College level geriatrics book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is simple to read and it covers all topics related with aging and geriatrics. I think this is a good source, but last semester I used one by John Cavanaugh and I considered that one a level higher than thisone. I mean this is a general topic book. I bouth it for my Social Work with the Elderly college class, and I don't really consider it too deep in the topic of social Work, but more a generalized information book.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling, multidisciplinary, social aging text presents positive images of aging while considering the many factors that contribute to how aging individuals experiences life. Up-to-date and expanded, this text offers a comprehensive view that presents aging positively, portraying concepts of active aging and resiliency, and defining "productive aging" by elaborating on the numerous ways elders contribute to society and their families. Based on the latest research findings, it offers greater depth to critical issues of aging, attending to differences by age and cohort, gender, ethnic minority status, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Editorial Review:

"25 exercises you need for wellness along with detailed intructions and photos."—Reader's Digest

Some people just assume that as they age, they will be less physically fit and may lose their independence—but that doesn't have to happen. The National Institute on Aging has brought together a team of experts to offer advice on staying healthy longer, with exercises tailored to be safe and effective for those over fifty. Fitness Over Fifty now includes a follow-along DVD to make this guide to getting started on an exercise program easier than ever before.

Studies show that, in the long term, older adults in all age groups hurt their health far more by not exercising than by exercising. As a rule, older people should stay as physically active as they can. The good news is that just about every older adult can safely do some form of physical activity at little or no cost. And they don't have to exercise in a public place or use expensive equipment.

Fitness Over Fifty, now with DVD, offers practical advice about the four areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. Fitness Over Fifty includes:
• ways to get—and stay—motivated
• advice on stretching and increasing flexibility
• daily, weekly, and monthly exercise and nutrition records and more
• 200 photos; DVD included.

Editorial Review:

Welcome to the world’s most unique and dynamic textbook on aging! Widely praised and adopted in previous editions, the Fifth Edition of Aging once again presents key issues in an engaging and accessible fashion. Organized unlike any other traditional textbook, author Harry R. Moody presents basic concepts followed by controversies, supported by carefully chosen adapted readings. The result is the most captivating introduction to gerontology available today.

Key Features:

  • Embraces current controversies in aging: The close link between concepts and controversies in the broad areas of aging including health care, socioeconomic trends, and the life course are examined. Aging of the U.S. population has huge consequences for everyone, not just the elderly. Students are encouraged to become involved in the major aging issues that we as a society are struggling with and to take an informed stand.
  • Incorporates a reorganized format: The former section, Basic Concepts III, on the life course perspective, will now be the first section in the book. The Focus on Practice boxes have been moved to the Basic Concepts sections to demonstrate their relevance. The Focus on the Future sections follow the readings, encouraging students to understand the rapid change in society, and its implications on the aging population.
  • Includes new material: Each of the Basic Concepts and the Controversies sections has been updated with new citations and updated discussions. Over twenty-five percent of the readings are new. In addition, all charts and graphs have been updated with the most recent U.S. census data.

Accompanied by High Quality Ancillaries!

  • Instructors Resource CD-ROM: Provides test questions, back issues of the Teaching Gerontology newsletter, and PowerPoint slides for each of the Basic Concepts and Controversies covered in the text.
  • Teaching Gerontology newsletter: Published monthly during the academic year through the AARP Office of Academic Affairs. This informative newsletter has, among other things, the latest information on relevant new research, websites, workshops and new publications to enhance teaching and learning in courses on aging. It is available free to all adopters of Aging, Fifth Edition.
  • Student Study Site: Contains an annotated list of online resources in aging to better help students develop research papers.  Check it out at http://www.sagepub.com/moody5study/

Review of Win Vista For Seniors 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I had used XP for Seniors by Addo Stuur and this book is almost a copy of that one. The only new items are the screen shots and the things only Vista has. Since I am quite familiar with Vista I did not find this book very helpful in learning Vista. However for a senior who had no prior knowledge of Vista or computers in general this book would probably be useful. I am a senior (80) and quite familiar with computers having used them since the late seventies. I was also one of the reviewers of the Beta copy of Vista and the pre-release copy of Vista so I am knowledgeable about this subject.

