Real Men Are Not Afraid to Ask Direction 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Wingspan is the best anthology of the Mythopoetic wing of the Men's Movement. Its got all the right stuff, written by the best and most articulate teachers and practicianers. I have been doing spiritual direction, concentrating on Masculine spirituality in an interdisciplinary venue for many years, and I use and recommend Wingspan as a guide and text at all my retreats,study/support groups and while "walking the Path" with individual men on their spiritual journies.

Editorial Review:

The editor of Wingspan--the official journal of the men's movement--offers an authoritative introduction to the movement written by its leaders and including essays, poetry, letters, photos, cartoons, and much more.

4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is a compilation of some of the greatest thinkers of the male, his needs, experiences, griefs, wants, desires, myths and shadow fiqures. It will confirm many feelings males often have in common yet we feel separate and different because of these feelings and experiences. This book embraces some of the most important information of our time. It is a must read for the thinking growing deep masculine self.

Editorial Review:

The 1990s will be the decade in which the men's movement emerges as a vital force for redefining masculinity. To Be a Man can serve as the bible for the new male by exploring such issues as suppressed wildness, grief, and shame, as well as perennial topics such as competition, work, fatherhood, and loving relationaships. The audience for this New Consciousnesss reader also includes women who seek to understand their husbands and sons.

What a real Eunuch has to say. 1 out of 5 stars.
27 of 45 people found this review helpful.

I have not read this book but I am a real life Eunuch. I had my testicles surgically removed. In an Interview on Salon.com the author says "Castration does not get rid of the sexual drive, get rid of erections or any amount of sexual activity." WRONG!!! How would he know any way? He is NOT a Eunuch. He has had a vasectomy but that is totally different. I can speak from experience; when a man becomes a eunuch his sex drive drops to absolute zero. I had a very strong sex drive prior to castration but it is now completely gone. The only way for a Eunuch to regain his sex drive is to take some form of testosterone replacement. I have never heard of any real life Eunuch who was not on testosterone replacement therapy that had a sex drive. Don't waste your time on this book; the author obviously didn't do enough, if any research. If you want to learn about Eunuchs then search the web. There are a lot of us out there, and our numbers are growing.

Editorial Review:

Castration is a lively history of the meaning, function, and act of castration from its place in the early church to its secular reinvention in the Renaissance as a spiritualized form of masculinity in its 20th century position at the core of psychoanalysis.

A great book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best works to come out of modern Jungian studies. To my mind, it is also far and away the very best of the many examinations of masculinity to have come out in the last fifteen years. It is especially a much needed antidote to the sentimental pap that came in the wake of Bly's "Iron John". A disenchanted ex-analysand of James Hillman, Tacey is now Hillman's (and Bly's) most potent critic. But he is concerned with more than simply poking holes in what he sees as schlock, he has much original thought to contribute to our ideas of masculine and feminine. His tone is risky, at times almost shrill, but his thought is clear and exciting.

Editorial Review:

The nature of masculinity is either treated critically from a sociological standpoint or analyzed from a psychological and spiritual perspective. Remaking Men argues that we must strive to bridge the gap between these separate traditions--masculinity should neither be hijacked by the spiritual, Jung-influenced men's movement, nor discussed merely as a product of socio-political forces.

Examining his own and other men's experience in a critical and lively discourse, David Tacey evades the simplistic optimism of the "inner journey" approach and the chronic pessimism of contemporary academic arguments, discussing such topics as father-absence, homoerotic desire and the dilemmas of feminine men. This is a fascinating look at masculinity for those who want to explore self and society with intelligence and soul.

Academic studies of sexual behavior of men. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is an academic treatise, replete with references to research and to academic studies and documentation. It is fascinating, but primarily focused on sexual behavior and sexual deviance as well as violence and their treatment by the courts and by the medical profession during the years identified. I believe it may be of interest to those with an interest in the psychosocial/historical aspects of sexuality and men.

Editorial Review:

In this path-breaking history of manhood and masculinity, Angus McLaren examines how nineteenth- and twentieth-century western society created what we now take to be the traditional model of the heterosexual male.

"Inherently interesting. . . . Exhibitionism, pornography, and deception all have their place here."--Library Journal

"An appealing wealth of evidence of what trials can reveal about the boundaries of men's roles around the turn of the century."--Kirkus Reviews

"It is difficult to imagine a better guide to the most notorious scandals of our great-grandparents' day."--Graham Rosenstock, Lambda Book Report

Editorial Review:

Shock waves riveted the Mattel, Inc., boardroom in 1961 when female executives suggested that Barbie's boy-toy, Ken--in keeping with Barbie's own physiognomy--ought to be a little more anatomically correct. No one was suggesting 1.25-inch-to-1-inch-scale plastic genitalia, mind you, just a modest groin bulge. But male execs at the toy company were scandalized; the suggested modifications did not make Ken more "authentic" in their eyes--they made him pornographic.

My, how things have changed. In The Male Body, Susan Bordo (who snagged a Pulitzer nomination for 1993's Unbearable Weight) offers a frank, sprightly, and, yes, educational look at the male nude as an index to attitudes about sexuality in the broth of media and pop culture in which, like it or not, we all stew. While the Greeks were unafraid to celebrate masculine beauty, men have been strangely sexless throughout most of Western history--until Hollywood rediscovered the male body when Marlon Brando first shed his T-shirt in A Streetcar Named Desire. It's only been in the '90s, however, that the male image has gone so far as to reclaim its penis. From de facto censorship to near idolatry, has ever an organ made such a journey in one brief decade? But it's not the penis alone that makes a man a man; perhaps, Bordo concludes, it's time for us to rethink our metaphors of manhood. --Patrizia DiLucchio

Ubersexmania! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this a fun and interesting read. As someone who works in the media, I found the chapter on mass media, advertising and the modern man of particular interest. The authors illuminate how men have fallen into the beer-guzzling, skirt-chasing, stomach-scratching stereotypes in media. And it challenges us to come up with multi-layered portrayls. And if you're a George Clooney fan, you'll enjoy this read even more. They've dubbed him an 'ubersexual' ;)

Editorial Review:

A revealing exploration of a key market in flux, The Future of Men highlights substantial demographic shifts and their impact—from the stay-at-home dad to the new macho revival. The authors draw on their expertise as top thought leaders from the advertising world—they were the ones to create the buzz around “übersexuals” and “metrosexuals”—to show that the new definition of masculinity is a result of complex social, biological, and economic influences. From automobiles to cosmetics to consumer electronics, this cutting-edge book explains how to tap the potential of the male market.

Funny and Useful! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book at a local bookstore and had to pick it up as an early Father's Day gift for my dad. Kenneth Karpinski uses humor to pass along clothing and style advice to men. The tone of the book is joking, not negative or condescending, so no one should get offended.

This book is the perfect gift for any man in your life!

Lame and disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The advice in this book is so basic and obvious that you would have bigger problems than fashion if you actually learned something. The title is pure marketing. There is nothing in the book that targets women's opinions over other men's opinions. I'm sending it back.

Editorial Review:
