Editorial Review:

"In this set of essays on topics like pornography, rape, sexual harassment, the Citadel, and paternity, Larry May develops a distinct moral vision that rejects traditional definitions of masculinity without requiring that we cease to

be men in order to act ethically. Bracing, fresh, and insightful, these essays make it possible for men to be both masculine and moral."--Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America: A Cultural History "Larry May is a careful philosopher who asks interesting and important questions about the interpersonal and social responsibilities of men in a society of continuing injustice to women. He makes precise distinctions and good arguments in answering those questions. A first-rate book."--Iris M. Young, author of Justice and the Politics of Difference "People are too used to books about 'gender' being about women. Larry May's book challenges men to think about why issues like pornography, sexuality, rape, harassment, and all-male institutions are their moral and social problems, too. May's arguments for men's shared responsibility in these matters of intense popular debate are always clear and often provocative. They make discussion hard to resist. This book is an excellent choice for courses in ethics or feminism."--Margaret Urban Walker, Fordham University

Editorial Review:

There are two marriages in every marital union, his and hers. Men and women live in worlds that are organized around gender, and their marriages reflect differing realities. As life companions, they respond to each other; but they also respond to the cultural definitions of what it means to be a husband and a wife. What has fascinated social and behavioral scientists for several years, however, is not only that husbands' and wives' experiences are different, but also that 'his' marriage is better than 'hers'. Numerous findings have reported that married men are better off than married wome on measures of both physical and mental health, but the reasons are not yet fully understood. In Marriage in Men's Lives Dr. Nock proposes an explanation to this issue. He focuses on marriage as a system of rules, customs, and expectations. The book shows that marriage changes men on basic dimensions of achievement, participation in public social life, and philanthropy because marriage reinforces such behaviors as part of adult masculinity. Men in modern society crave well-being, comfort, luxury, and prestige, and marriage affords a means of achieving these things within circumscribed legitimate boundaries. Using a huge data base of over 6,000 interviews with men the author has studied since 1979, Nock draws some interesting and far-reaching conclusions about the nature of marriage, and predicts that marriage is definitely here to stay.

Editorial Review:

Reveals the insidious effects of the language men use to speak about manhood.

Peter F. Murphy's purpose in this book is not to shock but rather to educate, provoke discussion, and engender change. Looking at the sexual metaphors that are so pervasive in American culture--jock, tool, shooting blanks, gang bang, and others even more explicit--he argues that men are trapped and damaged by language that constantly intertwines sexuality and friendship with images of war, machinery, sports, and work.

These metaphors men live by, Murphy contends, reinforce the view that relationships are tactical encounters that must be won, because the alternative is the loss of manhood. The macho language with which men cover their fear of weakness is a way of bonding with other men. The implicit or explicit attacks on women and gay men that underlie this language translate, in their most extreme forms, into actual violence. Murphy also believes, however, that awareness of these metaphorical power plays is the basis for behavioral change: "How we talk about ourselves as men can alter the way we live as men."

Real Men Are Not Afraid to Ask Direction 5 out of 5 stars.

Wingspan is the best anthology of the Mythopoetic wing of the Men's Movement. Its got all the right stuff, written by the best and most articulate teachers and practicianers. I have been doing spiritual direction, concentrating on Masculine spirituality in an interdisciplinary venue for many years, and I use and recommend Wingspan as a guide and text at all my retreats,study/support groups and while "walking the Path" with individual men on their spiritual journies.

Editorial Review:

The editor of Wingspan--the official journal of the men's movement--offers an authoritative introduction to the movement written by its leaders and including essays, poetry, letters, photos, cartoons, and much more.

This book is a compilation of some of the greatest thinkers of the male, his needs, experiences, griefs, wants, desires, myths and shadow fiqures. It will confirm many feelings males often have in common yet we feel separate and different because of these feelings and experiences. This book embraces some of the most important information of our time. It is a must read for the thinking growing deep masculine self.

