Editorial Review:

For over three thousand years, Jewish law has been defending the human spirit from abuse by the powerful. This book's wide-ranging approach looks at Jewish law's proud record on a number of major human rights issues, from political tyranny to oppression of women to crime and poverty, demonstrating unique Torah insights for Western law and the modern world. Written by the new chief rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Warren Goldstein, Ph.D., Defending the Human Spirit discusses Jewish law's vision for a moral society in the context of real cases and not merely as abstract principles. Western law systems, specifically those of England, the United States and South Africa, are compared and contrasted with the Jewish legal system, showing that Divine and Divinely based Jewish law- Halachah- has always been ahead of its time in the arena of human rights- with Western law systems only just catching up in modern times. Readers will see how Jewish law weaves together the minuiae of detailed laws and the broader principles on which they are based to form a magnificent tapestry, through whcich society is transformed. Lawyers, law students, and all interested readers will discover the uniqueness of Judaism's approach to both law and ethics- how they are blended together to form the best possible system within which the human race can fully develop into the image of God.

Editorial Review:

A guide to how meditations and principles from the Kabbalah can be used to profoundly renew spiritual practice. * Reveals transformational meditations and visualization exercises based on the profoundest truths concealed in the Kabbalah.

The covenant that bound God to the Patriarchs in a special relationship of obligation and empowerment was renewed by God with Israel at Sinai and Moab. Each of these three Jewish covenants can be associated with a particular spiritual practice: the Patriarchal Covenant with Father Isaac's practice of meditation; The Sinai Covenant of Holiness with the observance of the Sabbath required in its Ten Commandments, and the Moab Covenant of Love, comprising the entire Mosaic Torah, with the practice of prayer instituted there. In Renewing the Covenant, Leonora Leet shows how this ladder of increasingly demanding and potent covenantal practices can enable one to ascend to ever higher levels of mystical Judaism.

At this threshold of a new millennium, increasing numbers of people are seeking a more direct connection with the Divine. To aid such a process, Renewing the Covenant provides new paths for entering the treasurehouse of Jewish spirituality and achieving higher consciousness, paths that can deepen the devotions of both nonobservant and traditionally observant Jews. This process of covenant renewal begins with effective kabbalistic techniques of meditation combining mantra with visualization, proceeds through the return to a reconstructed Sinai Sabbath, and arrives at the culminating practice of ritual prayer whose performance can fulfill the kabbalistic purpose of creation. When undertaken in the steps laid out by Dr. Leet, this process can help many to discover forms of spiritual practice precisely tailored for the modern world, as well as a new appreciation for the rich spiritual heritage of Judaism.

Editorial Review:

Demonstrates the cogency and inner rationality of the classical statement of Judaism in the Oral Torah, bringing together a theological assessment to bear on the whole of rabbinic literature. The author shows how the proposition that God is One and all-powerful but also merciful and just, defines the system and structure of rabbinic Judaism. He argues that in working this proposition out in detail, the classical texts generate the central rabbinic problem: how can the conflicting traits inherent in the proposition be resolved?

Editorial Review:

Here is a book of workable, sensible solutions to the everyday problems faced by newly observant Jews as they try to explain the parameters of their new lives to the people who love them—but think they’ve gone around the bend.

For the formerly nonobservant Jew who has decided to live an observant life, the most daunting task can be dealing with less-observant loved ones. How can you explain to them what you now feel and believe? How can you continue to be part of the lives of your parents, your siblings and their families, and your in-laws, given how differently you now live your life? In this book, Azriela Jaffe—the observant daughter of less-observant parents—answers these and other pressing questions.

Jaffe discusses how to eat kosher and observe the Sabbath and Jewish holidays in the home of a non-observant relative, and how to host nonobservant relatives in your own home; how to explain the laws of modesty and courtship practices; how to attend family life-cycle events—or explain why you sometimes can’t; and how to help your relatives understand the decision to put secular education temporarily aside to attend yeshivah and further your knowledge of Jewish law, rituals, and customs.

Eminently insightful, helpful, and readable, What Do You Mean, You Can’t Eat in My Home? will be an invaluable tool in the lives of an ever-increasing number of Jewish families.

Editorial Review:

Millions of Jewish and interfaith couples are struggling to deal with unique, myriad issues in order to achieve not only a positive Jewish identity, but also harmonious marriages. In addition to the challenges every modern couple confronts, Jews face specific cultural issues -- from internalized anti-Semitism and a broad diversity of cultural traditions to rapid assimilation and rampant intermarriage -- all of which profoundly influence their intimate relationships. This dynamic guide identifies their special issues and offers a proven method to help couples develop new insights, strengthen their communication skills, resolve conflicts, and deepen their intimacy. Drawing on traditional Jewish thinkers and texts as well as the widely successful, research-based Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP), this book provides new ways for couples to understand their personal, spiritual, and cultural differences. Each chapter offers case histories and innovative exercises focused on such issues as gender roles, work, raising children, religious practice, and intermarriage.

