Helpful tool for electrical machine problems 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found that this book is a very useful source for solving problems related to elctrical machines. It provides clear and easy to follow instructions that are well laid out and easy to follow. It offers a varying level of problems ranging from the fundamentals through to the more complex machine problems. This is a useful aid or reference for anyone looking for a book to help them in their studies and wants to have more practice at solving problems relating to this subject.

Weak on PM Machines 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Good book overall, but is getting dated. Most of the problems seem to be done in Gauss and Oersteds, and I don't believe there were any problems which used Neodemium magnets, which are most common in newer, high efficiency motors.

There was also very little on Permanent Magnet machines, about 6 pages, much of which was diagrams or descriptions of magnet types. Am still looking for a good book with problems on Permanent Magnet motors and generators.

Am using Hendershot and Miller's Design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors, which is very good. But it does not have many problems in it.

Editorial Review:

More than 50,000 copies of this powerful study guide sold in the first edition! Covering a broad range of topics, from simple DC magnetic circuits to electronic control of DC and AC motors, all the concepts and their applications are clearly explained and illustrated. Includes hundreds of problems with detailed solutions to help students learn quickly and reaise test scores without investing unnecessary time. Ideal for undergraduate students of electrical engineering, for solo study, and as a refresher.

Amateurish and poorly researched. 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I'll put it simply: this is a poor history of the compass. For almost ten years, publishers have been throwing money at anyone who might attempt to repeat the success of Dava Sobel's 'Longitude', and here we see the worst outcome of that lust for success. This book is worthless.

Editorial Review:

The story of the compass is shrouded in mystery and myth, yet most will agree it begins around the time of the birth of Christ in ancient China. A mysterious lodestone whose powers affected metal was known to the Chinese emperor. When this piece of metal was suspended in water, it always pointed north. This unexplainable occurrence led to the stone's use in feng shui, the Chinese art of finding the right location. However, it was the Italians, more than a thousand years later, who discovered the ultimate destiny of the lodestone and unleashed its formidable powers. In Amalfi sometime in the twelfth century, the compass was born, crowning the Italians as the new rulers of the seas and heralding the onset of the modern world. Retracing the roots of the compass and sharing the fascinating story of navigation through the ages, The Riddle of the Compass is Aczel at his most entertaining and insightful.

Editorial Review:

Like its well-known predecessor, this new and expanded Ninth Edition presents numerous important changes, beginning with the title and continuing throughout the text. Drawing on current knowledge and his own extensive experience, Dr. Selman provides a thorough revision and overview of each previously included chapter. Definitions, foundations, and principles are presented along with changes in methods and procedures. The text presents five new chapters on computed tomography, radioactivity and diagnostic nuclear medicine, radiobiology, protection in radiology/health physics, and nonradiologic imaging. In addition, basic computer science, mammography, digital imaging, and the basic science of radiobiology are thoroughly discussed. This text continues to reflect the actual needs of students with more questions, problems, and sample solutions which are included at the end of every chapter. The index is user friendly to facilitate the search for answers. Concepts have! been refined, with old figures revised and new figures added where applicable. To improve readability, a double-column format has been adapted, bringing the illustrations closer to their explanation within the text. Each chapter begins with an outline of the contents guiding the student through the essential elements. This text continues to fulfill the existing need within the field for an up-to-date, precise, and comprehensive book detailing the development of skills necessary for professional work.

Adequate for short undergraduate course 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used this book to instruct a 16-week junior/senior level course in Electromagnetics for Electrical Engineers. The book starts with the fundamentals of electric charge, potential, current, and Coulomb's law. The middle portion of the book is devoted to Maxwell's equations and magnetic fields. The final chapters feature antennas and wave propagation.

Strong Points: Undergraduate students will benefit from the large number of solved examples throughout the text. Answers are provided for even-numbered end-of-chapter problems. The companion CD contains further exercises and problem solutions. The layout of the book and text type make for easy reading. All important formulas and equations are clearly labeled.

To summarize: the book tends towards the "cookbook" variety and contains enough material for a short course without going into more depth such as J. Kraus's book on Electromagnetics.

Editorial Review:

For courses in Electromagnetics offered in Electrical Engineering departments and Applied Physics. Designed specifically for a one-semester EM course covering both statics and dynamics, the book uses a number of tools to facilitate understanding of EM concepts and to demonstrate their relevance to modern technology. "Technology Briefs" provide overviews of both fundamental and sophisticated technologies, including the basic operation of an electromagnet in magnetic recording, the invention of the laser, and how EM laws underlie the operation of many types of sensors, bar code readers,GPS,communication satellites, and X-Ray tomography, among others.A CD-ROM packed with video presentations and solved problems accompanies the text.

A classic that still is worth reading 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Whenever I teach a course which touches on electric or magnetic phenomena I find myself going through this book. It works well with the early chapters of Jackson, in particular, and Smythe. Maxwell knew the subject thoroughly, up to the 1870s (and much of this material has since dropped out of courses and almost out of memory), his thinking was both profound and clear, and he may well be the best writer on physics in the English language. His proofs are economical and elegant. Oh yes - this book is still a good reference for the treatment of spherical harmonics and multipole expansions in Cartesian coordinates.

Editorial Review:

Described by Einstein as "the most important event in physics since Newton's time," the discovery by James Clerk Maxwell that a vast array of phenomena could be united by four elegant formulas remains one of the greatest successes of modern physics. Originally published in 1891, this renowned treatise presents the original work which forms the basis for everything from computers to quantum mechanics. Volume I covers electrostatics and electrokinematics.

Electricity & Magnetism defined mathematically 5 out of 5 stars.

The book in my opinion coming from a calculus III student is very rigorous and one needs to have a firm foundation on Mathematics I would say about calc III or better to even try to read this book. So far I have just started but every page is exciting because he goes into a deep explanation of what is happening and going on physically and mathematically. Not to mentioned his work is very organized.

Editorial Review:

Understanding Tesla's Theories 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If all you want to do is "make a Tesla coil and watch the pretty sparks" then I agree this book may be over your head, and yes to truly understand all that is in this book you will need a good electronics background. Having said that then the only other thing that can be said about this book is that it is without question the most comprehensive treatise ever written thus far regarding the theories and disciplines of Nikola Tesla. The electrical principles that Tesla was working on are still to this day not totally understood. From all that is in this book, it may be that the author, Mr. Tilbury, understands and knows more about Tesla's theories than anyone else there is. If you too would like to truly understand Tesla's theories, then this book is for you. This book would also be very useful as a supplement to electrical engineering courses in helping the student understand practical applications and how to perform SPICE analysis, one of the staples of everyday electrical engineering.

Seeing God (not the author, the creator of the world) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

You will finally understand what light is - 10 years after you take the course.

Yes, 2 years after you take the course, you get to arrange waves that can go easily back and forth from wave equations(insane vector calculus) to circuit equations(simple V=IR).

Yes, combined with clever Fourier math, you get to calculate impedance as vector reflection waves, so that you see (through Smith-Chart night vision like mental glasses) the waves invisible to human eyes (but visible to some animals) and make them oscillate/up-down-mix as an EE engineer making a living.

But James Maxwell's math is the only thing interesting in the world, which the book says that well. God made the waves and nothing more. If you want to make stories out of the context or take words out of the context (many books try and do), you give yourself trouble. Yes, we give ourselves troubles all our life. And you will see that in this book. This is life.

Everyone in this world needs to understand how a wave of light is made.
