The two themes brought together in this volume - the canon law and the liturgy of the early mediaeval Latin Church - have close links. In the book particular emphasis is given to the Irish "collection canonum hibernensis" and its many derivatives, to works from Carolingian Salzburg and 11th-century Southern Italy, and to liturgical collections. This book describes in detail the ways in which the life of the Church of England is affected by law. It deals with a great many topics including canonical jurisprudence, ecclesiastical government, the ministry of clergy and laity, faith, doctrine and liturgy, the churches' rites and the management of property and finance. Each of these subjects is studied and analyzed critically and where appropriate comparisons are made with the Roman Catholic Church.

Knowledge of the canon law was essential for the medieval ecclesiastical administrator, and teaching in canon law was provided in all western universities in the Middle Ages. This study examines the provision for students (especially in Cambridge), the choice of available textbooks, and the collections of legal books made by the University and colleges and by private individuals. Dr Owen notes opportunities for the employment of canonists, and discusses a group of formularies and notebooks compiled by scholars active in the church courts. Official teaching of canon law ceased at the Reformation, but the study continued in the faculties of civil law; medieval texts were reissued and many new guides to the current practice of church courts written. Renewed interest in the medieval church began among the clergy of the High Church party of the late seventeenth century, and this led to further study of the canon law continuing into the nineteenth century.

Monuments of Endlesse Labours is an account of the evolution of a distinct tradition and literature of English canon law. The study and teaching began in England in the twelfth century, and during the thirteenth a profession of practising canonists arose. Their expertise was not confined to ecclesiastical matters in a narrow sense, but extended into such important fields as marriage and probate.

Taking the work of individual canonists in turn, from William Paull and William Bateman in the fourteenth century to Stephen Lushington and Sir Robert Phillimore in the nineteenth, J.H. Baker assesses the various different contributions to this national tradition made by original thinkers, writers, compilers, editors and judges. The survival for so long of a distinct legal system parallel to the common law, which nevertheless touched in many vital respects the lives of everyone in England, makes the story of English ecclesiastical law an essential part of English legal history.

A small reprinting of some canon law questions-and-answers which were penned for Catholic newspapers in the early 1980s. Neither a code nor a commentary, the materials tried to respond briefly (sometimes, extremely briefly) to a few of the more common questions about Church law being floated in Catholic circles at the time. Some pretty famous canon lawyers contributed to the project, but unless one's current questions coincide exactly with a given question in the book, there is not much point in consulting it anymore.
