A Must-Have Resource for School Counselors and Teachers 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is written in a very user-friendly format for educators. Over twenty mental health and learning disorders are described in this book including symptoms, behaviors, classroom strategies, and professional treatments. Based on current research and educational trends, this is the perfect book to bring to IEP and Child Study meetings for practical and concise interventions. Teachers and counselors will not only find plenty of ideas on how to motivate their students with learning and mental health disorders but also how to apply effective teaching strategies with all students. As a school counselor who spends a great deal of time meeting with teachers and parents, this book has spent very little time on my bookshelf. A great tool!

A compendium of practical and proven strategies educators can use when teaching and supporting students 5 out of 5 stars.

A practicing psychologist for more than 30 years who evaluates and treats children, adolescents and adults for a variety of problems, Myles L. Cooley also draws upon his experience and expertise as a consultant to schools and as a presenter of education al programs to educators, mental health professionals, physicians, and parents in "Teaching Kids With Mental Health & Learning Disorders In The Regular Classroom". This basic and very strongly recommended instruction manual and guidebook is specifically designed to help classroom teachers learn how to recognize, understand and help challenged (and often challenging) students to learn and succeed academically. A compendium of practical and proven strategies educators can use when teaching and supporting students who exhibit mental health problems and learning disorder issues, "Teaching Kids With Mental Health & Learning Disorders In The Regular Classroom" will also alert teachers as to what behavior sand symptoms to look for in troubled students, provide ideas for fostering social development in these children, and how best to motivate all students to learn. Of special note is the discussion of the latest approach to intervention procedures, including Response to Intervention (RTI).

Editorial Review:

The definitive resource for special educators, school psychologists, and child group study teams

This comprehensive guide provides all the information needed -- including definitions, symptoms, characteristics, and types -- for the most significant educational disabilities and disorders, presented in a user-friendly format. Using the reauthorized IDEA 2004 Act as a frame of reference, this book is ideal for coding and mapping to IEPs -- the individualized education plans that are key to special education funding. The very first manual created specifically for education professionals, this book addresses a range of disorders and relates their significance to classroom practice, including: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delays, Mental Retardation, Traumatic Brain Injury, and many others.

Roger Pierangelo, PhD (Manhasset, NY), has over 30 years of experience as a teacher, psychologist, and director of a private clinic. George Giuliani, JD, PsyD (Melville, NY), is an Associate Professor at Hofstra University's School of Education.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive text for future teachers of learners with disabilities is grounded in the idea that assessment is at the center of all good teaching. Its hallmarks are its accessibility, balanced coverage of both this formal and informal assessment, plus thorough exploration of the link between gathering information and actually using it to make informed decisions. Offering a step-by-step Assessment Question Model on the inside front cover, it equips readers to understand the complete assessment process, from choosing the best tool, to adapting instruction to improving outcomes. Popular, as well as lesser-known, tools are examined in order to acquaint readers with promising procedures for assessing students with special needs.

Great for Gen Ed teachers 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As an inclusion facilitator, I highly recommend this book for the general education teacher. It is well organized, well written, and provides detailed but direct overviews about specific learning challenges, as well as accommodations that are viable in the classroom. I read the whole thing from cover to cover and am recommending to all of the teachers that I am working with.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen types of special-needs students are discussed in this handbook on meeting the needs of a diverse student population within a mainstream classroom. Ranging from students with behavior disorders, ADHD, and mental retardation to the blind, terminally ill, and gifted and talented, each profile includes a clear definition, characteristic behaviors, and suggestions for working with that student's specific strengths and weaknesses. A section devoted to inclusion strategies helps educators set goals for special needs students, define the roles of other students in the classroom, and work with the administration if mainstream placement is unsuccessful.

This comprehensive handbook reviews the major theoretical, methodological, and instructional advances that have occurred in the field of learning disabilities over the last 20 years. With contributions from leading researchers, the volume synthesizes a vast body of knowledge on the nature of learning disabilities, their relationship to basic psychological and brain processes, and how students with these difficulties can best be identified and treated. Findings are reviewed on ways to support student performance in specific skill areas--including language arts, math, science, and social studies--as well as general principles of effective instruction that cut across academic domains.

Editorial Review:

What is so exciting about the recent popularity of qualitative research in disability studies? Does the use of this type of inquiry in special education and rehabilitation really promise a fundamental shift in our understanding of disability as a personal experience and a social construction, or is it simply a fad that will gradually subside into just one more research technique among many? This book attempts to answer these questions by practical example rather than by methodological debate. For those interested in the use of qualitative research in the study of disability, this book should provide an excellent starting point for sampling the range and vitality of this approach.

A student teacher of students with learning disabilities 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I used this text while in college. It covers a wide range of assessment tools and procedures from standardized tests like the Woodcock Johnson to portfolio assessment. This is a good tool for college students to use to learn about the general aspects of various assessment tools. I would not recommend it to teachers because it is not specific enough. The book is very well organized and easy to read.

Better Than That! 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book through college and actually, it was more than useful in my first few years teaching. Since most teachers of children with special needs only need the basics of testing and assesment, this gives the most understandable view of how to assess, why to assess and what to do with your assessments. In most schools, the more formal testing is done at other levels, and the teacher simply needs to understand what these tests are saying and where to go from there.

Great overview 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a required text for a doctorate level class and covers information very thouroughly. Because of constant changes in the field, even this 2004 copy has some outdated information, but it acknowledges areas where change seems to be coming. This is the first time I had ordered one of my texts from Amazon and decided to do so due to the price. I have always been very pleased with deliveries that rarely take more than 3 days. I ordered this on January 19 during the last few minutes of being able to have it delivered by January 22. I did not receive it until January 29. The only time anything has taken more than 3 days was when I really counted on having it sooner. If you need it as a class text, you can save money--but allow yourself plenty of time.
