The Fall of Rogue Gerrard by Stephanie Laurens

Lydia Makepeace needs to infiltrate the home of Lord Alconbury in order to retrieve a letter her sister had written. Problem is that Lord Alconbury has several guests and nightly orgies that do not end until past dawn. After scoping out Alconbury's home one evening, Lydia returns to the inn and is shocked to see Lord Gerrard "Ro". Perhaps Lydia can get a bit of help. **** A bit of adventure with this romance - and who would not enjoy that? ****

Spellbound by Mary Balogh

Long ago Nora Ryder had been the daughter of a gentleman of vast wealth and political influence. Richard had been her father's secretary. Now their situation has reversed. Richard Kemp is a baron and Nora is penniless. Having recently left a position, unpaid, she has no choice but to return to her brother's home until she can find new employment. Unfortunately, the stagecoach she was to travel on has collided with a gentleman's vehicle. Richard's. Will her heart survive seeing him again? **** To tell more of the couple's background would spoil the fun. Rest assured that the story is well done with an interesting twist or two. ****

Only You by Jacquie D'Alessandro

Ten years ago Cassie became Countess Westmore. In doing so she left her only friend, Ethan, behind and entered purgatory. Now a widow, Cassie returns to Cornwall. Ethan now owns and operates the Blue Seas Inn in St. Ives. Before returning to her parents, Cassie decides to spend one evening at the inn. Perhaps he will be there. **** Pure romance that left me with a warm glow. The story is spiced in a way that only Jacquie D'Alessandro can do. ****

From This Moment On by Candice Hern

She had been plain Wilma Jepp at one time. He had been plain Samuel Pellow. She thought he was dead. Instead Sam had gone into the navy - unwillingly. When her mother tossed her out, Wilma did the only thing she could do to survive. She became a mistress. Today she is the Duchess of Herford, widowed for over three years. Samuel is a retired blockade captain. Fate brings them together at an inn one stormy day and Destiny will do her best to keep them that way. **** This romance moves at a slower pace than the previous ones. It is mostly two people reminiscing about the hard choices each made in their past. The author has added some humor to keep things light and she has done it in a very sneaky way. ****

Editorial Review:

It Happened One Night . . . and nothing was ever the same again!

Once upon a time, four superstar storytellers—New York Times bestselling authors Stephanie Laurens and Mary Balogh, along with Jacquie D'Alessandro and Candice Hern—came up with a delicious idea. What if they each wrote a story about a proper young lady stranded at a remote inn away from society's constraints? What would happen? And how long would it take for her to give in to desire?

In these four amazing tales, four heroines will come face-to-face with the men who got away . . . only to discover that, instead of anger, there is still a passionate connection that cannot be denied. And while each of their lives is quite different, and their pasts utterly unique, they will all make a common discovery—that one night can change everything . . . forever.

“The Sith always betray one another. . . . I’m sure you’ll learn that soon enough.”

The overthrow of the Republic is complete. The Separatist forces have been smashed, the Jedi Council nearly decimated, and the rest of the Order all but destroyed. Now absolute power rests in the iron fist of Darth Sidious–the cunning Sith lord better known as the former Senator, now Emperor, Palpatine. But more remains to be done. Pockets of resistance in the galaxy must still be defeated and missing Jedi accounted for . . . and dealt with. These crucial tasks fall to the Emperor’s ruthless enforcer, Darth Vader. In turn, the Dark Lord has groomed a lethal apprentice entrusted with a top-secret mission: to comb the galaxy and dispatch the last of his masters’ enemies, thereby punctuating the dark side’s victory with the Jedi’s doom.

Since childhood, Vader’s nameless agent has known only the cold, mercenary creed of the Sith. His past is a void; his present, the carrying out of his deadly orders. But his future beckons like a glistening black jewel with the ultimate promise: to stand beside the only father he has ever known, with the galaxy at their feet. It is a destiny he can realize only by rising to the greatest challenge of his discipleship: destroying Emperor Palpatine.

