Editorial Review:

For courses in Inclusion/Mainstreaming or Introduction to Special Education. This successful and comprehensive, categorically-organized methods-based text examines how to teach all students with varying abilities in the same classroom. The Seventh Edition of Teaching Special Students in General Education Classrooms is uncompromising in its dedication to prepare educators to effectively teach the range of students found in the typical elementary or secondary classroom. Using a case-based approach, the text provides information about four groups of students with special needs: students with disabilities, gifted and talented learners, culturally and linguistically diverse individuals, and students at risk for school failure. In addition, it demonstrates the vast resources we now have available through technology, and presents practical strategies for adapting standard instruction to meet the learning needs of all students in general education classrooms. Furthermore, the reauthorization of IDEA is included, emphasizing for readers why this law is important and how it impacts educators and professionals. As the practice of inclusion expands, the challenges for teachers increase. Teaching Students in General Education Classrooms, 7th Edition is everything a future teacher needs to know in order to work effectively and sensitively within increasingly diverse elementary and secondary classrooms.

Outstanding resource for prechool therapists and teachers 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is a gem--just perfect for occupational therapists, parents or anyone working with special needs preschoolers. The book is organized by various diagnoses as well as specific learning situations found in most preschools-circle time, snack, various centers, etc. The numerous classroom adaptations suggested are outstanding. I work in Head Start preschools where the teachers have limited experience and training with special needs kids. I can't tell you how helpful this book has been.

Editorial Review:

All children require nurturing and stimulating learning environments, but typical early childhood classrooms should be modified for children with special needs. The Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom is written to help teachers look at classroom design in a new way and suggests different ways of approaching activities to help children with special needs become successful. By modifying the classroom and activities, all children will be actively engaged. Each chapter focuses on either a learning center, such as art or science, or a time of the day, such as snack time or dismissal, with particular attention to the needs of children who are developmentally delayed, orthopedically impaired, have autism/Pervasive Development Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, behavioral issues, motor planning problems, or visual impairments.

Editorial Review:

The Power of Inclusive Classrooms is a passionate, even radical argument for creating school and classroom environments where all kids, including children labeled as "disabled" and "special needs," are welcome on equal terms.

In opposition to traditional models of special education, where teachers decide when a child is deemed "ready to compete" in "mainstream" classes, Mara Sapon-Shevin articulates a vision of full inclusion as a practical and moral goal. Inclusion, she argues, begins not with the assumption that students have to earn their way into the classroom with their behavior or skills but with the right of every child to be in the mainstream of education, perhaps with modifications, adaptations, and support. Full inclusion requires teachers to think about all aspects of their classroom—pedagogy, curriculum, and classroom climate.

Crucially, Sapon-Shevin takes on arguments against full inclusion in a section of straight-talking answers to common questions. She agrees with critics that the rhetoric of inclusion has been used to justify eliminating services and "dumping" students with significant educational needs unceremoniously back into the mainstream with little or no support. If full inclusion is properly implemented, however, she argues, it not only clearly benefits those traditionally excluded but enhances the educations and lives of those considered mainstream in myriad ways.

Through storytelling and argument, Sapon-Shevin lays out the moral and educational case for schools that do not separate kids on the basis of difference.

"Widening the Circle is an ambitious, impassioned argument for inclusive schools powered by a vision that goes far beyond the mutilated version of 'mainstreaming' common in American schools today. To Sapon-Shevin the current state of affairs is a caricature of inclusive education, reductive and impoverished, a place where every student is defined by a putative deficit, imprisoned in a label. Her goal — breathtaking in its sweep — is to break through the walls of the prison, and to set us all free. She shows us that huge questions of democracy and freedom can be discovered in a simple game of musical chairs, that our deepest values are enacted in our everyday classroom practice. A dazzling manifesto and call to arms."
—William Ayers, author of Teaching toward Freedom and To Teach

"Widening the Circle is packed with sharply observed challenges to conventional ways of thinking. It digs beneath classroom strategies to find larger truths about difference, exposing the moral implications of segregation in the process. One by one, Sapon-Shevin skewers the philosophical and practical objections to inclusion. Her book should be read by all educators, not just those in the field of special education."
—Alfie Kohn, author of The Schools Our Children Deserve and What Does It Mean to Be Well Educated?

"I love the spirit that infuses the book and the constant reference to the connection between school values and larger democratic values, as well as its attention to the nitty-gritty of classroom life. A book both practical and thoughtful."
—Deborah Meier, author of The Power of Their Ideas

"With a profound vision and a gift for storytelling, Sapon-Shevin leads educators to think of social justice in terms of classrooms that are truly inclusive, and in the process, challenges and broadens the very ways that we think about inclusion: of whom, in what ways, for what purposes. Essential reading for all educators."
—Kevin K. Kumashiro, Director, Center for Anti-Oppressive Education

"This book is well-researched, well-argued, and well-written, with a passionate voice that supplements its views with personal anecdotes that make the book a compelling and enjoyable read." —Teacher Magazine

"There's a disarming, almost folksy quality to this easy to read book, and you find yourself getting stirred up by the common sense logic of how inclusion presents an opportunity to students without disabilities to get to know, support, and share experiences that will benefit them throughout their lives . . . We need more books like this one." —Teachers College Record

Helpful for educators AND parents 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As a parent of a 3 year old with Down syndrome, I found this book extremely helpful as Andrew moves toward inclusion in a private school. It is helpful for parents to become aware of inclusion issues and processes for their children's sake. This book provides a helpful understanding of inclusion and is readable for non-educators as well as professional teaching staff. COACH encourages teamwork of family and educators to best create appropriate, meaningful and beneficial IEP plans. I gave my copy to the principal of my son's school and she immediately asked me for the publisher's catalog so she could order a copy and implement COACH processes with other families affected by disabilities as well.

Editorial Review:

Substantially revised in response to research and consumer feedback, the second edition of this flexible planning tool is more user-friendly, family oriented, and focused on life outcomes such as social relationships and participation in typical home, school, and community activities.

This updated format makes COACH easier to use; it features redesigned forms; more detailed explanations; explicit instructions on "purpose," "directions," "materials needed," and "helpful hints" for each step; and tabs and icons that make information easy to find. Using the established and field-tested methods of COACH, special and general educators, related services providers, and school administrators can collaborate with families and work toward developing a meaningful IEP for each student.
