Editorial Review:

In the Middle Ages, European nations raised standing armies to fight their foes. At sea, however, their resources were much more limited and largely dependent on privately owned vessels and their crews. To stimulate the growth and ardor of their fleets, the monarchs of Renaissance Europe offered the crews of their naval vessels and licensed privateers a chance to get rich by plundering enemy ships and cargoes. These actions gave rise to the doctrine and practice of maritime prize--a subject little studied but regularly referred to by C. S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian, and other popular writers about the era. Now, after a decade of research in European and American archives, Donald A. Petrie explains the origins of prize taking, the rules of the sea that became universally accepted among the maritime powers of the world, and the final decline of prize taking during the nineteenth century.

Most of the book is devoted to rollicking, never-before-published sea stories about this form of looting that helped define the last century of fighting sail. From the North Cape of Norway to the southern tip of Africa, from Charleston, South Carolina, to the East River of New York, these tales of high-seas adventure span a broad area and period. For readers fascinated by warfare in the days of sail, in both history and fiction, Petrie has unveiled the mysteries of prize taking in a manner that is highly readable yet thoroughly authentic. His book is the first such study to be published in this country since 1861.

Editorial Review:

The subject of war crimes and collective wrongdoing - whether in the name of ethnic cleansing or a more veiled form of nationalism - is in the forefront of contemporary discourse in politics, international affairs, and political philosophy. This volume addresses urgent questions about the nature of war crimes, nationalism, ethnic cleansing, and collective responsibility.

In fourteen newly written essays, a distinguished team of international scholars consider war crimes and collective wrongdoing from a variety of moral, political, and legal perspectives. There is a substantial introduction from Anthony Ellis and each group of essays is followed by an afterword from the editor and suggestions for further reading.

Consistently probing and provocative, War Crimes and Collective Wrongdoing promises to be of enduring interest to students and scholars alike.

Prosecuting war crimes: a personal account 5 out of 5 stars.

Richard Goldstone's latest book takes you on a journey, which is not only starkly graphic and honest in its depictions but allows you to be privy to particular times of historical importance, which have been previously hidden from the public eye. Furthermore, Goldstone, in this book, not only concretises the meaning and substance of Humananitarian law BUT elavates it to a higher level, bringing home the message that it can happen again...

Editorial Review:

In this stirring book Richard J. Goldstone chronicles his progression from a youthful activist opposing South Africa's racial policies to the world's first independent war crimes' prosecutor. A justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Goldstone has also served as chief prosecutor for United Nations tribunals on human rights crimes in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. His unique firsthand experience investigating these crimes gives profound weight to his plea for a permanent international criminal court. The Castle Lectures in Ethics, Politics, and Economics

Editorial Review:

Recently declassified records on the Korean War have brought to light widespread and systemic war crimes committed by North Koreans and Chinese against troops serving under the United Nations command, according to this study. After examining over 1,600 cases, Philip Chinnery recounts his searing findings in this tragic three-part narrative. Part one covers the first year of the war, when most of the battlefield war crimes, death marches, and atrocities took place. The second part deals with the horrors prisoners faced at the hands of their captors, including starvation, slave labor, and medical experimentation. Part three delves into the prisoners' repatriation at war's end and the disturbing evidence that some of the 7,956 American and 100 British serviceman considered missing in action may have been left behind at the close of the war. In one of many examples, he sites a formerly confidential U.S. Government document that discusses a B-29 crew's release by the Chinese two years after the war ended and how the crew was ordered to keep quiet about the prisoners still under communist control. Had there been a clear victor in Korea instead of a truce, the author believes that war crime trials would have followed.

Editorial Review:

This book examines the use of national and international law to prosecute Nazi crimes, the centerpiece of twentieth-century state-sponsored genocide and mass murder crimes, the paradigmatic instance of state-sponsored criminality and genocide in the twentieth century. Its various essays, the contributors reconstruct the historical historical setting of the crimes committed under the aegis of the Nazi regime and examine why postwar adjudication took place only within limits, within the national and international judicial forums responsible for prosecuting perpetrators. The topics discussed include the impact of the Nazi justice system on postwar justice, postwar legal proceedings against those who committed war crimes and genocide, the work of the Nuremberg tribunal and Allied trials, and judicial investigations and prosecutions in East Germany, West Germany, and Austria. They span the postwar period up to contemporary U.S. legal efforts to deport Nazi criminals within its borders and libel trials against Holocaust denials in London and Canadian courts and libel suits brought by Holocaust deniers in British and Canadian courts, and they reveal new perspectives on the present and future implications of these trials.

You would have to consider this book to be a literal eye opener. The author gives several real life examples of Nazi war criminals living the good life in the United States. The author
takes several cases of Nazis who have set up residency in the
United States. The details of these individuals false residency
makes for informative reading as well. The network that protects
these individuals is given attention as well. This makes for scary reading that Nazi war criminals could actually live the good life of the United States as normal American citizens. This
is a book that will make you wonder. Read this book. It is definitely a page turner.

As chilling a page-turner as any modern spy thriller! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read and re-read this book several times, and it is fantastic. By selecting four Nazis who slipped through the cracks of the overwhelming post-war immigration, Howard Blum skillfully details their stories, and the efforts to expose them for living the good life here in America. The detail with which their horrific actions are recounted is ample evidence of Blum's thorough nature and regard for history while keeping the reader mesmorized. Even though it was written in the 1970's, the impact on today's readers should be felt just as deeply.
