Required Reading for All Canadians & the Less Fortunate 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mention the word "constitution" or any phrase with that word in it, and any Canadian above the age of 6 years old either will get a glazed look in his eyes or will fall asleep in 5 minutes or less. One reason is that for most Canadians, constitutional discussions either are so abstract or so swamped in minutiae that any such discussion is a sure-fire cure for insomnia. Anothr reason is that the emotional roller-coaster that most Canadians have experienced in the last 25 years or so renders the topic of "constitution" a very raw nerve that Canadians would prefer not to touch; they would sooner choose dental surgery without the benefit of novocaine.

It is regrettable, therefore, that these perfectly human, understandable and reasonable reactions would probably prevent many (if not all) Canadians from reading this excellent book by Kenneth McRoberts about Canadian history, politics, society and (yes) constitutional development. It is sufficiently detailed to raise, answer and explain many questions and concerns about how Canada got to where it found itself at the end of the 20th century. Yet, the details do not slow down the book's momentum. In fact, Professor McRoberts' clear and detailed style keeps one wide awake while making such supposedly esoteric topics like the compact theory, federal-provincial division of powers, bilingualsim, biculturalism and multiculturalism, etc. perfectly and readily understandable. His chronicle of events and individuals, of successes and failures, of near successes and near failures, and of the thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears of ordinary Canadians should be required reading for all high school and university students (whether or not they are taking a history course), for all Canadians who care about Canada, its people, its potential and its future, and for all non-Canadians who wonder why such a nice bunch of folks like Canadians with such a nice country as Canada periodically have come close to destroying their country.

Editorial Review:

This book examines the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada, from its historical roots, the roles of governments such as Trudeau and Mulroney, issues of official bilingualism, multiculturalism, the 1995 Quebec Referendum and the impact Quebec separatism would have on the future of Canada.

Editorial Review:

Daniele Conversi's book is a comprehensive introduction to Basque and Catalan nationalism. The two movements have much in common but have differed in the strategies adopted to further their cause. Basque nationalism, in the shape of the military wing of ETA, took the path of violence, spawning an efficient terrorist campaign. Catalan nationalism, by contrast, is generally more accommodating and peaceful.

Editorial Review:

These eleven essays focus on Basque nationalism and institutions in the European Union in an increasingly globalized world, the image of Basques in the international media, depictions of ETA in the Spanish press and cinema, the status of Navarre and the French Basque country within (or without) Basque nationalism, and the articulation of a Basque foreign policy through the Basque Government's diaspora policy.

Adeleke, the UnAfrican African. 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

To Mr. Adeleke black nationalists in the nineteenth century were the mirror image of colonialist racist whites. I would agree with him here to some extent, in that they were certainly not perfect. But what is mind boggling is his portrail of W.E.B DuBois as THE model Black Naionalist. This is view of someone who obviosly knows nothing about DuBois and his collaberation with American imperialists, such as Firestone Company. Nor does he seem to be aware of DuBois integrationist stance with the NAACP, or his insistance that blacks in the West do not want to migrate to Liberia because the climate is "too hot"(which is equally damaging as saying that Africa is a "Dark Contintent"). But even more mind boggling is Adeleke's view that unlike other white imperialists, American intervention "saved" liberia! I would also like to point out too that he is equally ignorant of the Afrocentic discourse and its interpretation of black culture. Mr. Adeleke thesis is obviously weak. The "genuine" Pan-Africanists he presents in his book were equally "Eurocentric" in their outlook, i.e. they were Marxtists and can be seen as agents of Soviet imperialism. When Adeleke claims that black nationalists in the diaspora "collaberated" with white imperialists in thier colonising efforts in Africa, the sublte message here is that not only are blacks to be blamed for slavery (which some people believe), but European colonialism as well!! Mr. Adeleke confesses in his book that it is a difficult thesis to advance. Therefore let me be the first to say that he has failed miserably.

Editorial Review:

Nigerian-born scholar Tunde Adeleke argues that 19th-century black American nationalism not only embodied the racist and paternalistic values of Euro-American culture but also played an active role in justifying Europe's intrusion into Africa.

Probably the finest narative of the modern Irish Troubles 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Quite simply, 'War and an Irish Town' is probably the finest narative of the Irish Troubles. The Author Eamonn McCann was one of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and his book charts the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement to the armed resistance of the I.R.A. What gives this book the advantage over the others is that the narative is overlapped with a very sharp and readable analysis of the conflict. It gives interesting and often funny insights into the characters and actions that made Derry a European, and indeed World symbol of resistance in 1969.

Another crucial difference that puts McCann's book above the rest is that when you finish the book, you really feel that you have learnt something. The book doesn't stop there. When we look at conflicts around the world from Rwanda to Angola, often the question begged is why, and why are these people doing this? Eamonn with the skill and craft of a skilled journalist leaves you in no doubt that the violence of the last thirty years was neither inevitable nor simply the result of two headless communities at each others throat so often espoused by the media

If you are interested in the politics and history of contemporary Ireland then this book is an absolute must.

Editorial Review:

Eamonn McCann's account of what it is like to grow up a Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto--first published in 1974--quickly became a classic account of the feelings generated by British rule. The author was at the centre of events in Derry which first brought Northern Ireland to world attention. He witnessed the gradual transformation of the civil rights movement from a mild campaign for 'British Democracy' to an all-out military assault on the British state.

Editorial Review:

Investigating the secret societies, spies, classified projects, cults, and pacts that controlled the destinies of nations and empires, this historical exposé reveals the conspiracies that have changed the course of history. From the dirty dealings of the Louisiana Purchase and the Iran-Contra affair to the Trojan Horse and the research race to the moon, this examination proves that much of world history can be traced directly to classified plots and shadowy figures. These true accounts of espionage and secret organizations show the details necessary to paint a complete picture of the past.

Editorial Review:

British conquest of India, leading to the subordination of the entire Indian economy, polity and culture to the interests of the metropolitan power, forged a nation out of a widely-felt sense of cultural oneness among the Indian people. The great Revolt of 1857 was followed by resistance to British rule almost throughout the nineteenth century. This is a moving, accessible, episodically structured and well-researched account of the freedom struggle with a grass-roots perspective.

Editorial Review:

A correspondent for the Financial Times, Anatol Lieven spent much time in Chechnya, the postage-stamp-sized Caucasus republic whose break from Russia in 1994 precipitated a major war (one that Russia lost). Lieven looks into the long, troubled history of Russian-Chechen relations, noting that each side despised the other for largely cultural reasons (the Chechens have long been involved in organized crime in major Russian cities, whereas Russians have long tried to strip Chechnya of its resources). He notes that Chechen society has historically been militarized (one Armenian said to Lieven, "The men are always fighting and the women are cooking for them, nursing their wounds, and bringing up their children"), making the mountain people a formidable foe. In the meanwhile, writes Lieven, the Russian military suffered from low morale and from corruption of various kinds: Russian field soldiers sold their guns to Chechen guerrillas for vodka and currency, while Russian officers stole their soldiers' pay and Russian politicians skimmed off the top. This is an extraordinary look at a little-known conflict. --Gregory McNamee
