Editorial Review:

In many countries the terrorism and political violence of the late 1980s and early 1990s has increasingly been attributed to the extreme right. In this first general and comparative volume to focus on right-wing terrorism, case studies explore militant groups in North America, South Africa, Japan, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia. Together they make up a book which provides new insight into the radicalization processes that produce right-wing extremist violence. Equally important is the emphasis on factors and circumstances which might serve to restrain militant groups from following their extremist ideas to their ultimate violent conclusions.

Is author Cheri Seymour "Inside the Radical Right"? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent, self-published, hard-copy book if the reader/researcher can ignore the constant references to "the author this" and "the author that" and the unfortunate lack of an index. Books such as this publication. and similar books such as Barbara Honneger's "October Suprise", are created in an era of easy high-technology that should obligate the authors to respect their work's place in history. It should be incumbant upon the writers to include a detailed index. When a book is well written and fills a gap in the history of a political movement that is essential to a future generation's understanding of their time, it is the author's absolute resonsibility to include an index that enables the reader to document by author, subject, and event the book's place in history.

Why has author Cheri Seymour now changed her name and is publishing her works free on the internet. That type of conduct makes a reader question whether she also is "inside the far right".

Editorial Review:

This book starts in the 1960's and goes through the historic court case called "COMMITTEE OF THE STATES", 1986-1988. A Committee of the States is provided for in the Articles of Confederation. When the government found out a Committee of the States was being formed, it came down on them with all four feet. There is no way our government wants its citizens to watch them - up close. The trial chapter is a history of how far the present entrenched government will go to protect it's position.

Jean-Paul Sartre originally made the term engagement a part of the existentialist vocabulary following WWII. It imples the responsibility of intervening in social or political conflicts in the hope of fostering freedom. Imagining the Possible opens different windows upon this particular engagement.

Editorial Review:

Why did so many founders and supporters of the sixties' New Left movement become so disillusioned and drift to the political center and right? When did their "second thoughts" crystallize, and how did they extricate themselves from their radical ties?

For answers, best-selling authors Peter Collier and David Horowitz gathered together more than 20 of these so-called "second thoughters" for a conference where they came out of the political closet and looked back at the dream that died.

Second Thoughts is a riveting account of the conference in which participants discuss their long and winding political journeys. Black activist Julius Lester describes his moment of truth during a Black Panther trial; author and film critic Michael Medved reports on the radical chic in Hollywood that makes "airhead activists" out of brat pack stars and starlets; Robert Leiken tells of the McCarthyite attacks he suffered at the hands of the left as a reprisal for his criticisms of the Sandinistas; and on the lighter side, former National Lampoon editor P.J. O'Rourke divulges that his second thoughts began when a leftist gang stole his girlfriend.

Among the other contributors are Joshua Muravchik, Richard Neuhaus, Arturo Cruz, Jr., Jeffrey Heft, K. L. Billingsley, Doan Van Toai, and Barry Rubin. The perspectives of an earlier generation of "second thoughters, " such as Martin Peretz, Norman Podhoretz, Hilton Kramer and Irving Kristol are also included.

This provocative book gives rare insight into the intersection between the personal and the political. It captures a unique moment when members of a radical generation talk about finally coming home again.

Editorial Review:

From her perspective as both participant and observer, Barbara Epstein examines the nonviolent direct action movement which, inspired by the civil rights movement, flourished in the United States from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties. Disenchanted with the politics of both the mainstream and the organized left, and deeply committed to forging communities based on shared values, activists in this movement developed a fresh, philosophy and style of politics that shaped the thinking of a new generation of activists. Driven by a vision of an ecologically balanced, nonviolent, egalitarian society, they engaged in political action through affinity groups, made decisions by consensus, and practiced mass civil disobedience.
The nonviolent direct action movement galvanized originally in opposition to nuclear power, with the Clamshell Alliance in New England and then the Abalone Alliance in California leading the way. Its influence soon spread to other activist movements--for peace, non-intervention, ecological preservation, feminism, and gay and lesbian rights.
Epstein joined the San Francisco Bay Area's Livermore Action Group to protest the arms race and found herself in jail along with a thousand other activists for blocking the road in front of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. She argues that to gain a real understanding of the direct action movement it is necessary to view it from the inside. For with its aim to base society as a whole on principles of egalitarianism and nonviolence, the movement sought to turn political protest into cultural revolution.

