Insightful, disturbing, informed and depressing. 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book links the Holocaust, the Challenger disaster and contemporary issues of public administation, questioning the methods and motivations. It ties in a wide variety of disciplines to give a full and well argued perspective. It brings home the horrors of 1940s Germany to America today. It pleads with the reader to develop an historical conscience. If you work in public administration you should read it. The book has relevance for everyone, but limits itself to the public sector, due to its links with the series on advances in public administration. An uncomfortable, but important book to read.

Editorial Review:

In Unmasking Administrative Evil, the authors argue that the tendency toward administrative evil, as manifested in acts of dehumanization and genocide, is deeply woven into the identity of public administration. The common characteristic of administrative evil is that ordinary people within their normal professional roles can engage in acts of evil without being aware that they are doing anything wrong. Under conditions of moral inversion, people may even view their evil activity as good. In an age when "bureaucratic bashing" is fashionable, this book seeks to lay the groundwork for a more ethical and democratic public life, one that recognizes its potential for evil and thereby creates greater possibilities for avoiding the hidden pathways that lead to state-sponsored dehumanization and destruction.

Editorial Review:

A fundamental, but mostly hidden, transformation is happening in the way public services are being delivered, and in the way local and national governments fulfill their policy goals. Government executives are redefining their core responsibilities away from managing workers and providing services directly to orchestrating networks of public, private, and nonprofit organizations to deliver the services that government once did itself. Authors Stephen Goldsmith and William D. Eggers call this new model governing by network and maintain that the new approach is a dramatically different type of endeavor that simply managing divisions of employees. Like any changes of such magnitude, it poses major challenges for those in charge. Faced by a web of relationships and partnerships that increasingly make up modern governance, public managers must grapple with skill-set issues (managing a contract to capture value); technology issues (incompatible information systems); communications issues (one partner in the network, for example, might possess more information than another); and cultural issues (how interplay among varied public, private, and nonprofit sector cultures can create unproductive dissonance). Governing by Network examines for the first time how managers on both sides of the aisle, public and private, are coping with the changes. Drawing from dozens of case studies, as well as established best practices, the authors tell us what works and what doesnt. Here is a clear roadmap for actually governing the networked state for elected officials, business executives, and the broader public.

Back and Improved...At Last! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The year before George W. Bush took office as president I attended a professional conference where a graduate student offered a paper that posed the question whether Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.'s "Imperial Presidency" was still valid. Quite a debate ensued. Today, in the wake of the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war, and its application in Iraq, I am compelled to offer that this revised volume, with new introduction, answers the previous question with a resounding yea. This has been a very important volume in the study of the presidency, especially regarding the constitution, foreign policy, and war. In the shadow of the Iraqi affair, I would go one step further and say it is a vital work in these troubled times. No, the era of the Imperial Presidency never really went away; and yes, it is a vital concern for the future of the republic and global stability. Schlesinger has recognized this and once again warns us of pending dangers.

Editorial Review:

This Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and bestselling author questions the growth of presidential power in two centuries, from George Washington to Ronald Reagan. One of the most important and influential examinations of the U.S. presidency.

The Effective Public Manager 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a helpful text in understanding some of the roles and dynamics for a Public Administrator--not for profit and public organizations and governmental departments. It is an easy read. And while it is a basic level text, it does a nice job of tackling some of the complicated issues for Public Administration. The focus is on building infrastructure; staff and program implementation; budget and finances; and public relations issues. A thorough accounting for the general needs in the field of Public Management.

Editorial Review:

Since it was first published more than twenty years ago, The Effective Public Manager has become the classic resource for public administrators and students. The fourth edition of groundbreaking work synthesizes the current thinking in the field and presents practical lessons and tools in a highly accessible format. Focused on helping real-world managers and managers-to-be meet the demands of their jobs head-on rather than working around the constraints of government, this book offers a fresh approach to implementing effective management tools in a dynamic political, organizational, economic, and technological context.

Editorial Review:

Drawing together a distinguished cast of international contributors, this new edition offers a timely collection of essays that analyze key issues, institutions, laws, and policies for the protection of the global environment. In addition to crucial historical context on the development of global environmental organizations and treaties, chapter authors offer both engaging discussions of current and critical global environmental agreements and insight into national and international implementation of sustainable development principles. Returning contributors have thoroughly revised and updated their chapters, while six brand new chapters examine such important topics as regime theory, climate change, hazardous chemical controls, perspectives of the developing world, and the European Union's and United States' international environmental policies. A useful chronology of global environmental policy and a list of acronyms further aid students in critical reading, as well as review and study.

Bush and Cheney Get Exposed 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is a well researched and documented examination of the excesses of the Bush/Cheney presidency and how this came to be. In the book, Dean looks at the issues of secrecy within the White House, lying and dirty tricks. And, if there is anyone, anywhere who knows more about this subject I would love to see who they are.

Dean does a wonderful job of comparing and contrasting the current regime with the Nixon presidency and writes in a clear, concise and easy to read manner. I look forward to reading his other 2 books, as to learn more about what has gone wrong with the current Republican Party.

This is a must read for any American who wants to see this country remain free!

Worse than Watergate - you can say that again 4 out of 5 stars.

I've read most of John Dean's books and enjoy them. This was a good book, very interesting and informative about the evil tenure of Bush/Cheney. I'm sure it's dead on with what went on behind the scenes and how we got into the sorry mess of a country that we are today largely due to these 2 idiots.

An Exhaustive Collection of Public Personnel Issues 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I recently read this book for a Ph.D. course, I found it to be quite exhaustive in coverage. From the beginnings of the public sector and the issues of spoils and patronage to the current issues of pay for performance, sexual harrassment and current public work trends, this book covers a great deal of subjects. Perhaps the most notable is the writers' ability to combine historical personnel issues with relative theories to argue current problems and situations. The second full reading really helped to clarify the book's thoughtful issues.

Editorial Review:

Prepare for your career in public personnel management with THE NEW PUBLIC PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION! With coverage of public policies, law rulings, and court rulings, this text gives you a solid foundation for advanced studies in specialized areas of public personnel management. Major policy trends and debates are discussed including affirmative action, compensation and benefits, sexual harassment, workplace violence, substance and alcohol abuse, performance appraisal, and collective bargaining. Discussion questions, suggested readings, chapter appendices, informative illustrations, and examples are just a few of the tools that will help you succeed in this course.
