Never have so many extrapolated so much out of so little. 4 out of 5 stars.

A concept born in a simpler time used as an excuse for many things from Socialism to controlled capitalism. As with any pivotal work one should read it for his/her self. There is always the chance of misinterpretation by an individual, but if you do not read this then you are just accepting someone's word anyway.
This is more than an economics book it is a way of life. It sounds good on paper but makes a lot of assumptions. Instead of worrying about workability, look at the logic that is built on assumptions of that time (written, in 1848). Add this to your library.

You can pick a side (pro or con) and make a stand if you like; but look at the size of this book and realize that many people will just use the title and build their own case. You will have read the real thing. And be sure to balance it with. "The Capitalist Manifesto" by Louis O. Kelso

Although this title is known as one of the most famous left-wing propagandist publications, it serves as a lesson for thos of all political philosophys. The Communist Manifesto should be required reading when studying political science, radicalism and radical political thought.

Good reporting - but too heavy on the spin 2 out of 5 stars.

It's unfortunate that more books on this topic are not written and/or widely read. Palast does a good job of trying to keep this issue in the mainstream. Unfortunately, I think he cheapens the effort by writing in a style that is overly sarcastic and glib. The whole book comes across as a left wing hatchet piece. The shortcomings of the Bush administration and Congress are plain to see for anyone who takes the time to even read a book. I think the cause would have been better served by more straightforward reporting and less commentary. Palast's disdain literally drips off the page.

There is one short passage on pg 228 about the replacement of the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, Miriam Oliphant. I live in Broward and this was a major news story for months. Palast portrays her as being replaced by a republican because of her objections to the voting systems. Nothing could be further from the truth. She was replaced because she was incompetent. She bungled elections, mismanaged her staff and budget, and was a terrible manager. The Democratic party led the effort to have her removed. Governor Bush actually refused to remove her at first. Also, her replacement was a democrat, not a republican as Palast states.

Although, I did not take the time to re-check any other facts. This one I knew to be untrue just sort of turned me off from his whole style. He is overly anxious to portray every single action and fact as contributing to his whole case. This important issue would have been better brought to light by a more serious investigative piece. For example, Thomas Ricks did not need to inject sarcasm into Fiasco to crucify Bush's handling of the Iraq war. Bottom line, this book is written with such a severe slant that the only people who will read it already agree with his conclusions. It's not likely to change any minds.

Buying this product (We the People: Shorter Sixth Edition) off of amazon was an excellent choice. Considering that the campus bookstore charged 3x more, this was an outstanding value for such an in depth look at American Government.

I love Thomas Sowell for his clear mindset and philosohy. I read almost nothing else but philosophy, and Sowell is at the top of my list for clarity, understanding and delivery. He does not receive, in my opinion, the recognition for his genius he is due. A must read.... as is all of Thomas Sowells books

If you have never read anything about peak oil or survival perhaps this book will get you thinking. If you have any knowledge of these topics you will find this book very high level and not informative. If Mr. McBay has an understanding of survival, or in a more relevant vein self-reliance, it does not make it to these pages.

Two quick examples: The book is a very light at under 100 pages and he spends 33 of those pages talking about cooling and cooking food. In his post crash world there is a big issue with cooling or cooking food but apparently after grid crash there is no problem actually getting the food. If there is, he does not address the issue. Personally I have become accustomed to eating.

Second, he spends less than 2 pages addressing heat (in the winter). If you live in the North one would hope Mr. McBay would address the topic as a lack of fuel would definitely have an effect. His suggestions are pitiful. Light a fire (great if you live on the third floor of an apartment with no fireplace) and put on more clothes. Brilliant! I need someone to remind me to get dressed. How about a simple suggestion to prepare yourself by getting a high quality sleeping bag that can keep you alive when the temperature goes sub zero. No such common sense suggestions are to be found.

If you want a book on survival then buy one on that specific topic. May I suggest "SAS Survival Handbook". If you want a book on Self-Reliance then buy one on that specific topic. I would suggest starting with "Storey's Basic Country Skills" or "The Self-sufficient Life and How to live It" or "The Big Book of Self-Reliant Living". All these books are tomes of knowledge that may actually help you if hard times come to pass.
