Editorial Review:

Even in this age of working mothers, the role of fathering is often overlooked. This book illuminates the realities of fathering by presenting the results of an empirical study conducted over four decades and covering four generations of fathers and children. Through case studies and data analysis, Snarey demonstrates that men's care for their families reaps immense and long-lasting benefits - for themselves, for their offspring and for future generations. In striking contrast to research that considers fathers to be obscure or peripheral figures, Snarey reveals their position as central caregivers and characterizes their most effective nurturing behaviours. He examines fathers' involvement in three vital realms of their children's development: social-emotional, intellectual-academic, and physical-athletic. Looking specifically at fathers' relationships with their oldest children during the first two decades of their lives, Snarey addresses issues of fathering in both childhood and adolescence. He presents portraits of individual father-son and father-daughter relationships, and measures and defines the ways in which "good" fathers are constructively engaged in and supportive of children's growth. Snarey also focuses on the fathers themselves. He explores how men's boyhood experiences with their own fathers affect their subsequent parenting styles. Then, Snarey observes how various fathering experiences affect men at mid-life, in their marriages, and throughout their careers. His study also considers how the threat of infertility affects fathers' ability to care for the next generation. Within the current wave of scholarly interest in fathering, this study is grounded in Erik H. Erikson's model of psycho-social generativity, aiming to add a significant dimension to Erikson's theory by applying it to empirical research. Snarey makes a contribution to male, child, family, and developmental psychology, and addresses issues of ongoing concern in the fields of sociology and education.

Editorial Review:

How do men perceive their bodies? how can empirical study of the body inform our understanding of the social world of men? what are the implications of such understanding for public health? These days it seems that everybody has a view on what it means to be "a man" and why men behave in the way they do. The irony is that very little of this debate is informed by what men themselves have to say. This book takes an in-depth look at three key contemporary issues -health, identity and the body - by exploring how "ordinary" men talk about their bodies and experience them in a variety of circumstances. designed to complement the considerable theoretical work on the body over the past decade, this work draws on qualitative and quantitative data as well as addressing theoretical issues. It demonstrates the importance of developing an empirically and theoretically informed approach to men's health based on an understanding of male embodiment. It will be invaluable to students and researchers in sociology, health, gender and cultural studies, as well as health professionals concerned with men's health.

A woman's view of *Naked at Gender Gap...* 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Asa Baber is actual proof that Playboy magazine really DOES have interesting articles. His most recent book is a collection of his columns from the magazine which explores the minefield of gender issues in a witty, vulgar, brave and sometimes weary masculine voice. If you really want to know what most men are afraid to talk about, read this book. If a women wants her Significant Male Other to view her as truly liberated, she'll buy this book for him!

Editorial Review:

The celebrated Playboy columnist offers his slant on relations between the sexes in a collection of essays with such provoking titles as "Equal Rights for Men," "Boss Ladies," and "The L Word." By the author of The Land of a Million Elephants.

Editorial Review:

The first book on the health of boys and men designed for women -- the unsung heroes who make most families' health-care decisions -- From Boys to Men will forever dispel the notion that women are the weaker sex.

There is a shocking gap in health and longevity between males and females. Men die, on average, nearly six years earlier than women and have a higher mortality rate for all ten leading causes of death in America. Yet there is no known biological reason.

Perhaps the answer lies in social forces that teach men not to care for themselves, says author, physician, and CBS medical correspondent Emily Senay. Instead, caregiving falls to wives, partners, mothers, sisters, and daughters, who have never had a resource written specifically to help them understand and cope with the health issues of men and boys.

Until now. With an expert, intimate voice, Dr. Senay offers accessible, pragmatic information and anecdotes that follow males from conception through the arc of life. Mothers of sons will learn about the unique issues boys face as they grow, including:

• Health issues unique to baby boys

• The major health threats to boys -- accidents and injuries

• Understanding the higher risk of learning disabilities, including AD/HD and other developmental problems

• Weight issues and body image

• Knowing how and when to discuss sexuality

• Helping teenagers take healthy risks

• Understanding the new world of sports, including pressure for early specialization

For men, Dr. Senay covers such topics as:

• Helping him change -- how to work as partners to lose weight, improve diet, or quit smoking

• Helping your partner overcome denial, one of the biggest threats to men's health

• Solving bedroom problems

• Helping him lower cholesterol and blood pressure

• Recognizing and treating depression and stress

• Essential medical tests every man should have

• Snoring and the promise of rest

As a mother, wife, daughter -- and doctor -- Emily Senay shares her readers' concern for the men in their lives -- and provides the answers women have been waiting for. And as men take better care of themselves, the longevity gap will close as their sons learn by example.

