Editorial Review:

A provocative, behind-the-scenes investigation into the consequences of America's efforts to secure its borders since 9/11

On September 10, 2001, the United States was the most open country in the world. But in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, the U.S. government began to close its borders in an effort to fight terrorism. The Bush administration's goal was to build new lines of defense against terrorists without stifling the flow of people and ideas from abroad that has helped build the world's most dynamic economy. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way.

The Closing of the American Border is based on extensive interviews with the Bush administration officials charged with securing the border after 9/11, including former secretary of homeland security Tom Ridge and former secretary of state Colin Powell, and with many of the innocent people whose lives have been upended by the new border security and visa rules. A pediatric heart surgeon from Pakistan is stuck in Karachi for nearly a year, awaiting the security review that would allow him to return to the United States to take up a prestigious post at UCLA Medical Center. A brilliant Sudanese scientist, working tirelessly to cure one of the worst diseases of the developing world, loses years of valuable research when he is detained in Brazil after attending an academic conference on behalf of an American university.

Edward Alden goes behind the scenes to show how an administration that appeared united in the aftermath of the attacks was racked by internal disagreements over how to balance security and openness. The result is a striking and compelling assessment of the dangers faced by a nation that cuts itself off from the rest of the world, making it increasingly difficult for others to travel, live, and work here, and depriving itself of its most persuasive argument against its international critics—the example of what it has achieved at home.

blah 1 out of 5 stars.

This is an extremely simple notion - perhaps a Mussolini could make the trains run on time! - masquerading as a testable mathematical theory, then padded out to make a book. It's not mathematics, it's not science, if it can't be used to make quantitative predictions. The occasional graphs and references to the curve moving up or down or left or right merely annoyed me - it's vague speculation parading around in the clothes of rigorous thinking.

I was hoping that the chapters, the qualitative case studies of specific countries, would make up for what the main premise was lacking, but there really wasn't anything original there. It's all information with which you will probably be familiar if you've been reading news articles.

Editorial Review:

What Freakonomics does for understanding the economy, The J Curve does for better understanding how nations behave. Bremmer's tour of the nations of the world -- our friends, our foes, and others in between -- shows us how to see the world fresh, get rid of shopworn attitudes, and discover a new and useful way of thinking.

Enhanced with maps, tables, statistics, and photography 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Compiled and edited by Robert E. Gamer (Professor of Political Science, University of Missouri-Kansas City) Understanding Contemporary China offers an impressive and diverse body of contemporary scholarship focused upon economic, political, social, cultural, geographic, literary, environmental, and historical aspects of China. Enhanced with maps, tables, statistics, and photography, Understanding Contemporary China ranges from Stanley W. Toops' "China: A Geographic Preface"; to John Wong's "China's Economy"; to Ma Rong's "Population Growth and Urbanization"; to Laurel Bossen's "Women and Development"; to Chan Hoiman and Ambrose Y. C. King's "Religion"; and more. Understanding Contemporary China is a seminal body of work and a very strongly recommended addition to China Studies academic reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Editorial Review:

The third edition of "Understanding Contemporary China" retains all the useful features of the previous editions, but has been thoroughly updated to reflect such current issues and challenges as China's dynamic economic growth; its changing social and political culture; its growing international presence as a mediator, investor, and disburser of foreign aid; recent developments in the standoff with Taiwan; and the ever growing impact of environmental degradation.Assuming no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, the book was designed as a core text for "Introduction to China" courses and can also be used effectively in a variety of discipline-oriented curriculums (especially political science and sociology). Numerous maps and photographs enhance the text.

How does a homicidal tyrant come to power and rule? 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This was the best profile of Hitler when I read it forty years ago (it's only rival was Shirer's `Rise and Fall of the Third Reich'). Bullock skillfully explores Hitler's public and personal world in three sections (Party Leader, Chancellor, and War-Lord). Some of his surprising habits (non-smoker, vegetarian, and teetotaler) stand in contrast with the criminal war he launched and the innocents he killed.

`A Study in Tyranny' has since been supplemented with accounts by Fest, Kershaw, and several others, but Bullock remains well worth reading for those serious in the subject.

The Consequences of Tyranny 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Allan Bullock's biography is comprehensive. Any history book exceeding 800 pages falls into this category. However, do not let the scale of the book deter the reader from gaining an insight to this mad and evil man.

In terms of the history of the 20th Century, Hitler is certainly one of that century's more influential characters. From a political perspective, the "pantheon" of significance would include Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Hitler. Note that no democrats get a look in here. Perhaps the nearest in terms of influence would be Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Thus, no history of the last century can be complete without a thorough understanding of Adolf Hitler and his vast and demonic influence.

