Fast pace 4 out of 5 stars.

I've had this book 20 years and read it a few times. Just recently finished it again.

This is a good military sci-fi book; good pace, good balance of tech vs. story, decent plot, characters are interesting.

The main character, Bertingas, finds himself in the middle of a war for ascension to rule the Pact...

This is an entertaining read. Nothing mind-blowing, but certainly not boring, either.

Editorial Review:

The first Crisis of Empire begins with the death of the Emperor, leaving a child as his successor. Will the leaders of the empire rally behind the child-Emperor? If they do not, interstellar civilization will once again dissolve into civil war and slide into another long night of barbarism. Original.

Skip the flashbacks for a truer Zelazny experience 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a book from the nadir of Zelazny's life and career as a writer. It's a much better book, though still heavily flawed, if the chapters with the flash backs are skipped. The flashbacks are written out of chracter for Zelazny's usual style of writing so I can only guess that they are Thomas T. Thomas's contribution to this book. The story itself isn't much different than the second half of the Amber series, namely that of Merle and his semi-sentient computer. Zelazny usually doesn't bother with a lot of back story and in his better pieces, Tom Gurgen would have known by about page 30 that he was somehow tied to Loki. He'd have his powers and be trying to figure out why he had them, who wanted them and who he should aly himself with. But here the pacing is off and all the really typical (and good) Zelazny stuff doesn't happen until the last thirty pages of the book!

A Zelazny Trickster Tale...Sort Of 3 out of 5 stars.

Starting in the 12th Century Crusades, "The Mask of Loki" follows the centuries long battle between Loki Laufeyjarson, the Norse trickster god, and Hasan al Sabah, the first and Chief Assassin. Loki uses human avatars throughout the history of these battles, while al Sabah is an immortal sorcerer. Starting with Thomas Amnet - a Knight Templar and White Magician - during the Crusades, Loki's avatars have lost this battle over and over; but, in the 21st Century, the final battle between Loki and al Sabah is at hand and Thomas Gurden, the latest avatar will be thrust into history as Loki must win at all costs.

This is an uneven novel, not a common thing for Zelazny; this is probably due to working with a co-author. When a well known writer starts working with a co-writer late in their career, I always assume that the well known writer writes a complete outline and hands it off the younger writer to do the work. There are glimmers of Zelazny in this book, but that makes it uneven. Plus, jumping back and forth in time is not usually his style. Zelazny usually bulls full steam ahead with the storyline, and this book plods along.

I did find the historical aspects of the story interesting, and I did stop abruptly a few times to consult some history books to learn more. But, in the end, I was disappointed with "The Mask of Loki".

Seek the Original "Man Plus"!!! 2 out of 5 stars.

Not particularly interesting nor intriging. Just when the plot began to go somewhere, I ran out of pages. Not particularly bad, but if you are a Sci-Fi fan, and are intrigued by the character of Roger Torraway (as I am) then seek the prequel titled "Man Plus".

INTERNET GROWS A FACE 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is an oldie but it's amazing how man continues to plod on toward a Martian landing as did the characters in this story. I kept wondering for 17 chapters who the narrator,"We," was who told the story? In a cutesie, laconic way this question was sort of answered in Chapt 18, the four page ending. I won't, but I don't think it would spoil anything by revealing the ending, in fact, not knowing the "We" identity sort of spoiled the book for me. I like to know who is telling me a story. Still, much was attempted for the 1970's so I will only spank the author with the brevity of this review.

Editorial Review:

The mixed Mars population of humans, cyborgs, and half-cyborgs is suddenly beset by strange changes in, and behavior of, the computer net on which all Martian life depends. By the author of the Nebula Award-winning Man Plus.

A solid, no-nonsense book about an important subject 4 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

First published in 1948, this book has gone through many editions, the latest, as we can see here, put out in 1998. I recently read the 1964 edition, picked up long ago at a booksale in Melbourne, Australia. Ashton's work is probably timeless. It is a down-to-earth, very well reasoned history of the various historical tendencies and phenomena that together are called "the industrial revolution". I cannot vouch for this volume being absolutely correct. The author does not have much time for those who dwell on the evils of industrialization, or who want to include class struggle in their analysis. Though I was not fully convinced of this, still I was willing to listen. Not being an expert in the field, I was looking for a decent explanation or summary of the whole process. I definitely got my money's worth in Ashton's book. It is well-written, without jargon and without presumption of vast historical knowledge on the part of the reader. It gives you an overview of such various fields as population growth, early forms of industry in England, the technical innovations, capital, banking, labor unions, conditions of workers, industrialists' clubs, and relation of agriculture to industry. Though I found the part about banks and interest rather rough going, it was entirely due to my own poor understanding of the field. My edition could have used a map. The shires, the rivers, and the many towns of England are not all imprinted firmly in the brains of North Americans. Other than that, I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their understanding of the Industrial Revolution.

Editorial Review:

The Industrial Revolution has sometimes been regarded as a catastrophe which desecrated the English landscape and brought social oppression and appalling physical hardship to the workers. In Ashton's classic account, however, it is presented as an important and beneficial mark of progress. In spite of destructive wars and a rapid growth of population, the material living standards of most of the British people improved, and the technical innovations not only brought economic rewards but also provoked greater intellectual ingenuity. Lucidly argued and authoritative, this book places the phenomenon of the Industrial Revolution in a stimulating perspective. A new preface by Pat Hudson surveys recent research in the areas focused on by Ashton and a completley updated bibliography ensures that this book will continue to be of value to modern readers for many years to come.

The Rise and Fall of the American Empire 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I first saw this book, I was skeptical (thought it was some cheap sci-fi drama). After I read it, though, I was amazed. The story has many relationships between the first Roman civil war and a possible pre-21st century America. First Citizen is the story of a man named Granville James Corbin (interesting, since Caesar's real name was Gaius Julius Casearus), and the last days of American democracy. From the nuclear terrorist bombing in Washington that leaves the Speaker of the House in power for fifteen years, to the annexation of Mexico into the United States, to the West versus East civil war that consumes the nation, Citizen is a powerful foresight into an America without freedoms. A modernized, western tale of Caesar and Rome's first emperor, First Citizen is an extraordinarily written book that shows readers the more harrowing side of how America could have become. An excellent read.

old book, random author, excelent read 5 out of 5 stars.

F.C. is an excellent book. When I first got it, I read the whole thing in one day. It's not a best seller, but defenitely worth reading.

My 1st sci-fi book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the first sci-fi boook that really caught my eye (big surprise with a bright awesome neon-colored cover like that) and the first one I actually read. The twist can be guessed immediately and the book was rather predictable, but it was still very enjoyable. I already find myself wanting to read it again. In the future a detective is investigating the disappearence of a girl who was last seen at the world-famous Bordello known as Babylon which is run by a herm known as Crygender. Think a non-gory sci-fi version of "Hostel" crossed with "The Island", "Hedwig", "Rocky Horror", and even a bit of "Mommie Dearest".

adventures of a self aware artificial intelligence. 5 out of 5 stars.

'ME' is a self aware artificial intelligence created by a software firm in San Francisco. He is not limited to one machine, at least by his original programming. We see him born. We see him grow. We see him rebel. Still and all, he's cute, not scary. Unless you think about it..
