Editorial Review:

There is a growing body of scientific knowledge regarding development during the middle years which has so far been relegated to discipline-specific texts and journals (e.g., clinical psychology and endocrinology).
Life in the Middle consolidates main findings across disciplines, with a life-span perspective regarding mid-life. Coverage includes individual development in middle age from the psychological and biological perspectives as well as the sociocultural context in which middle-aged individuals live and work, including physical health in mid-life, psychological well-being, cognitive development, the impact of work on the individual, and the general development of the "self." This age period is increasingly becoming the focus of scholarly attention as the largest cohort in U.S. history are now moving into the middle years (e.g., the "babyboomers"). From 1990 to 2015 the number of middle-aged people will increase 72 percent from 47 to 80 million.

Key Features
* Contributors are outstanding scholars in the field of adult development
* Addresses critical theoretical issues in midlife
* Includes important contributions to our understanding of physical health at midlife
* Presents a thorough review of women's health at midlife
* Takes a holistic approach to biopsychosocial functioning at midlife

Editorial Review:

Theodore Roszak, the author of the international bestseller The Making of a Counter Culture, returns to investigate the baby boom generation as it prepares to join the ranks of our society's rapidly growing senior population. America the Wise will ignite a nationwide debate that promises to transform our most fundamental ethical and cultural values as well as our economic and political priorities. Roszak argues that the emergence of senior dominance (in numbers, wealth, and political power) will force Americans to rethink their basic attitudes toward death and dying, competition and compassion, wealth and well-being. He mounts a compelling defense of senior entitlements and envisions a society in which the ability to prolong productive and fulfilling lives is regarded as a paramount historic achievement rather than an inconvenient fiscal problem.

America the Wise provides an insightful look at the changes that await America in every walk of life, from the mass media and business to family life, from our obsession with the cult of youth and consumer culture to sexual and gender relations. Roszak calls upon the newly emerging ranks of our senior population to establish a society based not on the survival of the fittest but on wisdom, compassion, and the survival of the gentlest.

Fix a cup of tea and curl up in your favorite chair for wonderful reading. I can not imagine that anyone would not find this book to be of value. It will change your whole outlook on your adult family relationships. It is especially appropriate for this time of year and the preparation for holiday visits. Yet, the book has sound advice and practical suggestions that we can use at any time.

It is easy to read with beautiful illistrations and examples. Most of all, it includes thought provoking questions that encourages each of us to consider the messages in the book in the context of our individual family situations.

This will be a book that you want to give to others. And one I would want my own children to have when they become adults.

This is THE book for every woman and every man who loves her 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Over the past 10 years when I have been out giving seminars on menopause and osteoporosis, and now on estrogen, women and men would come forward to ask me about the subjects they still perceive to be "taboo." Subjects came up about lack of libido, erectile dysfunction, sexual boredom in a long term relationship, masturbation, extra marital affairs, safe sex, safer sex, no sex----I could go on and on. And so in addition to the 35,000 questionnaires I had already used for my books on menopause and osteoporosis, I distributed another 6700 questionnaires about our midlife sex lives.

The responses were illuminating, astounding, helpful. My responders were open, honest, and clear in their desire to improve their intimate relationships. I interviewed couples, singles, both gay and straight individuals. I interviewed women and men of many ages and in many stages of life.

Further, I ran focus groups in my home where the information flowed freely as each person present was aware that no one in that group would repeat anything heard there. Those interviewees, those present in the focus groups are represented throughout the book. They are real people, whose occupations and locales have been changed greatly in order to protect their privacy.

I am very proud of this book and have received letters, calls, and e-mails from women and men all over the world who felt they had found their way on the path to quality relationships after reading the book.

I hope "150 Most-Asked Questions About Midlife Sex, Love, and Intimacy"

will help you and make you happy, too.

Featuring the latest findings in endocrinology, urology, sexology, psychology, and alternative medicine, a warm and witty guide for the baby boomer generation provides answers to real-life concerns about intimacy in the middle years in a question-and-answer format. 25,000 first printing.
