I looked forward to this book and was disappointed. As someone stated in another review, it's the same fantasies over and over again. Many of them are written using the same slang and terminology to reference certain parts of the anatomy. Considering the English language has a dozen words or different ways to describe the female anatomy it seemed more than a bit odd that most of the women who submitted fantasies would all choose to use the same 2 or 3 words. About 1/4 of the way into the book it started to seem like the author wrote a lot of the fantasies herself since she also uses the same slang lingo in her chapter intros and the fantasies are all so similar. The book also lacks variety but if you're interested in reading the mostly tame fantasies of totally inexperienced or totally repressed women, this might be a good read.

This is a compilation of the many letters sent to the author by women sharing their most intimate sexual fantasies about topics such as masturbation, oral sex, sex with more than one man, lesbian sex and anal sex. In her extended introduction to these erotic fantasies the author compares the fantasies of today's women with those featured in her previous book, "My Secret Garden". The author comes to the conclusion that despite everything the fantasies of the women of the 1990s are more liberated, more experimental and more outrageous than those of the women of the 1970s. More importantly, the author also notes a tendency for younger women to be freer of guilt about explicit sexual fantasizing. Nancy Friday is the author of "Men in Love".

Not since the works of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois have I encountered such in-depth work. This book is among Davis' early publications. Although the work is scholarly, it can be read by a wide audience. Research is extensive in three separate but intertwined issues that have contributed to human disparities around the globe. A shortcoming is that Dr. Davis confined the work to United States and Western Europe and, as a result, makes ethnocentric conclusions that are not applicable to a global perspective.

The author quotes a lot of notable historical figures to back her point and gives us truth that we aren't taught in school. It's a great read just for the history of black women in America, and a good starting point to delve deeper into the subject and do some research of your own. She just stated the facts and stats, and I can appreciate that. No overwording or overly bias opinions on the subject matter. I love that

This revision of the best-selling text for undergraduate courses offered by departments of Psychology in the Psychology of Women, Sex and Gender, or Sex Roles draws on research from sociology, anthropology, communication, biology, history, and literature. Known for its engaging, never oversimplified style, WOMEN AND GENDER features an integrated thematic organization throughout the book that is synthesized in its final chapter.

The authors, well-known, active scholars in the field, take a social constructionist perspective (i.e., gender is a social system of meanings, status, and power, not just a personality characteristic of individuals). The text takes a feminist point of view, advocating basic equality of women and men social, economical, and political while objectively reporting research findings. Information on race, age, class, and sexual orientation, is included and integrated into all text chapters. Four themes are woven throughout the book: Gender is more than just sex; Language and naming are a source of power; Women are a diverse group; and Psychology should be related to social change

In the third edition, the short introductory chapter is now immediately followed by the popular chapter about women stereotypes and the harm they do, while the more theoretical chapter on personality has been integrated into other appropriate chapters and linked to current research and issues in the news. More attention is paid to the role of the media in defining girls and women of all ages. The chapter shows how images of women continue to differ from those of men, examines how the media sees women and men world-wide, and looks at the similarities of these depictions cross-culturally. Each chapter now ends with “Connecting Themes,” summary of how the book’s four themes are played out in the topics of the chapter. Much more material is included in each chapter on the cultural and ethnic diversity of women with added new findings on ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, social class, women of color, international issues, and women from around the world. In each chapter, a new “Making a Difference” boxed feature spotlights a woman activist who has changed society. A new chapter four on the meanings of difference asks, “How different are men and women really?” and answers this question in terms of contrasting feminist perspectives, presented in the context of concrete social problems. A new concluding chapter 15, “Making a Difference: Toward a Better Future for Women,” ties together the four themes of the book and presents an optimistic view of both how the women's movement has changed changed society and how students can continue to change society positively in response to the women’s movement.

Other new topics include: analysis of the backlash against feminism (chapter 1); the role of sexism in the schools (chapters 3 and 8); media images of women athletes and the representation of women in rap and music videos (chapter 4); pornography, race, and hostility toward women (chapters 4 and 14); factors influencing women’s perception of their leadership abilities (chapter 5); biological determinism in the media (chapters 3 and 6); the “silencing” of adolescent girls (chapter 8); differences among diverse groups of women in the meaning of sexuality and body image, and implications for therapeutic treatment (chapters 9 and 15); the new reproductive technology and the medical, ethical, and legal issues it raises; woman-headed households; and socially created obstacles to mothering (all in chapter 11); a new synthesis of the costs and benefits of juggling work, family, and relationship roles (chapter 12); changing cultural views of menopause, and achievement in mid- and later life (chapter 13).

This book is a superlative sequel to the early Material World by Peter Menzel. I have read the earlier book so many times that when this new volume came out, I bought it immediately sight unseen. In this book, Faith D'Aluisio revisits 19 of the 30 families featured in the Material World to find out about the women's lives.

The articles are organized alphabetically, together with short features on marriage, laundry, work, education, childcare, hair, food, water, and friends. At the back of the book, we find statistical charts about women, and a useful statistics glossary. Each article has an extended interview with the mother of the family that reveals parts of her life story as well as her attitudes towards topics such as marriage, child care, education, money, and possessions. The articles are of course filled with numerous color photos, large and small, of the women at work and with other family members.

The Material World itself is a monumental book, but it was hard to go back to it after reading this book, where we find that the details presented in the Material World were so incredibly superficial. For example, family life for Maria dos Anjos Ferrerira in Brazil or Carmen Balderas de Castillo in Mexico isn't nearly as rosy as one might guess from looking at their original smiling photos in the Material World. On the other hand, Zhanna Kapralova from Russia continues to be a survivor. No matter how much you learn from the Material World, it will be far eclipsed by this book with its extended interviews and additional photographs.
