Thomas' book is well organized but the content fails to be true to original theories. Also, his biases are clear in many of his explanations.

Editorial Review:

Explaining the nature of theories in the field of child development (including why theories are useful and why there are multiple theories), Thomas' highly respected book covers the widest range of theories of any text currently available. Using the following criteria: "Has the theory been popular?," "Has the theory been influential?," and "Is the theory representative of a class or family of theories?," Thomas identifies the goals and describes the findings of more than two dozen theorists and inspects a series of child development issues that bridge a variety of theories. Additionally, Thomas suggests a variety of ways to compare theories and existing explanations of how a child develops.

The events in The Assassins of Rome follow about a month after the events in The Pirates of Pompeii, and is the fourth in Lawrence's Roman Mysteries Series. Here we rejoin Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan, and Lupus just as they return home to Ostia. As with the previous books, this volume is set in the first century, 79 A.D. As we start out here, the group has joined together to celebrate Jonathan's 11th birthday...and as usual, something bad always happens on his birthday....he breaks a an expensive perfume bar, royal guards show up at his house, and much more. The net result is that Jonathan turns up missing and the others find themselves desperate to solve the mystery of where he has gone.

The Assassins of Rome differs slightly in form from the previous books in the series because it is told from two different perspectives, and alternates between the two. The first perspective is that of Flavia (and her group, consisting of Falvia, Nubia, Aristo and Lupus) and the second perspective is that of Jonathan and his uncle as they travel to Rome looking for his mother. This makes the story a bit more exciting and confusing that previous books...but it's welcome deviation from the regular formula and helps keep the action going, I don't think it would have been as enjoyable if there were big breaks while a narrator explained what was going on. This device made it easy for the story to remain fast paced and exciting.

As with previous books, the author tackles the ins and outs of daily life in 78 A.D., as such we get a look at various people's perceptions on slavery (including the slaves), life in the royal city, various opinions on the Emperor (and his predecessors), and this book takes a more in depth look at the fall of Jerusalem, which as a theme introduced in The Pirates of Pompeii.
Lawrence's series is an excellent glimpse into the daily life of the Roman people.

Overall, this was a highly enjoyable mystery/thriller/adventure book for young readers that is heavy on the details of Roman daily life and is highly descriptive with likable and believable characters (for the most part). Previously, what I felt that there was a bit of a heavy handed Christian message to the series, however it's much more subtle in this book and is more welcome...woven into the story with more skill. I give it four stars, The Pirates of Pompeii strength is in details and overall, it is a light and entertaining read.

Editorial Review:

Jonathan disappears and his three friends trace him to the Golden House of the Emperor Nero in Rome, where they face a deadly assassin. This is the darkest mystery yet as they learn what happened to Jonathan's family in Jerusalem.

Editorial Review:

A pioneering casebook, "Child, Family, and State" was one of the first books to explore the full range of legal questions relating to children - not just custody issues, but also the economic relationship within a family, abuse and neglect, medical treatment, state-enforced limitations on liberty, and juvenile delinquency. Meticulously revised from cover to cover, this Fifth Edition serves as the foundation of an enlightening course. Longtime users will recognize these popular features: provides readable, thought provoking, and comprehensive coverage of both children's rights and the juvenile court system; includes social and historical perspectives; uses down-to-earth hypotheticals to illustrate issues clearly; facilitates classroom discussion through stimulating questions in every chapter; and designed for maximum flexibility in sequencing the material. The Fifth Edition presents new material on a wide range of issues: protection of children from pornography on the Internet (Ashcroft v. ACLU); software filtering in public libraries (United States v. American Library Association); regulation of sexually explicit and violent materials in movies, music, and video games; sex offender registration; juvenile confession (Yarborough v. Alvarado); juvenile death penalty (Roper v. Simmons); fetal homicide victims (Unborn Victims of Violence Act); child abuse implications of Crawford v. Washington; custody implications of Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow; custody relocation controversies; custody/adoption aspects of same-sex marriage; adolescent health risks; partial birth abortion ban and minors' abortion rights; minors' First and Fourth Amendment rights; school vouchers; and curfew violations.

Editorial Review:

Jean Piaget was one of the most salient and inspirational figures in psychological and educational research this century. He was prolific, authoring or editing over eighty books and numerous journal papers which have spawned a huge and fertile continuation of his research over the decades. A major component of any course on children's psychological development and a research tradition that is expanding, scholars need access to the original texts rather than relying on secondhand accounts. Jean Piaget: Selected Works is a chance to acquire key original texts, most of which have been previously unavailable for several years.

Well worth the wait! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you haven't yet discovered Caroline Lawrence's Roman Mysteries, you are missing one of the best series available in the world of children's historical fiction. We've been fans since the very first book and so are delighted to see that Amazon has finally made arrangements to drag these across the pond rather than wait for a year or more for US publication, something our young Latinists have found very frustrating.

Slave Girl from Jerusalem (Roman Mysteries) brings together the workings of the Roman legal system and the destruction of Jerusalem's Second Temple in a tight little mystery with lots of accurate historical context.

Those studying Ancient Rome or Latin should also note that all of the Roman Mysteries contain an extensive vocabulary list in the back as well as an end note regarding the history behind the book.

Kudos to Caroline! Now, when are we going to see the TV series over here?

Editorial Review:

This exciting adventure recreates the siege of Masada, and reveals important developments in Jonathan's struggle with his guilt over past events. Also, there's terrific insight into the workings of the Roman legal system in a page-turning court room drama. As ever, Caroline Lawrence spings new surprises for all the characters and provides motives, means and opportunities for one determined felon. And, as ever, it's up to the four young detectives to crack the case.

Read with a grain of sand.... 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I am very familiar with the courts in Santa Clara County (CA), having myself been caught up in a nasty custody battle (and other attendant battles) for 18 years.

