Editorial Review:

The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.

This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child.

This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

Editorial Review:

With 150,000 copies in print, the original TEACHING GIFTED KIDS is a perennial best-seller. Teachers everywhere call it, "the orange Bible" and turn to it daily to make sure their gifted students are getting the learning opportunities they need and deserve.

Since the first edition was published, author Susan Winebrenner has spent eight years using it with school districts, teachers, parents, and kids across the U.S. and the U.K. this revised, expanded, updated edition reflects her personal experiences and the changes that have taken place in education over the years. Her basic philosophy hasn't changed, and all of the proven, practical, classroom-tested strategies teachers love are still here. But there's now an entire chapter on identifying gifted students. The step-by-step how-tos for using the strategies are more detailed and user-friendly. There's a new chapter especially for parents. And all of the forms in the book are also on CD-ROM (sold separately) so you can print them out and customize them for your classroom.

Since 1992, TEACHING GIFTED KIDS has been the definitive guide to meeting the learning needs of gifted students in the mixed-abilities classroom–without losing control, causing resentment, or spending hours preparing extra materials. This new edition is even better.

Editorial Review:

Psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino claims that 20 percent of children have what she calls the Edison trait: "dazzling intelligence, an active imagination, a free-spirited approach to life, and the ability to drive everyone around them crazy." She named the trait after Thomas Edison, who flunked out of school despite his obvious brilliance. Palladino says that Edison-trait children think divergently, while the routines and structure of schools are more geared toward convergent thinking, or focusing on one idea at a time. The incompatible school environment, she says, usually leads divergent-thinking children to act out, receive poor grades, and often be labeled as strong-willed and disruptive.

These symptoms may sound similar to those of ADD, but Palladino says that's an overused term often mistakenly applied to Edison-trait children. "In most cases," she says, "ADD behavior patterns are comparable to but more extreme than the typical patterns of an Edison-trait child who does not have ADD." A diagnosis of ADD does not take into consideration factors such as "intelligence, perceptiveness, sensitivity, creativity, and wit."

With many references to scientific studies, Palladino helps you decide whether your child is one of the three types of Edison-trait children: dreamer, discoverer, or dynamo. She also gives pointed, practical advice regarding such controversial topics as diet, neurofeedback treatment, and psychological testing. For frustrated parents and educators, Dreamers, Discoverers, and Dynamos will be a rich source of both help and hope.

Not out of print 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a comprehensive book for anyone who has a gifted child. It is also appropriate for anyone who works with gifted children (teachers, psychologists, etc.).

Amazon incorrectly lists this book as 'Out of Print'. It is not. It is available on the Barnes & Noble website, the Borders website, the publisher's website, etc. The only place it is not available, apparently, is Amazon.

Great resource for nervous parents 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been great at calming my fears as the parent of a gifted child. It talks about expectations for your child as well as how to handle certain challenging situations both at home and at school. Definite must have.

Editorial Review:

Raising a gifted child is both a joy and a challenge, yet parents of gifted children have few resources for reliable parenting information. The four authors, who have decades of professional experience with gifted children and their families, provide practical guidance in areas such as: Characteristics of gifted children; Peer relations; Sibling issues; Motivation & underachievement; Discipline issues; Intensity & stress; Depression & unhappiness; Educational planning; Parenting concerns; Finding professional help; and much, much more!

Editorial Review:

When educators (and parents) think about gifted kids, they usually focus on their intellectual needs. But gifted kids are much more than test scores and grades. In their second book together, Jim Delisle and Judy Galbraith explain what giftedness means, how gifted kids are identified, and how we might improve the identification process. Then they take a close-up look at gifted kids from the inside out-their social and emotional needs. Topics include self-image and self-esteem, perfectionism, multipotential, depression, feelings of "differentness," and stress. The authors suggest ways to help gifted underachievers and those who are bored in school, and ways to encourage healthy relationships with friends, family and other adults. The final chapter explains how teachers can make it safe to be smart by creating the gifted-friendly classroom. Complete with first-person stories, easy-to-use strategies, survey results, activities, tools for teachers, reproducibles for students, and up-to-date research and resources, this is a book that belongs in every classroom. Includes first-person stories, easy-to-use strategies, survey results, activities, reproducibles, and up-to-date research and resources. This title replaces the Free Spirit classic, MANAGING THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF THE GIFTED.

Editorial Review:

Hundreds of thousands of children face life with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism spectrum disorder that affects a child's language and social skills. Kids with Asperger's have average to above-average intelligence, but often have obsessive interests, are socially awkward, and do not understand the subtleties of language and conversation. With concentrated effort on the part of parents and educators, these children can begin to overcome the difficulties of this disorder and find success in school and life.