Bullock's work covers Hitler's life in its entirety. We begin with his birth in 1889 in Austria near the Bavarian border, through his years as a rabble rouser and gutter politician and finish with his last days in the bunker in Berlin with the Red Army literally only a few hundred metres from capturing him. Yet through all this period, Hitler's core personality is unchanged. He has a seemingly innate hatred for Jews combined with a belief that Germany was conspired against from the inside when the First World War armistice was signed. These views lead Hitler to indulge his fantasies that Germany will rise again and that only he is able to lead the nation. The end, of course, is the absolute defeat of Germany such that a platform is provided for its splitting in two during the cold war. It also provides the scope for Stalin to impose his wishes upon Eastern Europe. This piece of modern day imperialism only ended in the final years of last century.

To complete a reading Allan Bullock's work is not an easy task. It is truly an immense and impressive work. Yet, if the reader perseveres with the task, the reward is that one is left with a clearer picture of the mad man who legacy was death and destruction. It is the diary of madness succeeding over reason for too long. The consequences of this "success" were truly horrible.

Editorial Review:

The classic biography of Hitler that remains, years after its publication, one of the most authoritative and readable accounts of his life. Here in an abridged edition.

Editorial Review:

Few political figures of the twentieth century have aroused as much passion and controversy as the Russian Revolutionary Leon Trotsky. Trotsky's extraordinary life and extensive writings have left and indelible mark on revolutionary conscience; and yet there was at one time a danger that his name would disappear altogether from history. Isaac Deutscher's magisterial three-volume biography was the first major publication to counter the powerful Stalinist propaganda machine, and in this definitive work Trotsky emerges as the most heroic, and ultimately tragic, character of the Russian Revolution. This second volume of the trilogy, first published in 1959, is a self-contained account of the great struggle between Stalin and Trotsky that followed the end of the civil war in Russia in 1921 and the death of Lenin. From the narrative of Trotsky's uncompromising opposition to Stalin's policies emerge character studies of the important Soviet leaders; a brilliant portrait of Trotsky the man of ideas, the Marxist philosopher and the literary critic; and a new assessment of the causes of defeat which led to his expulsion from the part, his exile, and his 1929 banishment from Russia.

Comrade Duch unmasked 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Nic Dunlop's first-rate detective story on the trail of Pol Pot's chief executioner, the notorious Comrade Duch, is a fascinating journey into Cambodia's recent bloody history. Through a series of testimonies by Duch's family members and people who knew him, Dunlop builds up a compelling picture of this former teacher turned mass murderer, whilst also giving us a running commentary on the development of the Khmer Rouge organisation through the eyes of former cadre such as Sokheang, now a human rights investigator though formerly a Khmer Rouge sympathiser.

The Lost Executioner is Dunlop's first book; he's primarily a photographer who became obsessed with S-21, known to many as Tuol Sleng, and its commandant, Comrade Duch. He even kept a photo of Duch in his pocket. By an astonishing stroke of luck, Dunlop met the man responsible for the deaths of more than 20,000 people, in Samlaut, a small town in northwest Cambodia in 1999 and exposed him with the help of Nate Thayer and the Far Eastern Economic Review, leading to his arrest and detention, awaiting trial. Dunlop's subsequent investigations and interviews now provide us with a great wealth of detail about Duch's life before, during and after the Khmer Rouge reign of terror though ultimately the reason for Duch's transformation into a brutal killer remains an unexplained puzzle. In a perverse twist, Duch converted to Christianity, had worked for an American charity, was living under a new identity and had returned to teaching before his unmasking. The book is written in an easy to follow though powerful narrative and I recommend The Lost Executioner to anyone seeking to delve into the morass that is Cambodia's recent past. It's a remarkable and revealing story.

Editorial Review:

In Cambodia, between 1975 and 1979, nearly two million people died at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. As head of the Khmer Rouge secret police, Comrade Duch was responsible for the murder of more than 20,000 people considered enemies of the revolution. Twenty years later, not one member of the Khmer Rouge had been held accountable for what happened. Like so many others, Comrade Duch had disappeared. Over a decade of working in Cambodia, photographer Nic Dunlop became obsessed with the idea of finding Duch. As the commandant of "S-21" prison, Duch could shed light on a secret and brutal world that had been sealed off to outsiders. Then, by chance, he came face to face with him. The Lost Executioner describes a personal journey to the heart of the Khmer Rouge. It is an attempt to find out what actually happened in Pol Pot's Cambodia and why; to understand how a seemingly peaceful nation could give birth to one of the most bloodthirsty revolutions in modern history.

This Much Is True: You Have Been Lied To.

  • The government is expanding.
  • Taxes are increasing.
  • More senseless wars are being planned.
  • Inflation is ballooning.
  • Our basic freedoms are disappearing.

The Founding Fathers didn't want any of this. In fact, they said so quite clearly in the Constitution of the United States of America. Unfortunately, that beautiful, ingenious, and revolutionary document is being ignored more and more in Washington. If we are to enjoy peace, freedom, and prosperity once again, we absolutely must return to the principles upon which America was founded. But finally, there is hope . . .

In THE REVOLUTION,Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul has exposed the core truths behind everything threatening America, from the real reasons behind the collapse of the dollar and the looming financial crisis, to terrorism and the loss of our precious civil liberties. In this book, Ron Paul provides answers to questions that few even dare to ask.