I am also familiar with the work of Judge Stewart, (having sat in on many of his sessions) and the work of Terry Johnston (personal experience). Below is my opinion garnered by my own personal, and extensive, experience in the very court system the two authors have 'served'.

I am not impressed. Let me put it this way, I retained sole custody of my daughter IN SPITE OF Ms. Johnston (who was directly involved in my case), her special Masters Program and other agenda's that are at work in this County Court system.

Fortunately for me, I had a good judge who was able to see past the prejudicial treatment of my case. Not so fortunate for others. I had some excellent representation for about one year of my on going battles, for the other 17 I largely represented myself, so trust me, I understand what goes on. Single mom, low income, victim of domestic violence (25 police documented incidents), vs. ex police officer husband, (remarried with 8 kids and enough money to hire many lawyers). If Dr. Johnston had had her way, my daughter would have eventually wound up in the custody of my violent ex. I fought against some of the best attorneys in the county, and I prevailed.

You can too. Read the book, but if something doesn't quite feel right, follow that intuition. If you need to know more, check out the National Coalition for Justice. They have some very good information re: The Authors of this book. I never joined this organization, so I have no particular agenda re: their organization, therefore I can objectively reccommend this as a good and reliable source.

Editorial Review:

This book fully, clearly, and concisely explains the process of court child custody litigation. It shows how custody decisions are made, what can be expected at each stage of the process, and how parents can insure that their abilities are clearly presented to persons with influence over the custody decision. It is intended to eliminate surprises that could lead to costly mistakes along the way.

Parents who settle custody disputes out of court will not only save tens of thousands of dollars, but will have avoided the rancor and hostility of a custody trial that makes future cooperation in raising the children almost impossible.

With help from a capable and experienced attorney, this book will allow the reader to present her/his case for custody in its best possible light. A must-read for divorcing parents, custody evaluators, family psychologists, and marriage and family therapists.

Read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This chronicle of the author's experiences as a Guardian Ad Litem in Florida will alternately enlighten you, frustrate you, inspire you, and make you angry. Much, I would expect, like being a Guardian. Besides giving others a blueprint on "how to help," and serving as an education on some of society's problems that most people wish they could ignore, this book is great reading, chock full of emotionally-involving, often heart-rending stories. Prepare to be engrossed.

A look into the life 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked up the book by Gay Courter and could not put it down. Inspiring! I can't say enough about it!

This book changed my life. 5 out of 5 stars.

As a freshman in college, I stumbled upon this book in the library, and soon after dedicated myself to improving the child welfare system. Courter's account is incredibly inspiring, emphasizing the responsibility we all have to speak up for kids who have been wronged by our systems. I have now been a court appointed special advocate myself, and it is the most heartbreaking (but rewarding!) volunteer experience of my life.

If you're looking for a book that will be difficult to put down, and stories of kids who are difficult to turn your back on, then this book is for you.

Editorial Review:

This is the true story of Gay Courter's work as a Guardian of the legal powers, responsibilities, and duties her position entailed, of her fierce efforts to ensure that her clients were treated with care and respect, and of the rewards of participating in thie nationwide volunteer program. This book is for anyone who has ever wondered, "What can I do to help?"

Editorial Review:

All across America, angry fathers are demanding rights. These men claim that since the breakdown of their own families, they have been deprived of access to their children. Joining together to form fathers' rights groups, the mostly white, middle-class men meet in small venues to speak their minds about the state of the American family and, more specifically, to talk about the problems they personally face, for which they blame current child support and child custody policies. Dissatisfied with these systems, fathers' rights groups advocate on behalf of legal reforms that will lower their child support payments and help them obtain automatic joint custody of their children.

In Defiant Dads, Jocelyn Elise Crowley offers a superbly balanced examination of these groups in order to understand why they object to the current child support and child custody systems; what their political agenda, if enacted, would mean for their members' children or children's mothers; and how well they deal with their members' interpersonal issues concerning their ex-partners and their role as parents. Based on interviews with more than 150 fathers' rights group leaders and members, as well as close observation of group meetings and analysis of their rhetoric and advocacy literature, this important book is the first extensive, in-depth account of the emergence of fathers' rights groups in the United States. A nuanced and timely look at an emerging social movement, Defiant Dads is a revealing investigation into the changing dynamics of both the American family and gender relations in American society.

Every parent who thinks you're helping your child by introducing them to "reality" at 3 yoa NEEDS to read this 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's refreshing to hear someone finally espouse an idea that's been clear to me for a long time and that seems to have been completely lost in today's society:

Children need to be introduced APPROPRIATELY to "reality".

Does it make for easier parenting? Not by any stretch. It takes diligence and effort to make intelligent decisions about what to expose your child to.

The idiotic idea that it's somehow better for a 5 year old to "see how things really are" is borne of lazy parents, both intellectually and physically.

If you want easy, don't have kids.

Thank you to the Medveds for writing this book- I hope some of the people I see writing reviews here have the sense, for their children's sake, to heed some of the advice.

If your a good parent you know this, if your a bad parent you aren't reading this review 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was at best okay. I agree that it is important to allow children to grow up slowly and preserve their sense of wonder and awe. Most parents will do the best that they can. This book goes over the top with trying to scare you into implimenting its suggestions. I think any engage parent understands most of what this book has to offer(Unfortunately we live in a time where there are a lot of parents that don't engage their children) and deals with it as best they can. It's another call for no more television, blah, blah, blah. Again, I feel that good parents are doing the good things that this book has to offer and the bad parents probably aren't going to even pick up this book. Life goes on

Editorial Review:

Saving childhood focuses on how parents can protect the childhood of their children from a society that seems perversely determined to frighten and corrupt their young.
