An unseen weapon that drives men mad. A green gas which turns smiling faces into leering skulls. A master criminal who can assume at will any known identity. Add to these separate menaces three big-game hunters sworn to destroy the Spider - and you have a situation in which the brilliance and courage of Dick Wentworth will thrill you as never before!

The Spider Strikes! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A fun Spider tale that I have had the pleasure of adapting for a graphic novel for Moonstone Publications. Plenty of action in the traditional Spider mold as he hunts down a murdering "ghost." Nice interaction from Nita van Sloan, The Master of Men's paramour, too.

Editorial Review:

An unseen weapon that drives men mad . . . A green gas which turns smiling faces into leering skulls . . . A master criminal who can assume at will any known identity . . . Add to these separate menaces three big-game hunters sworn to destroy the Spider -- and you have a situation in which the brilliance and courage of Dick Wentworth will thrill you as never before! At the merest whim of Crime's new overlord, citizens writhe in baffling, agonizing death! Wholesale threatened, officials threw up their hands in failure! Could the Spider, himself grievously wounded and trapped, remove the scarlet stigma attached to America's proud symbol of Freedom - The Statue of Liberty?

The Jury is Out -- Permanently ! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The verdict in New York City is "Not Guilty!" Any judge and jury that doesn't see it that way will meet quick death at the hands of "The Sign of the Scar". Naturally, THE SPIDER stops them. This one is worth it for the great illustration of THE SPIDER rising up out of a coffin to gun down the bad guys.

Big-time Asian money-men seek to buy into the American political system for their own nefarious purposes. No, it isn't another Al Gore fund-raiser -- it's THE SPIDER battling the Cult of the Cobra, with the fate of the nation at stake.

And the winner, for worst SPIDER title - the envelope please 4 out of 5 stars.

With a title this bad, you know the story has to be good. THE SPIDER is out-of-town fighting bad guys again, with the usual twists and turns to the plot, and two bonus short stories from the 1930's to boot.

The SPIDER is Doomed! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Things look bad for Richard Wentworth. The Living Pharaoh, Tang-akhmut, controls the police force. Wentworth's millions are gone, his best friend is accused of murder, his trusted servant is tortured, his girl friend is kidnapped, and there's a $100,000 dead-or-alive price on his head. The SPIDER is about as popular in New York City as John Rocker.

But this is just a normal day at the office for Richard Wentworth. As the SPIDER, he naturally rises magnificently to the occasion. He struggles mightily, and with the help of some unlikely allies, saves the day. In a pulp series known for slam-bang action, this story stands out -- the entire adventure takes place in a single "dreadful" night.

"City of Dreadful Night" is part of the SPIDER "Living Pharaoh" mini-series, and it marks the SPIDER debut of author Emile C. Tepperman, who took over writing the series in mid-cliffhanger.

This is the series that raised the bar for pulp fiction reprints -- a quality bound publication, with the original cover, interior art, and pulp short stories featured in the November, 1936 issue of THE SPIDER.

Editorial Review:

8.5 x 11 inches soft cover trade paperback.

A series designed to reprint all 119 of The SPIDER novels along with their digitally restored covers and the original interior illustrations from the pulp magazines of the 1930's-1940's.

In a world of nightmares, you don't want a hero that shoots webs-you need a hero that shoots FIRST!

Super Reader 4 out of 5 stars.

The Spider vs Bat Man.

This one isn't trying to strike fear and terror into the hearts of criminals, either, but quite the reverse.

He is using bats with poisoned sharp bits to slaughter hundreds of innocents in his own crazy crusade against the USA.

The Spider needs help in this one, as he cannot fly on his own like the Bat Man, and a pilot steps up to help, along with the usual crew.

The Spider realises he might have to give the whole flying bat thing a go himself before this is over.

What next? 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First they destroy his good name. Then they turn his friends against him. Then they take the millions. Then they kidnap his girl. They even take the penthouse apartment. But all this doesn't make THE SPIDER mad. Because THE SPIDER doesn't get mad; he gets even. Weather Forecast: Bad Times for Bad Guys!

Adventures of a great pulp hero 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

While the Spider has often been compared to the Shadow, he was really more like the now forgotten "Operator Number Five", or perhaps even Doc Savage, an adventurer, not a detective, literally a crime FIGHTER: The Spider didn't bring criminals to justice. He hunted impossibly wierd super criminals and killed them. Lots of them. The books are savage, colorful, and strangely enough, in Norvell Page's hands, far better written than most of the pulp novels of the day (as good or better than William Gibson's Shadow novels)

However, Amazon.com has mistakenly listed the contents of most of these Carrol and Graff reprints. Volume one contains THE SECRET CITY OF CRIME and THE SPIDER AND THE PAIN MASTER, Volume three, DEATH'S CRIMSON JUGGERNAUT and THE RED DEATH RAIN, four, DEATH REIGN OF THE VAMPIRE KING and THE PAIN EMPEROR, five, JUDGEMENT OF THE DAMNED and MASTER OF THE FLAMING HORDE, while six contains the two listed on most of these pages, SLAVES OF THE LAUGHING DEATH and SATAN'S MURDER MACHINES

Editorial Review:

First introduced in 1933, the great action hero returns in two explosive adventures. In The Devil's Paymaster, a vicious gang led by a ghost causes a series of ghastly murders. In Legions of the Accursed Light, a trail of scorched earth sets The Spider on the warpath against a criminal horde bound for Gotham.

Something A Little Different...... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

THE SPIDER is noted for slam-bang action. In this adventure, the action is there, as always, but there's a real mystery to the plot as well. Very interesting to see how THE SPIDER works his way through the confined-aboard-a-ship plot device.
