confident young women full of questions, who grows increasingly alienated from her mother and comes to rely on her best friends for support. We watch her blossom as a ball player and a poet. We share her triumph when she receives a scholarship to the college of her choice.

In these 24 adolescents, Way finds a cross-section of youngsters who want to make positive changes in their lives and communities while struggling with concerns about betrayal, trust, racism, violence, and death. Each adolescent wants most of all to "be somebody," to have her or his voice heard.
