Editorial Review:

Frances Kuffel had been obese all of her life, coming of age and beyond feeling like a freak. For years, she struggled with her weight until, at forty-two, she lost an incredible 188 pounds. Transformed at last into the “normal" woman she always dreamed of becoming, Kuffel found herself unprepared for life on the planet of the thin. With unflinching honesty and a wickedly dark sense of humor, Passing for Thin is the first memoir to take readers on the incredible journey from fat to thin, shining a light on the shared human experience of feeling, at times, uncomfortable in our own skin.

After a life of obesity robbed her of the joys of having lovers, a husband, children—and even made it impossible to enjoy a movie, when standing in line was too painful, or travel, when airplane seats were too small—Kuffel was catapulted into a strange new world where she didn’t speak the language and didn’t know the rules. While other girls had already learned how to flirt and date, and while other women her age had long-ago lost their teenage self-consciousness, Kuffel became an awkward adolescent in a body she did not know how to use. In Passing for Thin, she shares her clear-eyed account of moving from observer to player, while struggling to enjoy the freedom and pleasure her new shape has given her.

As Kuffelgradually comes to know–and love–the stranger in the mirror, she learns that this body does not define her, but now frees her to become the woman she's always wanted to be.

Editorial Review:

Lady. Let's face it: the word inspires a host of associations' many of which call to mind the powdered-and-corseted characters in a Merchant-Ivory film, or tea-sipping debutantes in gloves and pearls. That is, until now.

Enter The Art and Power of Being a Lady' the book that brushes the cobwebs off and makes "lady" something every girl and woman will want to be called-whether her role model is Audrey Hepburn, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Billie Jean King, Madeleine Albright, Lauryn Hill or Mia Hamm. In an era when looking out for one another and taking the high road is too often forgotten in the quest for wealth and popularity, authors Noelle Cleary and Dini von Mueffling saw the need for a new and modern standard of behavior for women-a standard that takes into account our independence, our new challenges, and our evolving attitudes toward sex, work, and our places in the world.

One part Miss Manners, another part Xena Warrior Princess, today's lady is kind and considerate without being a doormat. She speaks up for what she believes in without being a bully. She is sexy without being vulgar. She has great style but is never superficial. She gives back without asking for kudos. The Art and Power of Being a Lady addresses a wide range of circumstances and subjects-from modern manners to romance, friendship, style, social responsibility and the workplace-with humor and a keen eye to the real challenges women face today. Any woman who can juggle all that and achieve that graceful balance deserves a moniker worthy of her efforts. From now on, that word is lady.

building a tenuous bridge 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As if we needed more proof of the very existence of feminism - and how it has been interpreted through the mainstream culture - Deborah Seigel has handed us a history lesson wrapped in a hot pink love letter. In her nonfiction book, Sisterhood Interrupted, Seigel imparts that not only has feminism had its mis-steps, it's fallen clear away from its foundation. But maybe that foundation needs a shake.

Don't misunderstand me: Seigel's words aren't an attack on the "f-word." Rather, she's building that tenuous bridge between the young and seemingly unmotivated, feminists and their burnt-out mothers. As a 26-year-old, self-identified woman in America, I can look around and see where the American feminist movement has failed my generation more than I can see it's successes, at times. And that's where Seigel makes her best historical point. I, with all my privilege, have the power of choice based on the historical outcomes of the movement. And I have feminists - past and present - to thank for that choice.

Sisterhood Interrupted is a quick and exciting read; Seigel exposes knowledge on where (and why) the movement split, between the more highly profiled Betty Freidan and Gloria Steinem, as well as the justification for retiring some words, like, "sisterhood." "But now I realize that sisterhood is phony. Even when there's consensus, there isn't," says Amy Richards, co-author of ManifestA, in a conversation with Seigel. "I think younger women have a better sense that it is a big façade." This 'façade' is not a backlash, or an attempt to dis-empower feminism, it's just a reality of the movement. We're not sisters based on gender alone or simply based on feminist history. I believe opening the discussion to a few things that have been deemed `sacred' isn't such a terrible thing at all.

Editorial Review:

Contrary to clichés about the end of feminism, Deborah Siegel argues that younger women are reliving the battles of its past, and reinventing it--with a vengeance. From feminist blogging to the popularity of the WNBA, girl culture is on the rise. A lively and compelling look back at the framing of one of the most contentious social movements of our time, Sisterhood, Interrupted exposes the key issues still at stake, outlining how a twenty-first century feminist can reconcile the personal with the political and combat long-standing inequalities that continue today.

Pathway to Purpose review 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is one of the most significant books I've read in awhile in regard to helping me honestly evaluated God's place in my life and my own motivations for serving Him and relating to others. This book makes me feel like I want to sit with the author and discuss at length the concepts she brings forth in her book. Ms Brazelton must be an awesome mentor.