Men Need Style Too 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Manifest X.O is a great coffee table book. The style of the book itself attracts attention. A look inside is even more enlightening. This book delves into many issues pertaining to style for men that go beyond the scope of fashion-oriented magazines such as G.Q. Manifest is a great guide for aging male grungers and hip-hoppers who want to ditch their oversized clothes and gaudy jewelry for something a little more refined and timeless. The book also makes a great plug for manners and taking responsibility for one's actions. Manifest is must-have for men of style and men who want to have style.

A Modern Gentleman's Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A must have for today's gentleman. In a time where being a distinguished gentleman is no longer pasted on from generation to generation this book fills the void by detailing how a gentleman should dress, speak, and carry oneself with the cardinal principle being confidence. The book is a bit bias about what alcoholic drinks to consume because it is presented by Hennessey, but other than that it is the ultimate guide to a missing art.

God's plan for godly men 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This a book that not only benefits the men that read it but their wives, children, churches, and communities. It reaches into places that men sometimes refuse to go or find it difficult to deal with.

Editorial Review:

Life is not a flow chart. We weren't meant to master it on our own. We weren't meant to be mastered by it either. The discussion guides in the Transformation of a Man's Heart series put us in conversation with God and with one another to see how God shapes and transforms us in the ordinary experiences of our lives.Am I every going to change? he asks. If we're honest with ourselves, we'll admit that we're not the men we wish we were. Not only our dreams but our values are vulnerable to external forces and internal chaos: the wounds inflicted on us as well as the compromises we've allowed ourselves to make. In this discussion guide, inspired by essays in The Transformation of a Man's Heart, men will be reminded that wherever they find themselves, God is there with them, inviting them forward onto a new and better path. This study accompanies the book, The Transformation of a Man's Heart, compiled and edited by Stephen W. Smith.

This is the basic book for raising your son 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book presents in a way that no one can argue with, the clear links between how we treat and train our boys and why they act out later with violence. Boys will be boys, we say, excusing the inexcusable... because it was taught to us by our parents too.

Break the chain! Break the chains that tie so many young men in prison for violent actions. Stop the cycle that says, "I couldn't help it. It's just natural to get angry, to hit, to ..." Save a boy from this curse.

Let him have a nurturing father (-figure), let him play with dolls and practice caring for others (as a future father of America), let him learn how to feel and talk. Don't lock him up!

Let him learn to be a real, caring man.

Teaching Non-Violence 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is divided into three sections. The introduction (first three chapters) is about violence and it's basis in our culture and biology. Myriam Miedzian became interested in this work of non-violence through the role model of her peaceful father and the horrors he had to endure over his lifetime in war. She has become aware that the majority of violent acts (criminal, domestic, and in war) are perpetrated by men. She represents a very balanced view, which works towards equality and change.

Section one is about parenting (especially fathering) in a way that teaches non-violence. Section two is a fascinating education about school programs to teach about non-violence through responsible parenting, and ending bullying, war, and bigotry. Section three is about the media and the encouragement of violence through sports, TV, movies, music, wrestling TV, "violence toys" (including video games), and marketing to children.

I highly recommend this book to parents, and all people who work with children.

Editorial Review:

Businessmen with kids often feel trapped between rising expectations at work and at home. Although business demands seem to increase every day, fathers are now expected - and want - to be involved parents. But there are never enough hours in the day. What's a business dad to do? Tom Hirschfeld, veteran businessman and father of two, addresses the dilemma with surprising insights and sensible solutions. He shows that many of the skills and abilities required to succeed in today's economy - such as motivation, team building, empathy, negotiation, and planning - can be applied just as successfully to parenting. Businessmen who leave their corporate skills at the office each evening may actually be handicapping themselves in the struggle to be more effective fathers. Work and parenting don't have to be separate, competing efforts, but can help and enrich each other. Hirschfeld is a business dad writing for business dads. With common sense and a humorous touch, Business Dad applies proven business concepts to the challenges every father faces, such as communication, discipline, instilling moral values, sibling rivalry, and teamwork with Mom. It also tackles them toughest daily problems of the business dad, including work-family conflict, frequent travel, and time management. As a major bonus, finally, it shows how the committed dad can win at work, turning his fathering experience into a huge competitive advantage. Fathering is the most important job a businessman can undertake, and Business Dad is the perfect job manual - filled with lessons from business history, tips from successful executives, and practical wisdom that could come only from real-life experience."
