Editorial Review:

From Custer and Geronimo to John Wayne and the Marlboro Man, American notions of masculinity have been deeply interwoven with our ideas about the West. But there's more to the relationship between manhood and the frontier than a simple tale of cowboys and Indians, ruggedness and civilization. In Across the Great Divide, some of our leading historians look to both the history of masculinity in the West and to the ways that this experience has been represented in movies, popular music, dimestore novels, and folklore. Ramon Gutierrez (When Jesus Came, the Corn Mothers Went Away) describes the culture of machismo in early New Mexico; Susan Lee Johnson (Roaring Camp) takes on social life in Gold Rush boom towns; and other contributors introduce us to cross-dressing cowboys, cuckolded husbands hell-bent on revenge, and convicted outlaws walking to the gallows, among other characters. Intriguing, provocative, and important, Across the Great Divide makes us rethink easy assumptions about the nature of American masculinity.

Editorial Review:

The Unspoken-and Previously Unrecorded- Rules That Govern Men's Social Behavior Garland Green, Bill Meyers, and Dan Hartshorn Remember The Rules? Well, these ain't them. These are GuyRules, the unspoken-and until now unrecorded-rules that govern men's lives. For generations, men have jealously guarded these secrets, leaving women struggling to figure out what the heck was going on. Now the secret is out. GuyRules is based on a wildly popular Web site started two years ago by the authors, who contributed the first 110 rules. They then encouraged other guys to submit their own rules (provided they could pass a "Guy Test," included in the book), and things took off. The book is divided into chapters covering:* Buddies: "A Guy must compete for the biggest scar and most painful story. The Guy with the ugliest scar and the most grotesque story will win the Scar-Off Olympics."* Ego: "Guys are never lost and they never need a map. They've just chosen to take an alternate route at this particular juncture."* Hygiene: "One true measure of Guydom is how well a Guy can burp. Amongst Guys the belch is a true work of art. "While GuyRules is funny, it is also true. For the first time in history, guys from around the world explain in their own words why they do the things they do. Every true Guy who reads GuyRules will recognize himself immediately, and women will instantly recognize the Guys they love-and love to hate.

Mixed Bag of Essays 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Medieval Masculinities (Regarding Men in the Middle Ages), edited by Claire A. Lees, is, like many collections of essays by different scholars, something of mixed bag. The very broad topic makes this more evident than usual in this particular volume. The essays take the tools of feminist criticism and focus it instead on the men. It may be in literature, such as Beowulf, Castilian ballads or the fables of Marie de France, or in such topics as matrimony in medieval Italy. The essays vary in quality and the all suffer a little from taking a large topic and distilling it into a few pages which may leave a reader either confused or overwhelmed. Each of the scholars takes a different perspective on the topic as well with some essays seemingly barely related to the subject. Some of the pieces are of definate interest and this book, hopefully, will launch more fully developed research into this potentially important arena.

What a real Eunuch has to say. 1 out of 5 stars.
27 of 45 people found this review helpful.

I have not read this book but I am a real life Eunuch. I had my testicles surgically removed. In an Interview on Salon.com the author says "Castration does not get rid of the sexual drive, get rid of erections or any amount of sexual activity." WRONG!!! How would he know any way? He is NOT a Eunuch. He has had a vasectomy but that is totally different. I can speak from experience; when a man becomes a eunuch his sex drive drops to absolute zero. I had a very strong sex drive prior to castration but it is now completely gone. The only way for a Eunuch to regain his sex drive is to take some form of testosterone replacement. I have never heard of any real life Eunuch who was not on testosterone replacement therapy that had a sex drive. Don't waste your time on this book; the author obviously didn't do enough, if any research. If you want to learn about Eunuchs then search the web. There are a lot of us out there, and our numbers are growing.

Editorial Review:

Castration is a lively history of the meaning, function, and act of castration from its place in the early church to its secular reinvention in the Renaissance as a spiritualized form of masculinity in its 20th century position at the core of psychoanalysis.

Editorial Review:

The complex relationship between nationalism and masculinity has been explored both historically and sociologically with one consistent conclusion: male concepts of courage and virility are at the core of nationalism. In this ground-breaking book, the author questions this assumption and advances the debate through an empirical analysis of masculinity in the revealing contexts of same-sex (football and polo) and cross-sex (tango) relations. Because of its rich history, Argentina provides the ideal setting in which to study the intersection of masculine and national constructs: hybridization, creolization and a culture of performance have all informed both gender and national identities. Further, the author argues that, counter to claims made by globalization theorists, the importance of performance to Argentinian men and women has a long history and has powerfully shaped the national psyche.

But this book takes the analysis far beyond national boundaries to address general arguments in anthropology which are not culture-specific, and the discussion poses important comparative questions and addresses central theoretical issues, from the interplay of morality and ritual, to a comparison between the popular and the aristocratic, to the importance of 'othering' in national constructions - particularly those relating to sport.

This book represents a major contribution, not only to anthropology, but to the study of gender, nationalism and culture in its broadest sense.

Editorial Review:

Manliness has always been linked to physical prowess and to war; indeed the warrior has been the archetypal man across countless cultures throughout time. In this magisterial excursion through literature, history, warfare, and sociology, one of our most prominent scholars tracks the complex relationship between the changing methods and goals of warfare and shifting models of manhood. This journey takes us from the citizen soldiers of ancient Greece to the medieval knights to the misogynistic terrorists of Al Qaeda.