Interesting 3 out of 5 stars.

I found this easy to listen to but not of much help to any pathway to purpose for me. It was interesting and did get some ideas from listening to it.

Facilitating growth 5 out of 5 stars.

Initially, I bought the Praying for Purpose book to infuse my daily quiet time (plus it was on sale). I was enjoying Praying for Purpose so much that I decided to take the advice at the front of the book and read Pathway to Purpose as the foundational book. Significant time elapsed between my buying the book and actually reading it--mainly because the longer chapters were daunting when combined with my hectic schedule. Nevertheless, I knew I need to really delve into it because I am at a watershed period in my life. Well, once I began reading I was drawn into the contents. I was particularly struck by the author's relation of her own story. She writes with strategic candor--sharing vignettes of her life with precise relativity to the principle being shared. I was not able to fully relate to the first 2 chapters but I appreciated their advance wisdom. I am still working my way through both books because ever so often I stumble on something that takes me a few days to "soak in." Nevertheless, I've enjoyed Pathway to Purpose so much, I bought copies for each of my Women's Ministry Coucil members. I would totally recommend it!!!!!

An Anthology With Every Angle 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This book has Wollstonecraft's A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN and a through Background, Debate and Criticism section. This book gives one everything needed to understand Wollstonecraft's personality strenghths and weaknesses according to authors from her time; a complete debate on the subject of women's rights from multiple authors (from different time periods); and an intense review by serveral other authors (within the last 25 years) on Wollstonecraft's success/failure. Every article in the book has been published independently of this book. This work also contains several journal articles.

Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A passionate document in eloquent prose. Mary Wollstonecraft was a terrific polemicist and this is her most brilliant work, a deeply moving diatribe against the repression of women. I dare any man to read it and remain unmoved! This is a true classic.

Editorial Review:

This second edition offers the best in Wollstonecraft scholarship and criticism since 1976, providing the ideal means for studying the first feminist document in English.

Editorial Review:

Rarely do science and literature come together in the same book.  When they do -- as in Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, for example -- they become classics, quoted and studied by scholars and the general public alike.

Margaret Mead accomplished this remarkable feat not once but several times, beginning with Coming of Age in Samoa.   It details her historic journey to American Samoa, taken where she was just twenty-three, where she did her first fieldwork.  Here, for the first time, she presented to the public the idea that the individual experience of developmental stages could be shaped by cultural demands and expectations.  Adolescence, she wrote, might be more or less stormy, and sexual development more or less problematic in different cultures.  The "civilized" world, she taught us had much to learn from the "primitive."  Now this groundbreaking, beautifully written work as been reissued for the centennial of her birth, featuring introductions by Mary Pipher and by Mead's daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson.

Great resource for undergraduates and graduates 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This collection of writings from the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome focus on women's lives. However, do not buy this thinking you are getting women's views, that is rare in the record. Well organized and well cited, it provides an excellent teaching aid to the professor and a quick reference to scholars and laypersons. It is best used in an introductory history class or a women's studies class. Could be difficult to understand without basic background materials.

Editorial Review:

This highly acclaimed collection provides a unique look into the public and private lives and legal status of Greek and Roman women of all social classes-from wet nurses, prostitutes, and gladiatrixes to poets, musicians, intellectuals, priestesses, and housewives. The third edition adds new texts to sections throughout the book, vividly describing women's sentiments and circumstances through readings on love, bereavement, and friendship, as well as property rights, breast cancer, female circumcision, and women's roles in ancient religions, including Christianity and pagan cults.

Editorial Review:

In the wake of Sassy and as an alternative to the more staid reporting of Ms., Bitch was launched in the mid-nineties as a Xerox-and-staple zine covering the landscape of popular culture from a feminist perspective. Both unabashed in its love for the guilty pleasures of consumer culture and deeply thoughtful about the way the pop landscape reflects and impacts women’s lives, Bitch grew to be a popular, full-scale magazine with a readership that stretched worldwide. Today it stands as a touchstone of hip, young feminist thought, looking with both wit and irreverence at the way pop culture informs feminism—and vice versa—and encouraging readers to think critically about the messages lurking behind our favorite television shows, movies, music, books, blogs, and the like. BITCHFest offers an assortment of the most provocative essays, reporting, rants, and raves from the magazine’s first ten years, along with new pieces written especially for the collection. Smart, nuanced, cranky, outrageous, and clear-eyed, the anthology covers everything from a 1996 celebration of pre-scandal Martha Stewart to a more recent critical look at the "gayby boom"; from a time line of black women on sitcoms to an analysis of fat suits as the new blackface; from an attempt to fashion a feminist vulgarity to a reclamation of female virginity. It’s a recent history of feminist pop-culture critique and an arrow toward feminism’s future.