Pretty superficial examination of far right movement 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Coppola seems significantly more concerned with promoting his own "bravado" for simply talking with those in the far right movement. He provides no insight into how and why the movement survives.Basically a superficial and self-promoting book of little consequence. Don't waste your time and money.

A poorely documented mass of speculation and misinformation 5 out of 5 stars.

This book doesn't grasp many of the issues that have driven many Americans into periferal groups in order to magnify their voice in the system. The book also fails to outline the fundamental causes which alienate many Americans from the mainstream method of political discourse. In order to understand the Militia phenomenon, one must assume that their is a current threat to the survival of our personal freedoms eminating from the government that is supposed to protect our civil rights.

Editorial Review:

Vincent Coppola traces today's radical militia movement to its source: virulent right-wing extremism that emerged in the mid-'80s, most dramatically with the murder of talk radio's Alan Berg and a string of other spectacular crimes by neo-Nazis--the story that became Oliver Stone's Talk Radio. Dragons of God takes us into a forbidding country, but one we can no longer ignore.

Editorial Review:

This book charts the course of working- and middle-class radical politics in England from the continental revolutions of 1848 to the fall of Gladstone's Liberal government in 1874. The author traces the genealogy of English radicalism from its roots in Protestant Dissent and the seventeenth-century revolutions, but also shows how this shared radical tradition was problematized by middle-class radicals' acceptance of classical liberal economics. She traces the lineaments of this divide by contrasting middle- and working-class responses to the continental revolutions of 1848-9, to the Polish and Italian nationalism of the 1860s, and to the Paris Commune in 1871. She argues that these years witnessed not the relentless liberalization of working-class radical protest in England, but rather a significant diminution of middle-class radicals' commitment to liberal economics. This accommodation contributed to the emergence of the 'New Liberalism' of the 1880s, and helped to shape middle- and working-class responses to the early socialist movement.

Editorial Review:

Huey P. Newton's powerful legacy to the Black Panther Movement and the civil rights struggle has long been obscured. Conservatives harp at Newton's drug use and at the circumstances of his death in a crack-related shooting. Liberals romanticize his black revolutionary rhetoric and idealize his message.

In Huey P. Newton: The Radical Theorist, Judson L. Jeffries considers the entire arc of Newton's political role and influence on civil rights history and African American thought. Jeffries argues that, contrary to popular belief, Newton was one of the most important political thinkers in the struggle for civil rights.

Stripped of history and interpretation, the violence of Newton's life brought emphatic indictments of him. Newton's death attracted widespread media attention. However, pundits offered little on Newton as freedom fighter or as theoretician and activist.

Huey P. Newton: The Radical Theorist dispels myths about Newton's life, but the book is primarily an in-depth examination of Newton's ideas. By exploring this charismatic leader, Jeffries' book makes a valuable contribution to the scant literature on Newton, while also exposing the core tenets and evolving philosophies of the Black Panther Party.

Editorial Review:

This is an entirely new edition of the author’s 1984 study (originally published by South End Press) of radical media and movements. The first and second sections are original to this new edition. The first section explores social and cultural theory in order to argue that radical media should be a central part of our understanding of media in history. The second section weaves an historical and international tapestry of radical media to illustrate their centrality and diversity, from dance and graffiti to video and the internet and from satirical prints and street theatre to culture-jamming, subversive song, performance art and underground radio. The section also includes consideration of ultra-rightist media as a key contrast case. The book’s third section provides detailed case studies of the anti-fascist media explosion of 1974-75 in Portugal, Italy’s long-running radical media, radio and access video in the USA, and illegal media in the dissolution of the former Soviet bloc dictatorships.