The apprentice’s journeys will take him across the far reaches of the galaxy, from the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk to the junkyard planet of Raxus Prime. On these missions, the young Sith acolyte will forge an unlikely alliance with a ruined Jedi Master seeking redemption and wrestle with forbidden feelings for his beautiful comrade, Juno Eclipse. And he will be tested as never before–by shattering revelations that strike at the very heart of all he believes and stir within him long-forgotten hopes of reclaiming his name . . . and changing his destiny.

A Disappointing Book 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Keri Arthur writes the kind of books that I have to read in one sitting. And I like to revisit them. I don't get tired of reading them.

Destiny Kills is her latest book, a foray into a different urban fantasy series, this one about sea dragons. Think Loch Ness. Destiny is a sea dragon who can assume human form. She's just escaped from a lab that's been experimenting on her and her family and is running for her life. She meets up with the required male for the romantic element of the story.

I wish I could say it lived up to the Riley books. It had a slow and confusing opening, and I had trouble getting past the first couple of chapters. Nearly a hundred pages passed before it started to get into the story. The characters literally spend most of the novel running from place to place while bits and pieces of Destiny's life laboriously unfolds. There's a stone that's supposed to be an important bargaining chip in the story, and then hardly anything gets done with it. Despite all the chasing around and some action, the pacing was surprisingly slow and often flat.

A disappointing read from an author I like.

Fabulous! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I love the Sevenwaters trilogy, and this is a wonderful addition. If you have not read the other three books- Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1), Son of the Shadows (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 2),and Child of the Prophecy (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 3), you can still enjoy this book. If however you are a fan of the trilogy, this is like a warm homecoming! I re-read the trilogy to remind myself of the story arc before I read Heir to Sevenwaters.

The plot has been summarized in the previous reviews, so I will not repeat it. However here are my thoughts. Most of this will make more sense if you have read the previous three books, because I use them as a frame of reference to compare this book.

Clodagh: What a wonderful heroine! She is ordinary with no special abilities(except to mind talk to her twin Diedre) unlike Liadin from Son of.. and Fainne from Child of... I think this makes her more endearing. She is my favorite heroine second only to Sorcha from Daughter.. What makes her special is that she is not brave or heroic but manages to overcome her fear to do what she must do to save her brother, her parents and her beloved.

The Love Story: Again this was my favorite romance second to Sorcha and Red from Daughter of... In fact I think is book is heavier on the romance than the previous two. Clodagh and her love interest are together for most of the book, and I loved their interactions. Fainne and Darragh from Child of.. and Liadin and Bran in Son of... had very fews scenes togther.

Tone: The book was much lighter in tone than Child of Prophecy, which was quite dark with a sense of doom. Perhaps because the romance was so heaviliy emphasized, it felt much lighter and more cheerful. I think this was a plus.

Selfless love: In the end I think all the Sevenwaters books stress the concept of selfless love for family and for your beloved. This book is no different and it is what lends such a warm and magical feel to the story.

Favorite chracters back again: Sean, Conner, Ciaran, Johnny are all back. Liadin is mentioned in passing. She was my least favorite heroine, so I did not miss her presence. I loved that the author brought Ciarin back. There is a shocker revelation about Johnny! Also their is a nice family tree in the front which is helpful.

New villian: With the Islands back with the Fair Folk through Fainne's sacrifice in Child of.., we need a new villian, and we get a great one: the Fey Lord Mac Dara. The ending leaves it open for more books to come because the conflict with him is not resolved. Hopefully we will get a new book, maybe with Eilis' story next!

If you love fantasy, romance and a heroine centered story you will love this book. If you are already a fan of the Sevenwaters series, this is a must buy.

Editorial Review:

A brand new novel in the beloved world of Sevenwaters—a fantasy series that “should appeal to Lord of the Rings fans” (VOYA).

The chieftains of Sevenwaters have long been custodians of a vast and mysterious forest. Human and Otherworld dwellers have existed there side by side, sharing a wary trust. Until the spring when Lady Aisling of Sevenwaters finds herself expecting another child—a new heir to Sevenwaters.

Then the family’s joy turns to despair when the baby is taken from his room and something...unnatural is left in his place. To reclaim her newborn brother, Clodagh must enter the shadowy Otherworld and confront the powerful prince who rules there.

Editorial Review:

In a novel that is at once intense, beautiful, and fablelike, Lloyd Jones weaves a transcendent story that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the power of narrative to transform our lives.