Despite a media blackout, this septuagenarian physician-turned-congressman sparked a movement that has attracted a legion of young, dedicated, enthusiastic supporters . . . a phenomenon that has amazed veteran political observers and made more than one political rival envious. Candidates across America are already running as "Ron Paul Republicans."

"Dr. Paul cured my apathy," says a popular campaign sign. THE REVOLUTION may cure yours as well.

Editorial Review:

Monopolistic mega-corporations control all basic resources and items that world citizens depend on for their daily survival-not just food, resource-goods, or medicine, but also things like water, information, transportation, education, and even consciousness. Each of these corporations is controlled by tiny numbers of unelected, militaristic, fascistic labor-lords-called corporatists-who are outside of media attention and who exercise their power to such an extent that they will do anything-including obliterate and destroy the spirit and consciousness of citizens worldwide (including children). This book is an existential, empirical, economic, and psychological study of how corporations dominate the globe to the point that humanity worldwide is reduced to little more than a crushed, defeated mob of uneducated, brainwashed, and tormented beings - who are often tricked into believing they are free, as is the case with middle and upper class Americans. The corporatists secretly control the governments and major control agencies of the world: the UN, the CIA the WTO, the WHO, the FDA, medical schools and universities, the Federal Reserve, the world's militaries, farming, mass media, and religions-and that is just a partial list. Corporatism: The Secret Government of the New World Order shows that corporatism is the real underlying issue from which literally all major human problems now and in the past derive from; and the other issues that people usually imagine are the real underlying causes of humanity's problems (the politicians, war, human nature, greed, religion, problems with parenting and the education system, etc.), are just symptoms of the real problem, which is corporatism. In this book, Professor Grupp proves that the United States is a corporatist nation no different in fact from the communist horror-states described in books such as Orwell's 1984. Corporatism shows that in the near future America will be a full-fledged prison nation that will ultimately merge into the corporatist global "prison planet" that Hitler was initially attempting to set up, and which is now called the New World Order.

Nice compilation of Lenin's body of work 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Tucker's edited volume, "The Lenin Anthology," is a good compilation of Lenin's body of work. If one wishes a quick introduction to Lenin in one volume, this is a good work to look at.

First, Lenin's real name was Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov. The death of his older brother at the hands of the government was a key point in his life (note the brief chronology on pages xv-xxiii, from his birth in 1870 to his death in 1924). Tucker's introductory essay is useful for placing Lenin's work in context. He observes that (page xxvi): "Lenin must be understood both as a creator of a distinctive version of Marxism as a revolutionary theory and also as a person steeped in the native Russian, non-Marxist revolutionary tradition."

The volume's Part I focuses on "The Revolutionary Party and Its Tactics." The single most important contribution is probably "What Is to Be Done? Burning Questions of Our Movement." This work outlines his view of the tactics of revolution under the banner of the party. Other selections are also useful to understand his tactical perspective (e.g., "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back").

Part II examines "Revolutionary Politics in a World at War." One of the best known of his works in this section is "Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism," in which work he equated capitalist countries with carrying out imperialist policies. Part II considers "The Revolutionary Taking of Power." In my view, doubtless the single most important work appearing in this section is Lenin's "The State and Revolution." This work focuses more on revolution, how to achieve it, what it means, and what of the aftermath than almost any substantial work that he wrote. This is far more a kind of philosophical work than his more tactical pieces from Part I. And so on.

Other key works appearing in whole or in part: "The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky," "'Left-Wing' Communism--An Infantile Disorder," etc. At the end, there are some poignant letters and brief essays. Poignant among some of these: His frustration with bureaucracy holding back what he saw as the goals of revolution after the Bolsheviks had seized power; his fears regarding succession, as he lugubriously diagnosed that Stalin was not the person to succeed him (e.g., see page 728)--and his powerlessness to prevent what he feared; his essay "Better Fewer, But Better," in which he excoriated Stalin indirectly and argued for less obtrusive government and moving ahead more slowly and carefully. In the last named essay, he defined the title as (page 736): "We must follow the rule: Better fewer, but better. We must follow the rule: Better get good human material in two or even three years rather than work in haste without hope of getting any at all."

Lenin was a master of political invective, attacked his enemies mercilessly (even if just in his writing). He was a professional revolutionary who also was, on occasion, capable of interesting political reflections. If one wishes to know more about the works of and ideas of V. I. Lenin, this is one of the very best starting points.

Editorial Review:

Here, in a compact yet comprehensive volume, are the essentials of Lenin's writings, each of them introduced with a brief interpretive commentary. Patterned after Professor Tucker's highly successful anthology The Marx-Engels Reader, this book includes those words necessary for an introduction to Lenin's revolutionary thought. Selections, where possible, are presented in their fullest form, and 'The State and Revolution' and 'left-Wing' communism' in their entirety.
