Review of Julian Orr's "Talking about Machines" 2 out of 5 stars.

Heralded as a book which demonstrates "an uncompromising ethnographic eye on work practices (1996:xiv)", Talking about Machines by Julian Orr does not live up to its advertising. While being thorough (overly so) in his explanations of the "interactions" of technicians who travel to clients throughout Silicon Valley, he is sadly lacking in providing the ehtnography he claims to be striving towards. The pedantic, tedious, and painful blow-by-blow description of every conversation within the group he follows as an "anthropologist" is overdone, and the "vignettes" which follow are lacking in ethnographical explanation and style. While Julian Orr's initial intentions and the foreword was written in an intrigueing manner, he did not live up to it in the rest of the book. In the beginning, he spoke of looking closely at the interactions of the group of people who go around as mobile technicians to problem solve machines at companies in Silicon Valley. He wrote that he was interested in looking at the interactions of the technicians in relation to the high tech environment, and that he would focus on the "triangle" of the technician, the customer, and machines. He did indeed go very much into detail of the technician's interactions, but too much so without enough perspective or insight. I do not feel as though I gained a better understanding of their work environment, the machines, or their relationship. In fact, most of the time the conversations he relayed in the book almost action by action seemed to be a long litany of complaints the technicians had. For a reader interested in the very detailed (and not particularly ethnographic) commentary on technicians, this book might be of interest. For someone expecting something with a bit more soul, go elsewhere. While I believe the book had great potential in using the case studies and vignettes to illustrate interrelationships and relationships, it unfortunately did not live up to my expectations in that area.

Editorial Review:

As middle-class Chinese women have entered the Hong Kong work force in unprecedented numbers over the past two decades, the demand for foreign domestic workers has soared. Approximately 150,000 individuals now serve on two-year contracts, and the vast majority are women from the Philippines. Nicole Constable tells their story. Interweaving her analysis with anecdotal evidence collected in interviews with individual domestic workers, she shows how power is expressed in the day-to-day lives of Filipina domestic workers. Filipina guest workers flooding into Hong Kong are implicitly compared to Chinese domestic workers and found wanting. Local, cultural, and historical factors influence their treatment, as do preconceptions about gender, ethnicity, and class. Constable explains how domestic workers are controlled and disciplined by employment agencies, by employers themselves, and by state policies such as the rule against working for more than one employer. The forms of discipline range from physical abuse to intrusive regulations including restrictions on hair length and the prohibition of lipstick. Filipina workers resist oppression through legal action and political protests, through their use of household or public space, and through less confrontational means such as jokes and pranks. Some find real satisfaction in their work, Constable says, and she warns against any simplistic characterization of domestic workers as either empowered or oppressed, class-conscious or unaware.

Editorial Review:

Work/Family Conflicts describes a "social earthquake" which, without our knowledge, is changing the fiber of our lives. Conflicts inherent to complex work/family issues are being felt within and among three sectors: the family, the corporation, and society at large. These conflicts deny easy solutions and are aggravated as they bump up against social, economic, and cultural realities. According to Bradley Googins, all three sectors must ultimately appreciate their roles in the conflicts and accept some responsibility for resolving them. He focuses on the roles played by society and families and stresses the need to ignore simplistic solutions. He looks instead toward creative understandings, new partnerships, and the "courage to confront dysfunctional structures, attitudes, and social arrangements." The ultimate goal is healthy and productive families and workplaces. Googins divides his volume into ten chapters. His first chapter provides an overview reflecting the magnitude of the issues. He then outlines a framework--examining issues at four levels: individuals, families, corporations, and governments. Salient changes, conflicts, and impacts are discussed at each level. Chapter three analyzes the development of work/family relationships over several centuries. Googins presents the findings of the Boston University Balancing Job and Homelife Study in chapter four. This study provides his research base. Viewing work/family conflicts from the perspective of today's families, chapter five looks at family members while chapter six and seven cover childcare and elder dependent care. Chapter eight identifies society's "megaconflicts," chapter nine outlines the types of initiatives which have begun in response to these conflicts. A final chapter takes a look at the challenges and possibilities ahead of us.
