Editorial Review:

Within the effective format of a nontechnical case study, Life in the Pueblo provides an understanding of the basic methodologies in modern archaeology, including the formation of archaeological sites, dating, the role of ethnographic analogy, and analytic techniques like trace element sourcing, use-wear analysis, and carbon isotope determinations of diet. The archaeological interpretations are put into perspective by the inclusion of Hope and Zuni history and myth and the liberal use of ethnographic information from the Hopi and other historic and modern puebloan groups. A short fictional reconstruction of life in the village invites the reader to reflect on the fact that the past was a period occupied by people, not just potsherds. Based on four years of excavation and ten years of analysis of a puebloan site near modern Flagstaff, Arizona, this profusely illustrated volume captures readers' interest and imagination as it explores some of the fundamental principles of archaeology.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The book is a wonderful resource for the beginer archaeologist. It explains all the terms, tools, and tricks of the trade. It also has a wonderful list of places you can go to dig and companies that will help place you. The only issue I have with it is that it is 9 years old...a newer, updated book would be great because the listings of digs would be updated. Nice photos and diagrams...written with a sense of humor

Editorial Review:

Written expressly for amateur archaeologists and archaeological volunteers to help them discover how they can become part of this increasingly popular field. Covers subjects ranging from excavation techniques, tools, site locations, archaeological methods, archaeology and the law to conducting your own dig. Besides providing extensive data on gaining experience as volunteers of professionally organized digs, it offers an extensive resource section that includes archaeology organizations, field schools and sites, archaeological musems and a bibliography of reading matter which deals with archaeology. A large variety of line-drawings and photographs also assist the would-be archaeologist.

Editorial Review:

The Secrets Vaults of Time is a fascinating look at the best psychics and remote viewers of the 20th century, including Edgar Cayce and George McMullen, and their impressive contributions to science, in particular the advancement of archaeology. Schwartz uncovers never-before-detailed background on some of the most important digs of the past 100 years, including the recovery of Glastonbury Abbey—known as both the legendary Avalon of King Arthur and the birthplace of Christianity in England. The 12th title in Hampton Roads’ Studies in Consciousness line, The Secrets Vaults of Time was originally published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1978 (ISBN 0448127172) and hailed by Publishers Weekly as "compelling and cogent . . .new evidence that the thinking and writing on things psychic has attained a maturity that commands the most serious attention." Stephan Schwartz is the former research director of the Mobius Society, as well as a founder and past president of the Society of the Anthropology of Consciousness.

Editorial Review:

Many anthropologists and even some archeologists have asked "Why excavate skeletons? What information can we gain to merit the disturbance of human interments?" "Human Skeletal Remains" answers such questions. Douglas H. Ubelaker demonstrates the range of data and interpretations potentially obtainable from human skeletal remains and shows how this information can contribute to the solution of various anthropological problems. It also describes and evaluates basic techniques of skeletal excavation and analysis."Human Skeletal Remains" is divided into two sections. The first section reviews the techniques and information needed for excavating and describing skeletal remains and for achieving reliable estimates of stature, sex, and age at death. These chapters should improve the capacity of non-specialists to undertake skeletal excavation and preliminary analysis. The second section discusses additional kinds of information that can be gleaned from suitable samples by experienced skeletal biologists. The information in Human Skeletal Remains is a broadscale overview and many aspects have been treated in greater detail by others elsewhere. References are provided in the text for the convenience of those interested in more information on specific topics. Technical terminology has been avoided where possible, but accurate recording and description cannot be accomplished without employing the names of individual bones and other skeletal landmarks. Terms most commonly needed for description are included in a Glossary. While it is somewhat modest in its intentions, this analysis provides a clarity that extensive tomes cannot supply.

A must have for all students and lovers of archaeology! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Next Archaeology Workbook is a great educational tool for students and anyone interested in archaeology. Are you sick of talking about archaeology as an abstract concept? Then this book is for you. The book includes an number of fictionalized archaeological problems situated all over the world. Answering these questions educates and entertains. This is how learning should be

Editorial Review:

This volume features exercises that allow students to use their knowledge of archaeological method and theory to deal with fictitious scenarios and data sets. The authors offer all new, inventive, and often witty problems that pose the same questions being tackled by archaeologists in the field today.

Editorial Review:

In 1944 the RAF undertook a remarkable aerial survey of the British Isles. Taking photographs from a low flying Spitfire they mapped the whole of the United Kingdom. Here, published for the first time, are a selection of these incredible photographs. Focusing on London, they show the havoc wreaked by the Luftwaffe on the buildings of the capital. Just as remarkable are the contemporary shots, taken by English Heritage's own aerial photographer, Damien Grady, who by flying at the same height in a helicopter, has managed to replicate each view exactly as it looks in 2006.

The book is laid out with the 1944 shot on one side of the page and the modern equivalent on the other. We see the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf reduced to rubble in 1944, compared with the shimmering metal and glass towers of today. At the other end of the city is Heathrow, still a grassy field dotted with a few military planes in 1944, unrecognisable compared with today's sprawling international airport.

The 1944 shots show remarkable detail - factories with their roofs camouflaged to escape the attention of the German bombers, Hyde Park turned into allotments, even the details of films showing in Leicester Square.

A little too advanced for my intro students 2 out of 5 stars.

There are only 1 or 2 useable activities in this book for a 100 level arch class.

Editorial Review:

Fills a significant gap in the training of archaeologists by supplying a set of inventive, often witty, fictionalized problems in archaeological research.

Editorial Review:

Designed as a supplement to introductory texts in archaeology, this reader offers selections from scholarly journals and books as well as from semi-scientific periodicals and the popular press. Readings are chosen based on their ability to stimulate student interest, correlate with core material taught in introductory courses, and introduce students to the diversity of archaeological literature in all its major forms.

Reading Archaeology pairs well with Muckle's core text, Introducing Archaeology, which uses the same thematic organization, but can easily be used with any other introductory archaeology text. The collection has a stronger focus on scholarly readings (and less on the popular press) than competing readers.

Some comments from the senior author 4 out of 5 stars.
32 of 35 people found this review helpful.

The three recent comments on FIELD METHODS, 7th ed. need some clarification. Yes, the book is long, very long. I didn't know we had any statistics in it (reviewer #1)! It is not comparable to Joukowsky, as her book, like our 6th ed., Hester, et al. l975, is now badly out of date. The 7th ed., l997, is designed as (l) a text, especially for field schools (2) a reference on contemporary approaches to field archaeology. It is not a trade book, especially since Mayfield does not discount to bookstores. The long-winded aspect comes from an effort to review contemporary archaeology, which is changing rapidly and covers a broad area of inquiry. The academic review cards received by Mayfield after publication were overwhelmingly positive. Thus, the book appeals largely to professionals and active avocational archaeologists. It is not a "light read" on the glorious discoveries of archaeology.

Editorial Review:

This highly regarded comprehensive guide provides an up-to-date overview of the variety of methods used in field archaeology, from research design to excavation strategies to conservation of artifacts and record-keeping. The contributors to the volume bring a wealth of expertise on diverse subjects and offer practical advice on their areas of special interest.
