weak and pathetic 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 29 people found this review helpful.

What's so hilarious about this book is that it is self-proving.

The book claims that American men are weak and pathetic. The fact that anyone would ever buy this book or read it PROVES that far too many American men are weak and pathetic.

What kind of loser reads books that advise you that it's okay to bully your wife, and that try to convince you that men are an oppressed minority group on the verge of extinction?

What's happened to this country? In the past abusive people were just abusive. Now abusive people need an author to HOLD THEIR HAND and tell them that it's somehow OKAY to be abusive?

Sick.

The author is sick. His fans are sick. The nation is sick. America needs therapy.

Fatherless Children and the Social Choas 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The divorce and adultery culture of North America has spawned social chaos that is reflected in numerous statistical research. While the women's movement has been tremendous it has also been used to support the annihilation of the importance of a father. This argument is not just a platform for conservative politics, it is about a real social condition that had reached epic proportions. The rise in fatherless children has probably added to an increase in delinquent behavior, social manners going out the window, women being preyed upon for exploitation, fatherless boys with heightened aggression, this is not good for all of us. A must read on why the family IS important no matter who you vote for.

Editorial Review:

A detailed study states that the father figure is an increasingly absent member of the family unit and offers statistical information and projected consequences that are related to the rise in absent fatherhood. 40,000 first printing. $30,000 ad/promo. Tour.

Get Ready to Get It 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is so much more than "male sexuality" - it's a relationship primer. Dr. Bader is a compassionate, insightful and gifted writer. He obviously knows his stuff, but unlike so many other books written by psychologists, the point isn't for us to know he knows his stuff - it's for US to know his stuff. His humor and storytelling bring this book - and the subject - to life. Highly recommend.

Editorial Review:

At first glance the sexual male seems easy to understand, but beneath the surface lie complexities that disrupt lives and relationships. Respected psychologist Michael Bader takes an honest look at the nuances of male sexuality, addressing issues such as sexual boredom, internet sex, and sexual fantasies that can leave women bewildered and men ashamed. Illustrated with engaging examples from his practice, Male Sexuality gives readers, both women and men, deeper understanding of male behavior. Through increased awareness of the psychology behind the sex, Bader aims to enhance individual self-esteem and improve communication in relationships.

Editorial Review:

Do you want to be a great lover and enjoy consistently great sex? Would you like reliable erections that don't wilt in the middle of lovemaking? Would you like superb ejaculatory control? Would you like your penis to be as large as it possibly can be? Do you want women to sing your sexual praises? All these sexual benefits can be yours if you read Great Sex and take its message to heart.

Author Michael Castleman is the nation's top journalist specializing in men's sexuality. He has been a sex educator, counselor, and writer for 30 years, including 5 years as the expert who answered the sex questions submitted to the Playboy Advisor. Written with the help of an advisory board that includes some of the nation's leading sex therapists, Great Sex is certain to help you overcome your sex problems; become a better, more confident lover; and enjoy the sex of your dreams.

Castleman's message is surprisingly simple: Stop imitating the rushed, all-genital sex you see in pornography. Instead, cultivate the opposite: leisurely, playful, total-body, massage-based lovemaking that includes the genitals, of course, but is not focused on them.

Sex inspired by pornography is a major reason why men think their penises are too small and why they have erection and ejaculatory problems. With wit, wisdom, and down-to-earth sympathy for men, Castleman discusses his own penis--like yours, it's a little too small--and his own struggles with balky erections, rapid ejaculation, and not expressing orgasm at all. Then, based on state-of-the-art sex therapy techniques, leading sexology texts, and almost 400 medical journal articles, he reveals how to overcome these issues and enjoy a satisfying and exciting sex life.

What's more, the sexual style Castleman advocates is the way most women prefer to make love. Take Castleman's advice and you'll benefit by having a lover who is more arousable, responsive, enthusiastic, and complimentary. In other words, when you embrace sensual, creative, whole-body lovemaking, everybody wins. You have fewer sex problems. The woman you love gets what she wants in bed. And you both enjoy sex that's hotter, more erotic, and more fulfilling.

Editorial Review:

  • Why are so many of today's supermen superclueless?

  • Why are so many ambitious young women unable to find boyfriends as successful and independent as they are?

  • Why do so many men prefer the escapist digitized world of SPIKE TV, Jackass, and Grand Theft Auto to the reality of their own lives?