School Success for Kids with Asperger's Syndrome covers topics such as recognizing and diagnosing Asperger's syndrome, addressing the needs of students with Asperger's, implementing successful practices in the classroom, working with the school system, and providing interventions in the home to help develop needed skills.

School Success for Kids With Asperger's Syndrome covers a myriad of techniques to help students with AS meet their potential. This well-written, comprehensive book should be on the bookshelf of every teacher and parent.”
—Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., Chief of Programs and Development, Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence; Associate Professor, University of Kansas

“With the growing number of children diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, School Success for Kids With Asperger's Syndrome is a must have for parents and teachers. Its engaging tone and comprehensive scope make it both readable and informative. I strongly recommend it for parents, teachers, and others who are interested in individuals with Asperger's syndrome.”
—Mary Ruth Coleman, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Inspire animated discussions of questions that concern kids - and all of us - with this innovative, interactive book. Open your students' minds to the wonders of philosophy. Allow them to grapple with the questions philosophers have discussed since the ancient Greeks. Questions include: "Who are your friends?" "Can computers think?" "Can something logical not make sense?" "Can you think about nothing?" Young minds will find the range of 40 questions to be both entertaining and informative. If you have ever wondered about questions like these, you are well on the way to becoming a philosopher!

Philosophy for Kids offers young people (ages 10 and up) the opportunity to become acquainted with the wonders of philosophy. Packed with exciting activities arranged around the topics of Values, Knowledge, Reality, and Critical Thinking, this book can be used individually or by the whole class. Each activity allows kids to increase their understanding of philosophical concepts and issues and enjoy themselves at the same time.

In addition to learning about a challenging subject, students philosophizing in a classroom setting as well as the casual reader of Philosophy for Kids will sharpen the ability to think critically about these and similar questions. Experiencing the enjoyment of philosophical thought enhances a young person’s appreciation for the importance of reasoning throughout the traditional curriculum of subjects.

The book includes activities, teaching tips, a glossary of terms, and suggestions for further reading.

Fun overview for introducing Algebra to a gifted youngster 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Almost all the books I purchase are bought with an eye towards introducing advance concepts in a fun way to a gifted upper elementary homeschooled student.

This book is clearly fun and the introduction of each concept is simple enough that even a 3rd grade gifted girl can handle. I think it has fun uses. It can be used as a supplement to a regular Algebra text for an accelerated elementary student who just needs a quick explanation of what the concept is about.

The examples are truly real as opposed to useless, star trek questions which one sometimes find in regular brick and mortar textbooks.
A good supplement to have around the house for anyone with little kids who love solving Math problems.

Editorial Review:

Algebra is often taught abstractly with little or no emphasis on what algebra is or how it can be used to solve real problems. Just as English can be translated into other languages, word problems can be "translated" into the math language of algebra and easily solved. Real World Algebra explains this process in an easy to understand format using cartoons and drawings. This makes self-learning easy for both the student and any teacher who never did quite understand algebra. Includes chapters on algebra and money, algebra and geometry, algebra and physics, algebra and levers and many more. Designed for children in grades 4-9 with higher math ability and interest but could be used by older students and adults as well. Contains 22 chapters with instruction and problems at three levels of difficulty.

A must read for parents of bright students with neurodevelopmental disorders 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Rich Weinfeld, Linda Barnes-Robinson, Sue Jeweler, and Betty Roffman Shevitz have written a very comprehensive, clear, and practical handbook for helping bright children with a range of learning and developmental difficulties. Based upon their rich experiences developing nationally-recognized programs for gifted kids with learning disabilities, ADHD, and Aspergers/Autism (and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders), they provide practical and creative recommendations for helping kids with uneven development. Providing many examples and exceptionally useful suggestions for educational strategies, accommodations, and modifications, the authors provide parents, teachers, and mental health professionals with a deep appreciation for the unique needs of gifted children with learning differences.

As a neuropsychologist in private practice, I will continue to recommend this book to my clients. Unlike many books that espouse theoretical positions but are thin on suggestions, Smart Kids with Learning Difficulties offers practical advice and guidance for helping students with a wide range of developmental differences.

Editorial Review:

Smart Kids With Learning Difficulties: Overcoming Obstacles and Realizing Potential is an engaging must-read for any parent, educator, or counselor of smart kids who face learning difficulties. The authors, who have more than 20 years experience working with and advocating for gifted and learning diabled children, provide useful, practical advice for helping smart kids with learning challenges succeed in school.

Topics covered in the book include identifying and recognizing gifted/learning disabled students, what the law says about this population, planning and developing accommodations that empower these students, what works and doesn't work in the classroom, tools and checklists to build supportive learning environments, and the roles and responsibilities of parents, students, and school personnel.