On a copper-rich tropical island shattered by war, where the teachers have fled with most everyone else, only one white man chooses to stay behind: the eccentric Mr. Watts, object of much curiosity and scorn, who sweeps out the ruined schoolhouse and begins to read to the children each day from Charles Dickens’s classic Great Expectations.

So begins this rare, original story about the abiding strength that imagination, once ignited, can provide. As artillery echoes in the mountains, thirteen-year-old Matilda and her peers are riveted by the adventures of a young orphan named Pip in a city called London, a city whose contours soon become more real than their own blighted landscape. As Mr. Watts says, “A person entranced by a book simply forgets to breathe.” Soon come the rest of the villagers, initially threatened, finally inspired to share tales of their own that bring alive the rich mythology of their past. But in a ravaged place where even children are forced to live by their wits and daily survival is the only objective, imagination can be a dangerous thing.

Enchanting Fiction 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Morton is a gifted storyteller. This is a gently paced, softly told story which takes place primarily in the decades surrounding the first world war. In this story a ninety eight year old grandmother, Grace, recollects the events of her youth. She tapes these recollections as a gift for her missing grandson. As the story begins, we are on the cusp of the first world war. Grace enters into service at the great house, Riverton, where her mother was in service years before. (Grace has been assured by her mother that the family will accept her.) As the story progresses Grace becomes enthralled with the family, becoming particularly enamored with the eldest daughter of the Hartford family, Hannah.

On one level this story is a mystery, early in the story we are told that one night, in the midst of a family celebration, a young poet took his life in front of the two daughters of the home. One daughter was the poet's fiancee, the other his alleged lover. To this day no one knows exactly what happened to cause this tragedy, only that it destroyed the family forever.

On another level this is a story about the end of the Edwardian era of aristocratic privilege. This was a time when the role of women expanded, the class system came under attack and foundation of English society shifted.

The author deftly tells Grace's and England's story and what a wonderful story it is.

Editorial Review:

Amazon Best of the Month, April 2008: In her cinematic debut novel, Kate Morton immerses readers in the dramas of the Ashbury family at their crumbling English country estate in the years surrounding World War I, an age when Edwardian civility, shaken by war, unravels into the roaring Twenties. Grace came to serve in the house as a girl. She left as a young woman, after the presumed suicide of a famous young poet at the property's lake. Though she has dutifully kept the family's secrets for decades, memories flood back in the twilight of her life when a young filmmaker comes calling with questions about how the poet really died--and why the Ashbury sisters never again spoke to each other afterward. With beautifully crafted prose, Morton methodically reveals how passion and fate transpired that night at the lake, with truly shocking results. Her final revelation at the story's close packs a satisfying (and not overly sentimental) emotional punch. --Mari Malcolm

Editorial Review:

A stunningly inventive, deeply moving fiction debut: stories that take us from the slums of Colombia to the streets of Tehran; from New York City to Iowa City; from a tiny fishing village in Australia to a foundering vessel in the South China Sea, in a masterly display of literary virtuosity and feeling.

In the magnificent opening story, “Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice,” a young writer is urged by his friends to mine his father’s experiences in Vietnam—and what seems at first a satire of turning one’s life into literary commerce becomes a transcendent exploration of homeland, and the ties between father and son. “Cartagena” provides a visceral glimpse of life in Colombia as it enters the mind of a fourteen-year-old hit man facing the ultimate test. In “Meeting Elise,” an aging New York painter mourns his body’s decline as he prepares to meet his daughter on the eve of her Carnegie Hall debut. And with graceful symmetry, the final, title story returns to Vietnam, to a fishing trawler crowded with refugees, where a young woman’s bond with a mother and her small son forces both women to a shattering decision.

Brilliant, daring, and demonstrating a jaw-dropping versatility of voice and point of view, The Boat is an extraordinary work of fiction that takes us to the heart of what it means to be human, and announces a writer of astonishing gifts.