Editorial Review:

The ultimate starting point for senior citizens who want to learn how to use a PC, this reference guides users through the basics of the Windows Vista operating system. Seniors can work through the book at their own pace while sitting at the computer, learning how to write letters and memos, send and receive e-mail, explore the World Wide Web, and customize computer settings. The information is suitable for users with Windows Vista, Internet Explorer 7, and Outlook Express 7.

Editorial Review:

When author Andrew D. Blechman's next-door neighbors in a quaint New England town suddenly pick up and move to a gated retirement community in Florida he is bewildered by their decisions. A schoolteacher and his friendly, energetic wife, they were the perfect neighbors, and the kind of involved citizens the community could use more of, especially with a fight looming over plans to demolish a nearby park. But The Villages, the largest gated community in the world, had won them over. Their stories about "Florida's Friendliest Hometown" could hardly be believed. Larger than Manhattan, with a golf course for every day of the month, two downtowns, its own newspaper, radio, and TV stations, The Villages is a city of nearly one hundred thousand (and growing), missing only one thing: children.

More than twelve million Americans will soon live in such age-segregated communities. To get to the bottom of the trend, Blechman delves into life in the senior utopia and offers an entertaining first-hand report on all its peculiarities, from ersatz nostalgia and golf-cart mania, to manufactured history and the residents' surprisingly active sex life.

But Leisureville is more than just a romp in the retirement paradise. Blechman traces the history of this remarkable trend, travels to Arizona to show what has happened to the pioneers after decades of isolation, investigates the government of these instant cities, attends a builders conference, speaks with housing experts, and examines the implications of millions of Americans dropping out of society to live under legal segregation. A fascinating blend of serious history, social criticism, and engaging reportage, Leisureville is an important book on an underreported phenomenon that is growing larger every day.

But if you are not looking for advice on HRT... 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I hate to see this book represented by 1 reviewer giving it 1 star. I teach in a gerontology program and I found this book very useful in preparing my class on sexuality. The most important message I got from this book is that sex after 60 is normal and natural, but different from sex earlier in life. One point I did not see in my other reading--there is a discrepancy in the number of men and women that increases with age so that by age 85, there are 41 men for every 100 women. I have read many proposed solutions to this, all assuming that men have an innate lower life expectancy than do women. Dr. Bulter's approach is that men need to learn to take better care of their health so that they live longer. This was the most positive, pro-male solution I have read.

A Purpose-Filled Life 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

The book, Too Young to Retire, as well as the Stone's web site and book study groups, is their effort to teach people how to live a life filled with purpose, rather than the emptiness of so many retirees' lives.

The book begins with an introduction to the Stones and how they arrived at the attitude that they did. It then dives right into the largest problem that retirees face - money. If you ask most people approaching retirement age what they fear most about retirement, running out of money is tied with poor health. The Stones tackle the problem face on, correctly stating the "it is much less risky to worry about money than to face the volcanic changes of midlife and beyond." Once the discussion is concluded, they suggest several techniques to put money in its place, including the tried and true method of keeping a daily record of how you spend your money.

Not content with tackling retirement, the Stones next look at the world of work and why work isn't working. They cite many of the same ills that books such as Take Back Your Time discuss: too little vacation, too much pressure, too little fulfillment and more. The book quotes Rutgers University's Heldrich Center for Workforce Development study, "Most workers see their 'retirement' not as a time for leisure and travel, but as an opportunity to do fulfilling work, and find avocation in what they do." The end of the chapter offers methods to work through to who you really are. These are good starting places, but the more hard-core 9-5ers might need a little more work. The Stone's suggestion to hire a personal coach, even for a little while, is a good one.

The book is complete with pages and pages of resources. More can be found at their website.

If retirement is in your future, this book is a great place to begin the process.

Editorial Review:

With Americans living longer, healthier lives, the conventional idea of retirement is obsolete. Millions of Americans are working past the age of sixty-five—not because they have to, but because they want to. Many, like Marika and Howard Stone, discover second careers, start their own businesses, or go back to school.

Based on the popular website 2young2retire.com, Too Young to Retire offers inventive and exciting retirement alternatives to help readers find their labors of love, inner activists, or how to make a home away from home. Enlightening exercises and workbook pages as well as a comprehensive list of publications, home exchange organizations, and websites are included to assist readers in making meaningful choices. For those who aren’t ready to throw in the towel, Too Young to Retire is the essential resource for discovering what comes next.