Excellent guide to Sephardic practice 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is a tremendous asset to anyone wishing to add Sephardic practice to his/her ritual or liturgical life. Dobrinsky has researched the practice of several communities and presents them logically by classification (Family Occasions, Daily Practice, Synagoge Worship, etc.). It is easy to check all of the citations for a certain Sephardic community or for a certain area of Jewish life. Highly recommended for researchers or Sephardic Jews looking to integrate new traditions into their lives.

reference guide, not a novel 4 out of 5 stars.

This is not the kind of book you just sit down and read cover to cover. It's more of a reference guide to sephardic customs and minhagim. As such, it's an invaluable tool for anyone with any interest in the subject. It's well organized, clearly written, and exhaustively researched. If you're looking for a veritable encyclopedia of sephardic knowledge, this is the place.

An excellent resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book was first published by Schocken in 1968, and remainsone of the best resources in English for understanding what Jewish Law has to say about birth control and abortion. It's not just a simplistic summary or a laundry list, either! The author explains, in step-by-step detail, the various laws and how they were derived from specific religious texts. Unfortunately, the current hardcover reprint is a bit pricey, to say the least. I'd really like to see a paperback reprint to make it more accessible to more people. Still, if this is your area of interest and you can't find a used copy, then a new one is well worth the price.

Chapter One gives an excellent overview of the structure of Jewish Law, explaining the various types of canonical documents -- Talmud, Rashi & Tosafot, Shulchan Arukh, responsa of later authorities, etc. -- which is a great help to readers who are not familiar with these important post-biblical Jewish sources and/or how Jewish Law works. The rest of the book explores, in clear detail with sources given, such things as Jewish attitudes toward sex, Talmudic references to birth control and abortion, debates about when the soul joins the body, etc., ending with a summary chapter, "The Jewish view on birth control." Where appropriate, the author also compares and contrasts Jewish beliefs with those of various Christian groups. Considering that abortion is such a hot topic in the USA right now, this book should be in the library of every group or individual who wants to understand the Jewish view(s) on this important subject.

Editorial Review:

An examination of the relevant precepts contained in classical Jewish texts and especially rabbinic responsa in order to present a comprehensive study of marital relations, contraception, and abortion.

Overview 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a very intense and enlightening book that covers tough subjects throughout the Old Testament. Though it is probably not for the average person, students of the Bible and especially the Old Testament will want to look at this book to gain further understanding from a great scholar in Old Testament studies. The author is a former professor of mine whom I learned much from and helped me to choose an Old Testament emphasis for my master's work. This book is detailed and can be used to topically search tough passages from the Old Testament Law. An excellent tie to the New Testament is done throughout the book as well.

Editorial Review:

This book approaches the laws of the Pentateuch from theological, historical, moral, and spiritual perspectives. Biblical Law and Its Relevance, while taking into consideration the approaches of Reformed, Dispensationalist, Lutheran, and Theonomist scholars, proposes a distinctive hermeneutic of seeking to find the abiding moral and religious principles inherent in the laws.

An excellent non-fundamentalist overview of Jewish law 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book examines biblical and rabbinic law as a coherent, continuing legal tradition. The authors are religious Jews, but non-fundamentalists.

The publisher writes that: "It explains the relationship between religion and law and the interaction between law and morality. Abundant selections from primary Jewish sources, many newly translated, enable the reader to address the tradition directly as a living body of law with emphasis on the concerns that are primary for lawyers, legislators, and judges. This book has a comprehensive study of how Jewish law is applied and how it has developed from the Torah, through the Mishna and Talmud, into today's era. The book studies in great detail the evolution of halakha, an compares it to its parallel development in American law. This is illustrated by mainly dealing with three issues: (1) personal injury law, (2) Smoking, and (3) Marriage and divorce. Each of these issues is compared to American law, and is studied from the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform point of view. 'A Living Tree' will be of special interest to students of law and to Jews curious about the legal dimensions of their tradition. The authors provide sufficient explanations of the sources and their significance to make it unnecessary for the reader to have a background in either Jewish studies or law. "

Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff is Provost and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Judaism, and is a member of the Conservative movement's Committe on Jewish Law and Standards. Arthur Rosett is Professor of Law at the University of California at Los Angeles.