In an eye-opening exploration of contemporary American manhood, The Decline of Men shows how men are struggling to redefine what being a man means in today's world. Their confusion has led to rampant male malaise, which has left many men feeling alienated and disconnected. Unable to communicate their frustrated thoughts or emotions effectively, too many guys are slacking off and opting out of their manly obligations, producing an entire generation of men who are ditching their own potential and failing the moms, wives, and girlfriends who love them.

The Decline of Men is a wake-up call to this distressing state of affairs. As award-winning journalist Guy Garcia reports, rather than working hard to achieve top grades or a promotion at work, too many American males squander their energy tracking their fantasy football league scores or mastering the latest video game. Men drop out of school at a far higher rate than women and are far likelier to die early because of poor health habits. Even the male Y chromosome is said to be at risk of disappearing altogether one day.

Packed with startling statistics, informed by pop culture, and narrated in the entertaining style for which Guy Garcia is known, The Decline of Men sheds light on a problem that has wreaked havoc on the American family and urges men and women to look past the gender wars to address this national emergency together.

Which Men's Lives are they talking about? 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 47 people found this review helpful.

Don't let the fact that this book is edited by two men fool you. This book treats white, heterosexual men as sadistic oppressors and is driven by a women's studies/feminist and sometimes Marxist agenda.

You can get the complete summary of the book from this quote contained in it: "Heterosexual men maintain their status by the oppression of gay men; middle-aged men can maintain their dominance over older and younger men; upper-class men can exploit working-class men,; and white men can enjoy priviledges at the expense of men of color."

(I am not sure here whether a middle aged gay man dominates a young heterosexual, but I digress...)

If you want to find a positive image of (non-gay) men it is not here.

Articles include (with a quote from each article):

Men on Rape , "Rape may be America's fastest growing violent crime; no one can be certain because it is not clear whether more rapes are being committed or reported." (uh, so therefore let's just assume it is true as a basis for the article...)

Getting Off on Feminism, "There has to be a difference between being straight and being a breeder. And breeding is just one of the many assumptions that our culture applies to male heterosexuality." (Written by a feminist male who is really much too worried about what all his feminist pals think of him)

Life Styles of Gay Husbands and Fathers, no quote. A balanced article about the experiences of males who figure out they're gay after being married and having children. This book has a very high gay to straight ratio in articles however that overstates the prevalence of homosexuality among men.

Fraternities and the College Rape Culture, "A rape culture is strengthened by rules that permit alcohol only at fraternity parties. Under this system, men control the parties and dominate the men as well as the women that attend." (This actually was an evenly balanced article that focused on how to structure organizations and events to reduce the potentiality of rape)

The Fathers' Rights Movement: Contradictions in Rhetoric and Practice, "Indeed, fathers want to play a role in their children's lives, but for most, that role is merely a continuation of their predivorce role of the traditional father who exercises his power and control." (the "but for most" helps the authors dismiss my anecdotal evidence of being a single parent. Note we can say "single mother" easily and understandably but "single father" requires explanation so we have to resort to "single parent".)

The grammatical errors in the quotes are from the book and are not typos.

Some articles use made up statistics, gross generalities, and outright distortions to make their point. Many of the articles are balanced in and of themselves but, taken as a whole collection in this book, present a distorted view of "Men's Lives."

Editorial Review:

Edited by two of the field's most prominent researchers, this best-selling reader on men and masculinity contains the most current articles available. Organized around themes that define masculinity, this reader takes a life-course perspective, using the idea that men (as well as women) are "gendered" and that this gendering process is a central experience for men.

Editorial Review:

Here is a powerful reply to Iron John, a fresh look at the complicated nature of what R.W. Connell calls "masculinities." One of the most important voices in the new feminist scholarship by men, Connell provides a nuanced and incisive analysis of how our notions of masculinity have evolved in psychoanalysis, social science, and historically in the creation of a global economy. There is not one but many masculinities, he claims, in a bold critique of the "men's movement" and other simplistic approaches to sexual identity. Instead, Connell delineates the complicated dynamics of masculine politics and recent changes in male identity.
Drawing on rich ethnographic work, Connell offers portraits of dozens of men of different classes, some working to change masculinities, some resisting change. Eel openly disparages his wife: "The first chance I can see to get rid of her, she's gone." Mark, who calls himself "a very straight gay," thinks men should behave in traditionally masculine ways. "If you're a guy why don't you just act like a guy?" he asks. Danny, undertaking the "long haul" of his own sexism, admits, "It's hard not to be aggressive sometimes."
Connell offers the first critical history of ideas and the most sophisticated theoretical analysis of masculinity to date. His attempts to understand changes in male identity and to think about these issues on a global scale are unique. Integrating social science, feminist theory, gay theory, and psychoanalysis in an innovative yet unusually accessible way, he develops a new theory of masculinity politics. This is a book for everyone interested in the history of western masculinities and the sexual politics of the contemporary era.

