Editorial Review:

Research Methods in Politics is an accessible and student-friendly guide to the use of qualitative and quantitative methods in researching politics. This clearly written book is ideal for use on introductory methods courses and its helpful structure also makes it a useful guide for readers who are doing their own research project. Roger Pierce covers every angle in his overview of contemporary approaches to political research:
  • Part I: Introduction – gives a solid overview of the philosophy and principles of research.
  • Part II: Methodologies – presents qualitative and quantitative research methods, introduces research design and offers a critical review of selected methods.
  • Part III: Collecting Information – concentrates on methods of gathering information, such as interviews and focus groups, and discusses issues associated with ensuring quality of information.
  • Part IV: Analyzing and Interpreting the Information – deals with selecting and employing appropriate methods for analyzing and interpreting data, and covers the process of communicating research.
Methods for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative information are covered, including factor analysis and discourse analysis. The inclusion of chapter objectives, regular summaries, questions for discussion, and tasks and assignments, makes this the must-have text for anyone studying research methods as part of an undergraduate or graduate politics course.

Editorial Review:

This new, multidisciplinary series will present works devoted to the indigenous peoples of North America -- the First Nations, Native Hawaiians, Native Americans, and the Indians of Mexico. Topics will range from the social sciences to education, law, criminology, health, the environment, religion, architecture, linguistics, and agriculture, including innovative interdisciplinary approaches. Books featuring Native voices and issues of particular current significance to Native peoples will be featured. This book gives students of policy analysis, program evaluation, research methods, and public administration insights and know-how in conducting research. The book demystifies policy research in several ways. The authors recognize that traditional analysis or program evaluation are rarely applicable in their pure forms to policy concerns. Therefore, the first four chapters set out a practical approach that avoids forcing idealistic and obscure research concepts onto complex public programs and policies. These chapters also emphasize the importance of the decision context in which research is used. The book also offers a set of case studies drawn from real instances of policy research that provide students with the opportunity to grapple with the challenges posed by the unique information needs of public programs and agencies. Each case study includes the following: -- A detailed description of a policy research problem -- A discussion of the unique challenges posed by the problem -- A description of the policy research techniques utilized -- A summary of the outcomes associated with the research as it was conducted -- Conclusions about the implications for policyresearch -- Exercises and discussion questions for classroom use

Editorial Review:

This collection illustrates how nonlinear methods can provide new insight into existing political questions. Politics is often characterized by unexpected consequences, sensitivity to small changes, non-equilibrium dynamics, the emergence of patterns, and sudden changes in outcomes. These are all attributes of nonlinear processes. Bringing together a variety of recent nonlinear modeling approaches, Political Complexity explores what happens when political actors operate in a dynamic and complex social environment.
The contributions to this collection are organized in terms of three branches within non-linear theory: spatial nonlinearity, temporal nonlinearity, and functional nonlinearity. The chapters advance beyond analogy towards developing rigorous nonlinear models capable of empirical verification.
Contributions to this volume cover the areas of landscape theory, computational modeling, time series analysis, cross-sectional analysis, dynamic game theory, duration models, neural networks, and hidden Markov models. They address such questions as: Is international cooperation necessary for effective economic sanctions? Is it possible to predict alliance configurations in the international system? Is a bureaucratic agency harder to remove as time goes on? Is it possible to predict which international crises will result in war and which will avoid conflict? Is decentralization in a federal system always beneficial?
The contributors are David Bearce, Scott Bennett, Chris Brooks, Daniel Carpenter, Melvin Hinich, Ken Kollman, Susanne Lohmann, Walter Mebane, John Miller, Robert E. Molyneaux, Scott Page, Philip Schrodt, and Langche Zeng.
This book will be of interest to a broad group of political scientists, ranging from those who employ nonlinear methods to those curious to see what it is about. Scholars in other social science disciplines will find the new methodologies insightful for their own substantive work.
Diana Richards is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Minnesota.

Editorial Review:

The second edition of this widely used text provides a comprehensive introduction to the main research methods employed in the study of politics and assessment of their strengths and limitations; of their interrelationship; and of ethical issues in research. Illustrated throughout with boxed examples of real political research, the book ranges widely from substantial coverage of statistical methods to the use of archives, interviews, discourse analysis and the internet. Two additional chapters in the second edition focus on the relationship between research and policy and the lessons for researchers from the study of elections in the US and UK.

Editorial Review:

Rational choice is the dominant theoretical approach in political science in North America and one of the main contending approaches elsewhere. This major new text provides a clear and accessible introduction assuming no prior knowledge and providing a uniquely fair-minded assessment of both the strengths and limitations of the approach. Truly international in scope and in its choice of examples, it provides broad-ranging coverage of the areas in which rational choice has been widely used and in-depth coverage of the main works of its key protagonists.