Editorial Review:

The 1990s will be the decade in which the men's movement emerges as a vital force for redefining masculinity. To Be a Man can serve as the bible for the new male by exploring such issues as suppressed wildness, grief, and shame, as well as perennial topics such as competition, work, fatherhood, and loving relationaships. The audience for this New Consciousnesss reader also includes women who seek to understand their husbands and sons.

WINNING IN AMERICA - AGAINST ALL ODDS 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Excellent writing from a motivated and dedicated young man. Jerrold Ladd experienced disrupted education, a lack of early age positive male influence while proving first hand, that you can over come all obstacles and succeed in America.

It is a gut wrenching look into living in America's projects shortly after desegregation. It reminded me of the fact that life in America is not and has never been the same for everyone. For many, it is a living torture. Once you have read Out Of The Madness, you feel like you personally know the author. The author, Jerrold Ladd, tells an in-depth story about his life, his family (Mother, sister and brother) and some of his friends and associates. He provides an incredible amount of detail for a relatively short book (under 200 pages and large print). He allowed me to walk in his foot steps, feeling his disappointments, success's and failures. Each chapter presented intense quality of life and life treating situations that would test and potentially break the fiber of any man or woman. Jerrold exposes himself, his friends and associates in a bold and remarkable manner that allows you to actually feel his emotions. This book is a dead serious look at life within a segment of America, yesterday and today. The book reminds you that to many people (children and adults), needlessly, experience this and worst everyday. I recommend the book as a must read for everyone. My reason: This book provides an insight into a situation that many generations of Americans helped create. It gives motivation to those in similar situations and those that have not lived integrated into murder, drugs and abuse. Most of all, it proves, in America you can change your life.

Editorial Review:

An incredible odyssey follows one African American's struggle through horrific circumstances, clinging to a heroin-addicted mother, attempting to get out of the violent, drug-ridden projects, and ultimately, out of sheer guts and self-education, creating a new life. 75,000 ad/promo. Tour.

A great book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best works to come out of modern Jungian studies. To my mind, it is also far and away the very best of the many examinations of masculinity to have come out in the last fifteen years. It is especially a much needed antidote to the sentimental pap that came in the wake of Bly's "Iron John". A disenchanted ex-analysand of James Hillman, Tacey is now Hillman's (and Bly's) most potent critic. But he is concerned with more than simply poking holes in what he sees as schlock, he has much original thought to contribute to our ideas of masculine and feminine. His tone is risky, at times almost shrill, but his thought is clear and exciting.

Editorial Review:

The nature of masculinity is either treated critically from a sociological standpoint or analyzed from a psychological and spiritual perspective. Remaking Men argues that we must strive to bridge the gap between these separate traditions--masculinity should neither be hijacked by the spiritual, Jung-influenced men's movement, nor discussed merely as a product of socio-political forces.

Examining his own and other men's experience in a critical and lively discourse, David Tacey evades the simplistic optimism of the "inner journey" approach and the chronic pessimism of contemporary academic arguments, discussing such topics as father-absence, homoerotic desire and the dilemmas of feminine men. This is a fascinating look at masculinity for those who want to explore self and society with intelligence and soul.

Funny and Useful! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book at a local bookstore and had to pick it up as an early Father's Day gift for my dad. Kenneth Karpinski uses humor to pass along clothing and style advice to men. The tone of the book is joking, not negative or condescending, so no one should get offended.

This book is the perfect gift for any man in your life!

Lame and disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The advice in this book is so basic and obvious that you would have bigger problems than fashion if you actually learned something. The title is pure marketing. There is nothing in the book that targets women's opinions over other men's opinions. I'm sending it back.

Editorial Review:

How to tell the man in your life to "clean up his image"—practical advice from an expert in men’s clothing and professional appearance told with wit and humor. Combining humor with usable advice - "Mistakes Men Make That Women Hate" identifies and corrects 101 dress and style errors that many, if not all, men make and that most, if not all, women hate. Image expert Ken Karpinski hits a sore spot every time with his on-target observations. Readers will laugh as they see themselves and others in the "mistakes," and will find a way to improve their own clothing, grooming, or behavior in response to the humorous instructive advice.