Liking alternative music does not make an "alternative" dad 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Unlike apparently many reviewers here, I am not familiar with Neil Pollack's previous books and other published articles in magazines and webzines. But when I saw this book at my local library, I simply couldn't resist picking this up.

In "Alternadad" (290 pages), author Neil Pollack basically brings a memoir of his life so far, and the book can be divided in two parts, the early part, living in Chicago and eventually meeting his wife, and then the next part, involving moving to/living in Philadelphia and Austin and, of course, becoming a dad at age 33. I have to wonder what the book's title "Alternadad" is really all about. The author likes alternative music, but so what? Many people do too (reason I was tempted by the book's title in the first place). Yet, there is really nothing much "alternative" about how they are raising their son: the baby watches Sesame Street and eats cereal like millions of kids; the author frequents Target and other places that millions of Americans go to, and dotes on his young son, pretty much luke most parents actually. Or is it perhaps due to taking his young son to the Austin City Limits music festival? "I looked at the roster. Franz Ferdinand! the Killers! The Soundtrack of Our Lives! Modest Mouse! I imagined myself saying to my son, 'Elijah, we took you to see Moudest Mouse before you were even two'. Not Mickey Mouse, Modest Mouse! I was going to be the coolest dad ever!" Except that when the festival rolled around, he realizes that it's way too hot to enjoy it and abandons the idea after the first day. Or wondering what age it will be appropriate to watching his favorite movie, "Airplace", with his son. Etc.

In all, the book certainly couldn't live up to the intruiging title of the book. In fact, I'd venture to say that this is pretty much how millions and millions of moms and dads are raising their sons and daughters. If this is "alternative" in the author's view, I cannot even begin to wonder what "middle of the road" would be like.

Editorial Review:

With the publication of Alternadad, Neal Pollack became the spokesperson for a new generation of parents. Pollack, a self-styled party guy known mostly for outrageous literary antics, recounts how he and his wife became responsible parents without sacrificing their passion for pop culture. From an ill-fated family trip to the Austin City Limits Festival, to yanking his son out of an absurd corporate gymnastics class, to dealing with the child’s ongoing biting problem, Pollack captures the wonders, terrors, and idiocies of parenting today. Alternadad is both an engaging and amusing memoir of fatherhood, and a fascinating portrait of a new version of the American family.

Editorial Review:

Over the last 100 years, perhaps no segment of the American population has been more analyzed than black males. The subject of myriad studies and dozens of government boards and commissions, black men have been variously depicted as the progenitors of pop culture and the menaces of society, their individuality often obscured by the narrow images that linger in the public mind. Ten years after the Million Man March, the largest gathering of black men in the nation's history, Washington Post staffers began meeting to discuss what had become of black men in the ensuing decade. How could their progress and failures be measured?

Their questions resulted in a Post series which generated enormous public interest and inspired a succession of dynamic public meetings. It included the findings of an ambitious nationwide poll and offered an eye-opening window into questions of race and black male identity—questions gaining increasing attention with the emergence of Senator Barack Obama as a serious presidential contender. At the end of the day, the project revealed that black men are deeply divided over how they view each other and their country.

Now collected in one volume with several new essays as well as an introduction by Pulitzer Prizewinning novelist Edward P. Jones, these poignant and provocative articles let us see and hear black men like they've never been seen and heard before.

History and now... 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book is extremely useful as you search information about what to wear...and know few about it. History, materials, are well described but I feel somewhat disappointed as I found no photos, and few counselling about how to match the different items, and when...except for the excellent formal wear chapters.
But after all, this is a pocket book, well-done and quite instructing!

Editorial Review:

While fashion is subject to seasonal change, the wardrobe of the man who dresses in classic style is marked by a distinctive continuity. A Well-Dressed Gentleman’s Pocket Guide is both an etiquette and a history of impeccable dressing and classic styling. It illustrates the fine distinctions of the gentleman’s dress code, arming the reader with the requisite information to dress for any occasion. It covers the entire wardrobe—from suits, coats, shirts, and shoes to umbrellas and underclothing—their history, manufacture, tailoring, materials, patterns, and colors. There are also summary style charts and warnings of classic faux pas. Any gentleman should consider himself incomplete without this elegant and authoritative pocket accessory.