As he chronicles these transformations, Leo Braudy weighs the significance of everything from weapon technology to the hairstyles favored during different eras. He offers fresh insights on codes of war and codes of racial purity, and on cultural and historical figures from Socrates to Don Quixote to Napoleon to Custer to Rambo. Epic in scope and free of academic jargon, From Chivalry to Terrorism is a masterwork of scholarship that is both accessible and breathtakingly ambitious.

Editorial Review:

The relation between feminism and men is often presumed to be antagonistic, so that men are expected to resist feminism, and feminists are assumed to hate men. That pattern of opposition is disrupted, however, by the continually increasing numbers of men who are participating in feminist theory and practice, trying to integrate feminist perspectives into their scholarship, teaching, work, play, friendships, and romantic involvements. Responses to this male feminism have varied. Sometimes male feminists find some female feminists critical of men who oppose or decline to join feminist projects, but also rebuff the few men who do undertake feminist projects. On the other hand, some women feminists have unequivocally welcomed men as allies in political, business, religious, and academic contexts. The essays in Men Doing Feminism reveal that there is justification for both views, the skeptical and the enthusiastic, because feminist men are as diverse as feminist women.

Many of the eighteen contributors to this book--women, men, blacks, whites, gays, straights, transsexuals--use personal narrative to show ways that men's lives can shape their approaches to doing feminism and to convey the opportunities and challenges involved in integrating feminism into a man's life. Some authors argue that men's experiences prepare them to make contributions that are of crucial importance to feminist theory. Others argue that men must radically reform, or even abandon manhood and masculinity if they are to be feminists.

In Men Doing Feminism, feminist theory is used to illuminate men's lives, and men's lives serve as a basis for feminist theory.

more complex roles for fathers 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bruzzi describes the many depictions of fathers in mainstream Hollywood movies spanning the postwar years. We see that until the 1960s, these were often very traditional roles, with the mothers and children playing equally stereotypical parts, in counterpoint. The fathers are often depicted as wise and responsible. And holding down jobs while the wife stayed at home. Rarely were these roles questioned, until the rise of feminism in the 60s, when new directors and movies came forth.

Going forth, some movies took on a post-feminist masculinity that gave father's role and attitudes more complexity and nuance. Now, often, we see depictions of wives who working. Whereas earlier, this might have been seen as a failure of the father to support his family.

Editorial Review:

Offering a broad perspective on the Hollywood dad, looking at important Hollywood fathers and discussing films from many genres, this book adopts a multi-faceted theoretical approach, making use of psychoanalysis, sociology and masculinity studies and contextualising the father figure within both Hollywood and American history.

Excellent Ideas in this book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Don't be shy about calling yourself a "MAN". In a group of men, don't say "we are a group of people", instead say "we are a group of MEN!" At the end of a prayer, don't just say "Amen", say "a-MEN!" This book emphasizes not only the step-by-step instructions on forming a men's group, but also how to recognize yourself as a MAN and everything that makes you a MAN. And yes, that includes what you "feel" as well as what you "think".

I can't tell you how much I loved this book. While I am not the leader of a new group that is forming, this book has helped me to offer suggestions that were worthwhile in a men's group that I have joined. Sharing leadership, taking one's own initiative, these are things I was inspired to do myself from reading this book.

You know, "men's groups" are not just limited to men who come together to learn about themselves and look to each other to support. They are much more than that, even in everyday life or work situations. They can be a group of men that you work with every day.

While this book focuses on men supporting each other and the instructions on how to lead a men's group, it also helps a man to understand himself, and the very men he works with. While it may not always be appropriate for a man to follow the book's exercises and suggestions for men he already works with, the book is still provides good exercises for an individual man to follow himself, and realize who he really is on the inside.

The men's group I am a part of is not about "support", it is simply a group of men who have a common objective of working together to achieve. We are proud to do our part, and this book has helped me to understand the male psyche better, especially men who think differently than I do, and it helped me take part in creating a harmonious atmosphere with the men I work with.

Even if you are not planning to start a men's group, you just might consider it after you read this book.

Editorial Review:

What is the men's movement?
Hundreds of thousands of men all across North America are forming councils, lodges, and participating in "wild man weekends," inspired by the mythopoetic writings and personal testimonies of such authors as Robert Bly, Sam Keen, and John Lee.

What do you need to be part of it?
Robert Bly's practical advice to his gatherings of men is to go home and form small groups. This book, fifteen years in the making and written by one of the prominent forces in the men's movement, is the original handbook for forming and guiding these small support circles.

Here's what this book gives you:
This step-by-step manual grows out of Bill Kauth's two decades of experience with over 125 support groups. It will help the organizer or leader to start a group, find new members, solve group problems, and create rituals and activities that promote honesty, self--disclosure, and fun.

Editorial Review:

What role did manhood play in early American Politics? In A Republic of Men, Mark E. Kann argues that the American founders aspired to create a "republic of men" but feared that "disorderly men" threatened its birth, health, and longevity. Kann demonstrates how hegemonic norms of manhood–exemplified by "the Family Man," for instance--were deployed as a means of stigmatizing unworthy men, rewarding responsible men with citizenship, and empowering exceptional men with positions of leadership and authority, while excluding women from public life.

Kann suggests that the founders committed themselves in theory to the democratic proposition that all men were created free and equal and could not be governed without their own consent, but that they in no way believed that "all men" could be trusted with equal liberty, equal citizenship, or equal authority. The founders developed a "grammar of manhood" to address some difficult questions about public order. Were America's disorderly men qualified for citizenship? Were they likely to recognize manly leaders, consent to their authority, and defer to their wisdom? A Republic of Men compellingly analyzes the ways in which the founders used a rhetoric of manhood to stabilize American politics.