Editorial Review:

Tim Winton is Australia’s best-loved novelist. His new work,Breath, is an extraordinary evocation of an adolescence spent resisting complacency, testing one’s limits against nature, finding like-minded souls, and discovering just how far one breath will take you. It’s a story of extremes—extreme sports and extreme emotions. On the wild, lonely coast of Western Australia, two thrillseeking and barely adolescent boys fall into the enigmatic thrall of veteran big-wave surfer Sando. Together they form an odd but elite trio. The grown man initiates the boys into a kind of Spartan ethos, a regimen of risk and challenge, where they test themselves in storm swells on remote and shark-infested reefs, pushing each other to the edges of endurance, courage, and sanity. But where is all this heading? Why is their mentor’s past such forbidden territory? And what can explain his American wife’s peculiar behavior? Venturing beyond all limits—in relationships, in physical challenge, and in sexual behavior—there is a point where oblivion is the only outcome. Full of Winton’s lyrical genius for conveying physical sensation, Breath is a rich and atmospheric coming-of-age tale from one of world literature’s finest storytellers.

More Addictive than Crack Cocaine 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After more than 40 years of reading, my selection for my favorite books ever are the "Rome" series of books by McCullough. The First Man in Rome is the beginning of this series, and may be my favorite book ever, although the Grass Crown, which is the second book in the series may be even better. It's painful to have to decide. The words compulsive and fascinating are simply too flat and characterless to do justice to this series. If I was ever stranded on a desert island with only one thing to read for the rest of my life it would be this series of novels, they are simply that good. One of my very real epiphanies in reading this was how similar the politics of Rome were to our politics today. I think anyone reading this will be similarly struck and it is not hard to envision dropping the Roman senate down in Washington and not seeing any real change in our daily lives. The headlines would all be the same, the debates as sharp, the slandering and pandering, the demonizations, and the partisanship and bickering would go on without the slightest flicker of disruption!

I first read these books about seven years ago, and then read them all over again last year when the last installment came out. After I finished reading them the second time I nearly started over again at the beginning for a third go round, but decided instead to go and read other works relating to Rome and some works of the ancients themselves, including Caesar and Cicero.

These novels cover the period of Rome from about 110 BC to roughly 40 BC, a period of great change and upheaval for the republic that eventually led to the empire (sounds a bit like the star wars series, doesn't it? I think George cribbed a lot of notes from Roman history). This first novel deals with Gaius Marius and his rise to incredible power even though he was not one of Rome's "inner circle of elite". Gaius was a military innovator and was responsible for some sweeping changes in the legions that improved their deadly efficacy and transformed the nature of what it meant to be a legionaire; from gentleman farmer to professional soldier. The new legion structure was actually similar in many respects to our military organization today.

This is a grand book, with characters that seem more alive and more real, than many flesh and blood people we deal with in our daily lives. The character development McCullough achieves is nothing short of mind-bending and indeed may make you a pickier reader in the future. I whole-heartedly recommend this book, and the entire series, to any reader. It is difficult to pick a favorite out of the series, and I don't think I could, but I really, really enjoyed this first novel as much as any of them.

One cautionary note, since some of my friends are ancient history buffs, is that while the known "facts" in McCullough's series are extremely accurate and she did an incredible amount of research for these books (will someone give her an honorary doctorate please?), people's personalities and their daily lives between the big, recorded facts of history are not as well established. I love McCullough's impression and interpretation and I think few could gainsay her much in her works. Her Caesar and Sulla though may get more favorable treatment from her than other commentators and novelists might elect to award. That, however is one of the greatest things about these books: after the compulsive reading is over comes the compulsive conversations, the debating with friends about this or that, and the further exploration of one of the most facinating periods in history.

Editorial Review:

With extraordinary narrative power, New York Times bestselling author Colleen McCullough sweeps the reader into a whirlpool of pageantry and passion, bringing to vivid life the most glorious epoch in human history.

When the world cowered before the legions of Rome, two extraordinary men dreamed of personal glory: the military genius and wealthy rural "upstart" Marius, and Sulla, penniless and debauched but of aristocratic birth. Men of exceptional vision, courage, cunning, and ruthless ambition, separately they faced the insurmountable opposition of powerful, vindictive foes. Yet allied they could answer the treachery of rivals, lovers, enemy generals, and senatorial vipers with intricate and merciless machinations of their own—to achieve in the end a bloody and splendid foretold destiny . . . and win the most coveted honor the Republic could bestow.
