Editorial Review:

The Hero and His Shadow uses the history of Israeli society to examine the psychological perspective of collective processes. Erel Shalit focuses on the actualization of the Zionist myth, which depended on a small group of individuals to transform the idea into matter by merging personal identity with collective idea. He finds that this process emanates from the close proximity of the life of the individual and the life of the collective in Israel. Shalit searches for the psychological relationships and motivations of the people of Israel as they evolved from a movement into a nation of people guided by similar ideals. Recognizing the use of the images of the pioneer-farmer, the guardsman, and the warrior, which became admired hero-ideals, he delves into the shadow side of the guiding myths of modern Israel. Here he found feelings of hubris, weakness, arrogance, and despair. Shalit exposes these aspects, normally repressed and left in the background, to fully explore the personal and collective ideas behind the Zionist myth.

suberb 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A suberb insight into the shaken mind of Hitler. As the author is a retired psychologist, as well as a former German army officer, the first hand knowledge demonstrated in this book is far superior to the run-of- the-mill works about the madness of Hitler. However, the price is somewhat higher than I, and most other book-buyers, would like to pay.

Editorial Review:

This book is the most up-to-date, comprehensive analysis of Hitler written by a psychologist. Going beyond the reliance on a Freudian interpretation of Hitler's personality, Schwaab employs his knowledge of abnormal psychology to penetrate the paranoid world of Hitler and to demonstrate the depth of his mental disturbance. The analysis is framed by a poignant personal reflection on Schwaab's experiences (and those of his father, who was first a follower of Hitler and later one of those who attempted to assassinate him) growing up in Nazi Germany and an afterword in which the meaning of Nazism is placed in the context of contemporary developments in a reunited Germany.

Editorial Review:

This book examines the unique relationships between seven important leaders in history--from Henry VIII to Martin Luther King, Jr.--and their principal advisors. Studying the common psychological themes in such relationships, as well as the consequences of the collaborations, Michael Maher traces the evolution of new styles of political leadership from absolutism through nationalism and socialism to the social advocacy developed by Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy. The book uncovers the complex systems each team creates and the way these systems evolve toward a point of impasse or gridlock that requires the emergence of a new political system. Written for the general reader interested in history, this unique, comparative approach will also appeal to the student of politics and management. Lieutenants uncovers several recurring patterns in the partnerships of each leader and lieutenant. The book reveals how none of these lieutenants fully controls the forces they use, but merely manages or manipulates them for a time. Maher explores the often complementary personalities in the partnerships--one introspective, the other an extrovert; or older men with younger collaborators. He discusses the strongly developed sense of mission in each of the lieutenants, often greater than that of the leader. The book follows new models of leadership and political power created by these partnerships and reveals, even in the most abstract or altruistic appearance, the sense of power these lieutenants covet.

Editorial Review:

What motivates political leaders to seek office? What social backgrounds do political leaders exhibit? Are all leaders fundamentally alike or do we find important differences between them? These and related questions concerning political leadership are examined in this unique new work. The authors concentrate on two principal "types" of political leaders: "Loyalists", those who seek office through peaceful processes, whether appointive or elective; and "Revolutionaries", those who seize power in violent ways. By systematically comparing the similarities and differences between these two groups, Rejai and Phillips find that Loyalists and Revolutionaires are basically the same type of person. However, their most significant differences lie in their relative access to positions of power and authority within their respective societies.

Editorial Review:

Whom a prime minister or president will not shake hands with is still more noticed than with whom they will. Public identity can afford to be ambiguous about friends, but not about enemies. Rodney Barker examines the available accounts of how enmity functions in the cultivation of identity, how essential or avoidable it is, and what the consequences are for the contemporary world.

Great reference work 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have this book, along with it's companions in the series, Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes and Measures of Legal Attitudes, as a references for my undergraduate Research Methods course. I have tired of students looking for instruments for their projects through Google or Yahoo. These volumes have valid and reliable instruments that are documented and NOT copyrighted, so my students do not have to get permission or pay royalties for their projects.

Elshtain rocks. A tremendous writer whose acute philosophical sensibilities she combines with her interest in gender and moral discourse to reveal sophisticated and poignant prose on modern thought. Thinkers examined include: Luther, Weil, Jane Addams, Hegel, Freud, Machiavelli, Kant, and Arendt.
