Editorial Review:

Far more than a simple glossary, this unique resource provides a detailed lexicography of political and social life in China today, and deepens our understanding of the last twenty years of enormous change in the People's Republic. Each of the 1,600 entries (1) is rendered in Chinese characters; (2) is alphabetized according to pinyin, the Chinese phonetic alphabet; (3) is translated into English; and (4) is explained in terms of the situation in which it first appeared and how its meaning shifted over time. In addition to the main body of definitions and annotations, there are three appendices, abbreviations, a name index, and a bibliography.

Editorial Review:

Dramatic developments in the international communist world over the last decade make a re-evaluation of Mao's thought from a critical left perspective an urgent task. "Critical Perspectives on Mao Zedong's Thought" addresses this task, challenging the dominance of conservative perspectives in China studies while presenting alternative constructions which draw on concepts and modes of discourse characteristic of left scholarship. Here, distinguished contributors from a variety of disciplines offer a critical re-evaluation of Mao Zedong's thought in light of post-Mao developments in Marxism in general, and Chinese Marxism in particular. Conceptually, the essays share common ground in viewing Mao's Marxism as a third world revolutionary Marxism, and fall broadly into two areas: the relationship of Mao Zedong's thought to the Marxist tradition, and the place of Mao Zedong's thought within a Third World revolutionary discourse. At its broadest, the goal of this volume is to examine the relationship between Marxism as a product of the European historical experience, and its unfolding globally with the globalisation of capitalism. The book, which has no parallel in either the themes addressed or the range of specialists it draws upon, should be of interest to students of China, of Marxism, and of Third World revolutionary movements. Given China's rapid economic development and its emergence as the central figure on the world's economic stage, this book will also be of interest to the educated layperson.

Editorial Review:

Founded in the remote mountains of ChinaOs Jiangxi Province in 1958, the Communist Labor University introduced uneducated laborers to basic agricultural science and farming techniques through an innovative work-study program until 1980. Drawing on a wealth of archival materials, John Cleverley explores the inner workings of this unique institution and the personal involvement of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Deng Xiaoping. Illuminating the internal and external politics of a remarkable social experiment from both an institutional and personal perspective, the book underscores the larger issues of educational reform and political change in China.
